National Trust's largest lowland peat restoration a ‘powerful step forward'

Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire, which has been looked after by the conservation charity since 1899, has undergone six months of various works to help secure its future.
One task was installing a waterproof liner along 300 metres of a perimeter boundary where water had been escaping, helping to retain moisture in the peat and lock carbon in the soil.
The overall scheme spanned 590 acres of lowland peat.

Emma Ormond-Bones, general manager at Wicken Fen, said: 'Nature is declining at an alarming rate, and the climate crisis is placing unprecedented pressure on the places and species we care about.
'This project is a huge achievement for the National Trust and a powerful step forward in the restoration of our natural world.
'It's providing the space and conditions nature needs to recover, while also helping to store carbon and make landscapes more resilient to future environmental challenges.'
Another part of the project focused on Burwell Fen, which was reclaimed for agriculture during the Second World War and acquired by the National Trust in 2001.
A clay bund was constructed and the fen was re-wetted, with rare wetland birds such as cranes and great egrets appearing within hours of the water level being raised.
Ellis Selway, peatland restoration project manager, said: 'Watching cranes arrive so soon after we raised the water was a moment I won't forget.
'It made all the effort and planning worthwhile.
'These birds are a sign that wetland life is returning, and fast.
'Seeing nature respond so quickly gives us real hope for the future of this landscape.'
New solar-powered pumps are now helping to manage water levels sustainably.

The restoration works also unearthed a bog oak which was then dated by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit using tree-ring analysis.
The results show the oak began growing in 2,894 BC and lived for 222 years, pre-dating the start of peat formation.
The National Trust said the find was older than the stones at Stonehenge.
Mark Knight, from Cambridge Archaeological Unit, said: 'This discovery exemplifies that wonderful relationship between depth and time, which comes with exploring the peat fen.
'Traces of past landscapes abound beneath its surface, and what's more, they come beautifully preserved and in clear chronological order.'

The tomb of an unknown pharaoh has been discovered by archaeologists in Egypt - but the king's name has been lost to the ages, with researchers now scrambling to find out who he was Archaeologists were left scratching their heads after unearthing the tomb of an unknown Egyptian pharaoh seven metres under the surface, with the identity of the mummified sovereign perplexing experts. The newfound tomb, nestled in the ancient Mount Anubis region of Abydos, is casting fresh light on regal burials within the necropolis. ‌ Amidst the continuing mysteries, faded carvings depicting the deities Isis and Nephthys were spotted alongside the entryway to the burial chamber, yet another puzzle for archaeologists. ‌ Researchers noted another extraordinary find - a set of yellow bands, which they believe would have once displayed the ruler's name in hieroglyphics. Similarities between the unearthed adornments and glyphs with those found at King Senebkay's grave have caught the attention of scholars, reports the Express. "The king's name was originally recorded in painted scenes on plastered brickwork that decorated the underground entrance to the limestone burial chamber," said Josef Wegner, an Egyptologist from the University of Pennsylvania who oversaw the dig, in his discussion with Live Science. "However, the hieroglyphic texts were damaged by ancient tomb robbers, and not enough survives to read the king's name." According to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, this crypt is speculated to be over 3,600 years old and connected to a monarch from an era marked by conflict and turmoil. ‌ During this period, the Hyksos dynasty held sway over lower Egypt. The Hyksos, a name translating to "rulers of foreign lands," were a people from western Asia who introduced pivotal technologies, including the horse and chariot. The tomb itself was constructed from a limestone burial chamber overlaid with mud brick vaults, reaching an impressive height of approximately 5m. Mohamed Abdel Badie, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector, noted that the newly unearthed tomb appears significantly larger than other mausoleums from the Abydos Dynasty discovered to date. ‌ The identity of the tomb's occupant remains a mystery, but it is believed to belong to one of the kings who ruled prior to Senebkay, according to Badie. This groundbreaking discovery follows closely on the heels of another major archaeological find – the Royal burial site of Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose II. The same excavation also revealed a pottery workshop dating back to the Roman era in the village of Banawit, located north of Abydos. Abydos is one of the most ancient cities in Egypt, with its history stretching back to the Abydos Dynasty, a succession of kings who governed Upper Egypt between 1700 and 1600 BC. Anna-Latifa Mourad-Cizek, an archaeologist at the University of Chicago, underscored the potential of this find to reshape our understanding of a relatively obscure period in ancient history. She pointed out that there is currently "a very limited body of evidence" regarding this region and its rulers, rendering the discovery of the tomb "highly significant." However, much work remains to be done to fully unravel the secrets of this ancient site.

Codebreaker Alan Turing's scientific papers sell for ‘record' £465,000

Scientific papers belonging to the Second World War codebreaker and computing pioneer Alan Turing which were nearly shredded after being discovered in a loft have sold for a total of £465,400 at auction. The archive of papers belonging to the mathematician, including a signed personal copy of his 1939 PhD dissertation, Systems Of Logic Based On Ordinals and On Computable Numbers from 1937, described as the first programming manual of the computer age, were sold on Tuesday, Hansons Auctioneers said. The archive, which sold for what is thought to be a record sum for such Turing material, had originally been gifted to Turing's friend and fellow mathematician, Norman Routledge, by Turing's mother, Ethel. The papers, known as 'offprints', were produced in small numbers and distributed within academia, making them rare survivors. Routledge kept the papers, which also included letters from the novelist EM Forster, and on his death they were taken to a relative's loft after his home in Bermondsey, London, was cleared out. One of Routledge's nieces previously said: 'When (Routledge) died in 2013, two of his sisters had the unenviable task of sorting through and emptying the contents. 'There were lots of personal papers which one sister carted away and stored in her loft. The papers lay dormant until she moved into a care home almost a decade later. 'Her daughters came across the papers and considered shredding everything. Fortunately, they checked with Norman's nieces and nephews because he'd always been a presence in our lives.' Auctioneers had estimated the lots would sell for £40,000 to £60,000 each, but On Computable Numbers alone sold for £208,000, Hansons said. Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals sold for another £110,500, with bidders on phones, online and in person at Rare Book Auctions, part of Hansons, in Lichfield, Staffordshire. The collection also included The Chemical Basis Of Morphogenesis, which sold for £19,500. Dating from 1952, it is Turing's lesser-known masterpiece of mathematical biology and his last major published work. Meanwhile, a single piece of paper which was Turing's first published paper in 1935, called Equivalence Of Left And Right Almost Periodicity, sold for £7,800. It was also gifted to Routledge by Turing's mother and her handwritten letter dated May 16 1956 was included. The letter reads: 'I have to-day sent by registered post 13 of Alan's off-prints … I have had some requests to write a biography of Alan … I have masses of material because from the time he was about 6 I spotted a winner – despite many detractors at school – and kept many papers about him.' Jim Spencer, director of Rare Book Auctions, said of the papers, which were brought to experts in a carrier bag: 'Nothing could've prepared me for what I found in that carrier bag. 'These plain, academic papers were absolutely electrifying – they are the very bedrock of modern computing. Handling them was both humbling and haunting. 'Knowing the tragic arc of Turing's life only adds to the emotional weight. He was treated appallingly despite all he had done and yet, here, his ideas remain alive, relevant, and revolutionary.' Mr Spencer added: 'This was the most important archive I've ever handled. The papers came within inches of being destroyed, and instead they've captured the world's imagination. 'It's a once-in-a-lifetime discovery – not just for collectors, but for the sake of preserving the story of one of the greatest minds in history.' Turing, who is widely regarded as the father of computing science, played a central role in breaking the Enigma code, used by the Nazis during the Second World War.

N Ireland motorcyclist, war veteran and public inquiry chairwoman honoured

One of the world's most renowned road racers, an astrophysicist and the first woman to chair a public inquiry in Northern Ireland are among those being honoured by the King in his birthday honours. The region also has the oldest person to be honoured on the list, with 106-year-old Second World War veteran Norman Irwin, from Coleraine, in line for a British Empire Medal (BEM). Dozens of people from Northern Ireland have been recognised, including former permanent secretary at the Department of Health Peter May with the Order of the Bath for public service, and Michael Dunlop, 36, being made an MBE for services to motorcycle racing. From starting his racing journey as one of the famous Dunlop family dynasty of Ballymoney, Co Antrim, in 2006, Michael has gone on to become the most successful rider in the history of the Isle of Man TT, with 32 wins, and has overall won more than 120 national road races. He said: 'I've spent years pushing through every high and low life could throw at me. No matter the challenge, I've always given everything 100% on and off the track. 'To now be recognised in this way is a privilege beyond words.' Astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, 81, originally from Lurgan, Co Armagh, who as a doctoral student discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, is to be made a Companion of Honour, and Christine Smith KC, from Co Down, chairwoman of the Urology Services Inquiry, is being made a CBE. Ms Smith said she is 'deeply honoured'. 'I feel privileged to be the recipient as the first woman to chair a public inquiry in Northern Ireland,' she said. 'I see it as a recognition of the incredible mentors and champions I have had throughout my career, and I am most grateful for their support. 'I also see it as a reflection of the collective effort of my team on the Urology Services Inquiry (USI,) and those I have been lucky to work with on previous inquiries, including the Independent Neurology Inquiry (INI), the Renewable Heat Incentive Inquiry (RHI) and in particular the Inquiry into Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA).' Meanwhile, Richard Taylor, governor of Hydebank Wood Secure College and Women's Prison, is being made an OBE for public service. Mr Taylor credited the whole team of staff for being part of a 10-year process of turning the south Belfast facility around, following a critical inspection report in 2013, to being described as a 'model of excellence'.
