An ex-college basketball player testifies that Sean ‘Diddy' Combs got ‘extremely creative' on drugs

NEW YORK — A former Syracuse University basketball player who worked recently for Sean 'Diddy' Combs as a personal assistant testified at the music mogul's sex trafficking trial on Friday that Combs got 'extremely creative' when he was on drugs.
Brendan Paul, 26, was arrested last year at a Miami airport with cocaine he says belonged to Combs, and he testified with immunity about what it was like working for the hip-hop entrepreneur for a year and a half. Paul was arrested in March 2024 — the same day federal agents conducted multiple searches related to the Combs' investigation.
Prosecutors are winding down their case after six weeks of testimony from an array of witnesses ranging from ex-girlfriends and former employees to male sex workers and the rapper Kid Cudi. Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, even made a surprise appearance at the courthouse.
The prosecution seeks to convince the jury that Combs oversaw a sprawling racketeering enterprise for two decades that relied on obedience by employees willing to do anything for him, including buying drugs when necessary.
Defence lawyers say Combs did not commit federal crimes, although they acknowledge that prosecutors have exposed domestic violence during the trial. After pleading not guilty following his September arrest at a Manhattan hotel, Combs has been held without bail at a federal lockup in Brooklyn.
Prosecutors were expected to rest their case by Monday. A defence presentation is expected to last from two to five days.
Paul said he bought drugs for Combs between five and 10 times, spending up to $500 for drugs including cocaine, ketamine, ecstasy and marijuana.
He said he only did drugs with Combs once, when Combs asked him to try 'tusi,' also known as pink cocaine, to see if it was good.
Paul said he did so because he 'wanted to prove my loyalty' and said he thought it was good.
'We continued on with our night,' he told Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavic.
Paul said that prior to his arrest, he had forgotten about the cocaine after collecting it while 'sweeping' Combs' room that morning and had accidentally left it in a bag he carried as he prepared to go on vacation with Combs and other aides. The charges were dismissed after Paul completed a pretrial diversion program.
Under questioning by defence attorney Brian Steel, Paul said his 'heart dropped' when he realized that there was cocaine in a travel bag after telling officers at the airport that everything in the bag belonged to him.
Steel asked Paul if Combs was generally happy and didn't hurt anyone when he was on drugs.
'He got extremely creative,' Paul responded.
At another point, Steel asked the witness: 'You would not work for a criminal, would you?'
'Absolutely not,' Paul responded.
Slavic, though, elicited Paul's mixed feelings about Combs when the prosecutor asked him just before he finished his testimony: 'Sitting here today, how do you feel about Mr. Combs?'
'It's complicated,' he answered.
Paul, originally from Cleveland, was a 6-foot-2 guard who walked on at Syracuse University and came off the bench in 16 games over two seasons, playing a total of 17 minutes and scored just 3 points. He later transferred to lower-tier Fairmont State University in West Virginia, where he played for two more seasons.

Seven men charged over largest jewellery heist in U.S. history
Police in California have made several arrests and laid charges in what they are calling the largest jewellery heist in U.S. history. The 2022 crime is said to have resulted in the theft of more than US$100 million worth of gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury watches. Article content According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, on the evening of July 10, 2022, two men scouted a Brinks truck leaving an international jewellery show in San Mateo, Calif., with 73 bags containing millions of dollars of jewellery. Overnight, six men and other conspirators followed the truck approximately 480 kilometres from the show to rest stops in Buttonwillow and Lebec, north of Los Angeles. Article content At the second stop, defendants stole 24 bags from the truck containing about US$100 million in jewellery. In the following days, they all deactivated their cellphone numbers that they had been using during the heist. Article content Article content Several of the men are also alleged to have stolen US$240,573 worth of Samsung electronics from an interstate cargo shipment in Ontario, Calif., four months earlier. Those same defendants then allegedly robbed a box truck driver of US$57,377 worth of Apple AirTags, with one of the robbers brandishing a knife to threaten the driver. Crown ordered to pay accused sex offender's $190 taxi fare due to N.S. courthouse closure
A Nova Scotia judge is ordering the provincial Crown to cover a $190 round-trip taxi fare for an accused sex offender whose hometown courthouse in Windsor, N.S., is being closed, forcing his trial to be heard at a justice centre a 40-kilometre drive away. The Department of Justice announced last month it will be closing the Hants County courthouse at the beginning of July, a facility with a number of problems including issues with the cells and no elevator to the second-floor courtroom, a barrier for people who can't climb stairs. But in a ruling Friday, Judge Angela Caseley noted there is no public transit from Windsor to the justice centre in Kentville, and that Jeffrey Mitchell Wile, 35, doesn't have the money to get there, or friends or family who can drive him. It means that Wile, who has pleaded not guilty to sexual interference and is on social assistance, will not be able to make it to Kentville to attend his September trial. The defence argued that if he misses that date, the judge said, he will likely be arrested on a warrant. Even if he's released, he will miss future court dates, face arrest again and could be held in custody pending trial. Moving the trial to Kentville, Caseley said, is "solely and directly" the result of the government's decision to close the Windsor courthouse. If Wile is eventually acquitted, she said the defence argued "he will effectively spend time incarcerated simply because he's poor." Wile is represented by legal aid lawyer Jonathan Hughes. Caseley said that for 251 years, people living in Hants County — where Windsor is located and which now has a population of 45,000 people — have been able to access justice "in their community." She remarked on Nova Scotia's "esteemed history" contributing to three pillars of Canada's democracy, including the country's first independent court, representative government, and freedom of the press. Prosecutor Nathan MacLean opposed the defence application for taxi fare on legal grounds, but agreed to the facts surrounding Wile's difficulty getting to Kentville for court. Current courthouse 75 years old The province operates 23 courthouses across Nova Scotia. Nine of them, including in Windsor, are "satellite" courts that only run part time and rely on employees from the larger courthouse in their area. The current Windsor courthouse is in the Hants County Court House building, which was opened in 1950 and is owned by the Municipality of West Hants. The Windsor site often hosts provincial court three days a week. The Nova Scotia Supreme Court also schedules sittings at the courthouse. Department of Justice spokesperson Lynette Macleod said in an email that officials would be reviewing the judge's decision. The email said the Kentville Justice Centre serves both Kings and Hants counties, and is fully accessible, modern and "helping improve access to justice for Nova Scotians in the Valley area." It was necessary to close the Windsor courthouse due to the overall condition of the building, the email said. In particular, the holding cells that housed people in custody who were appearing in court were inspected in January and it was decided they must be closed. There are no plans to open a new courthouse in Windsor.
