‘Start the day with a treat': an ode to hotel breakfasts
A good, diverse breakfast buffet is one of the few meals that can please any taste bud, from the fussiest eater to the greedy lover of food in all its forms. If you can't find something you want to eat at a hotel breakfast, then the fault probably lies with you.
But while an abundant breakfast buffet is a thing of beauty, the ideal scenario is a combination of DIY stations and an à la carte menu. And that's the case at Conrad Dublin. At the buffet, symmetrical displays of mini chia pudding pots are lined up over fanned slices of cantaloupe, pineapple and watermelon. Hefty slices of soda bread sit next to a tower of homemade scones, with blueberry muffins and mini croissants on the side. There's even a giant slab of honeycomb, so you can spool off some raw honey for your toast.
Get it right, and your first attempt at the breakfast buffet should always look like it's been plated by Jackson Pollock. But the hot food is best left to the professionals. The pancakes are Instagram-ready, deliciously springy and sitting in a pool of creme anglaise, with a sprinkling of edible flowers on top. With an extra plate of crispy bacon to the side, you couldn't ask for more. Well, unless you have a few Danish pastries for afters, that is.
A moment, too, for the breakfast beverages. I'm always looking for at least three options in front of me – freshly squeezed orange juice, some form of smoothie and a coffee, preferably pressed in a cafetiere.
One of the joys of a hotel breakfast is the fact that you can enjoy a languid meal without rushing. You're not eating a bowl of cereal while absentmindedly watching the news or thinking about the washing-up. You're starting the day with a treat, tucking into a veritable feast while plotting the adventures of the day ahead – where you're going to go, what you're going to see, and, if you're anything like me, what you're going to have for dinner. Because if you're doing a hotel breakfast right, you will most likely be too full to eat lunch.
You're also getting a little peek into local life, long before you've even put your coat on. A good hotel breakfast is a showcase of the best local produce.
And don't get me started on another one of life's great pleasures: the room service breakfast. You may miss out on the joy of browsing the buffet, but you get to tick off your choices on the menu the night before, hang it on the doorknob, then wait for the following morning when you can eat waffles in bed while watching TV. If you ask me, any day that starts off like that is a good one.
Try as you might, a hotel breakfast is an experience that simply can't be replicated anywhere else. Order three breakfast dishes at a cafe, and you're a glutton. Bring 10 different kinds of cereal to your self-catering rental, and you're eccentric. But when you're in a hotel, anything goes. And that's all part of the fun.

The correct way to apply insect repellent revealed, and if you do it wrong you can expect more bites
WHETHER you're holidaying abroad of enjoying the warm UK weather, chances are mosquitoes are going to be an issue. These pesky insects can cause irritating bites, that may also pose a health risk depending on your location. Make sure you're not making an easy error when applying your insect repellant this summer. And if you're travelling abroad, take extra care as bites can sometimes lead to issues such as malaria, dengue, Zika fever, and yellow fever. Bug repellents need to be applied during the day and also at night, and whether you're indoors and outdoors. You should also pay particular attention to the product's label before purchasing. DEET is chemical ingredient found in most bug sprays and shoppers are advised to check for it when picking up a bottle. "A product with 50% DEET is recommended as a first choice," said official Government advice, last updated in 2023. "If DEET is not tolerated, use of a repellent containing the highest strength formulation available of either icaridin (20%), eucalyptus citriodora oil, hydrated, cyclised or 3-ethlyaminopropionate is recommended." And whichever bug spray you opt for, make sure you're applying it at the correct time alongside your other products. This is particularly relevant when it comes to another summer essential: suncream. The Government stressed the importance of always using bug repellant afterward you apply suncream for the most effective results. Plague of parasites that hitch a ride on flying insects and 'slurp liquid from human skin' sweep holiday hotspot You should also opt for suncreams with an SPF of 30 to 50 as DEET can reduce their potency. Most repellents need to be reapplied frequently, especially in hot weather conditions or after spending time in water. Users are encouraged to read each repellent's packaging for more specific guidance. "50% DEET is safe for those pregnant and breastfeeding and for babies older than two months," the Government's guidance explained. "Get advice before you travel from your doctor or pharmacist if your baby is aged under two months. How to prevent tick bites - and remove the bugs There are a few things you can do to lessen your likelihood of tick bites. Firstly, try and cover as much of your skin as possible while walking outdoors and tuck your trousers into your socks. You should also be using insect repellent containing DEET on your clothes and skin, and wearing light coloured clothing so you can spot a tick easily. Also stick to paths where possible when you're out walking. How can I remove a tick safely? To remove a tick safely: Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. You can buy these from some pharmacies, vets and pet shops. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Slowly pull upwards, taking care not to squeeze or crush the tick. Dispose of it when you have removed it. Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water. The chance of getting ill is low. You do not need to do anything else unless you notice a rash or become unwell. If either of these happen, make sure to see a GP so you can get treatment as soon a possible. "Take insect repellents with you—in case of shortages at your destination." You can also make use of other steps to prevent bites, including wearing long-sleeved clothing and treating nets with insecticide. These are particularly important in situations where you might be sleeping outdoors or in a space without air conditioning. "Check your net for rips and tuck the ends under the mattress," the Government advised. "There may also be a risk of bites from ticks and other insects; the same protective measures will help reduce bites from these too." 2

Ireland pair Jamison Gibson-Park and Hugo Keenan are injury concerns for the British and Irish Lions before their first game in Australia against the Western Force on tourists arrived in Perth after a 20-hour journey from Dublin via Doha, Qatar, with head coach Andy Farrell revealing lingering issues with scrum-half Gibson-Park (glute) and full-back Keenan (calf), who both missed Leinster's victory in the United Rugby Championship (URC) centre Huw Jones has recovered from an Achilles issue though and is available for the opening game of the tour at Optus Stadium."We'll see how they pull up in midweek," Farrell said of Gibson-Park and Keenan."Huw Jones is good, he's been training. He trained fully with us last week so he's up and running."The Lions are likely to field a side including players from Leinster, Bath and Leicester, despite players from those clubs joining up with the squad late after their respective URC and Premiership finals. Scotland wing Duhan van der Merwe was pictured with ice on his foot during the Lions' disappointing 28-24 defeat by Argentina at Aviva Stadium on Friday, but Farrell confirmed there were no fresh injury concerns."We're here to build for what's going to be a fantastic Test series. We want to play some good rugby along the way," he added."We'll find out more about each other as we keep on going. Of course we'll analyse what went on against Argentina and why, but that's all part of the journey - to understand where we need to go next."It's great to be here, this is what it's all about. We're here for a good time. Hopefully we can start this part of the tour off really well on Saturday."

Kevin De Bruyne brands Brazil icon Ronaldo as the 'nicest legend in the game' while holidaying with Liverpool star in France
Former Manchester City captain Kevin De Bruyne has hailed Brazilian legend Ronaldo after meeting him while on holiday. De Bruyne is enjoying time off after a rollercoaster campaign with Manchester City and Belgium. The 33-year-old, who joined Napoli earlier this month, has been soaking up the sun in Southern France with Liverpool 's Virgil van Dijk. The pairs crossed path with legendary striker Ronaldo, 48, and posed for a photo all smiles. And De Bruyne was full of compliment for the South American, writing on Instagram: 'Nicest legend in the game', with a heart emoji. Ronaldo is currently in Biot, France, attending the Patrick Mouratoglou Charity Gala. The pair have holidayed together in the past, with Van Dijk previously praising the Belgian star back in 2022. Despite Manchester City and Liverpool's rivalry over the past seven years, De Bruyne and Van Dijk have remained good friends away from the sport. He said: 'Someone that I've never played with before but would love at Liverpool is Kevin De Bruyne. 'I think he's unbelievable. If he would have played at Liverpool we would have gone even further than we already have. 'I think he's outstanding, good on the ball, pressing, scoring, he's got everything as a modern-day midfielder and footballer in general. I think he's an outstanding player.' De Bruyne has also previously been complimentary of van Dijk, telling Sky Sports: 'He's got everything. I know him well: he's got right foot, left foot, speed, height, he's a leader. Thiago [Silva] is also amazing, but I just think Virgil has got that little bit more.'
