Malaysia exploring new palm oil markets amidst geopolitical conflicts
THE government is exploring new markets for Malaysia's palm oil in an effort to reduce the nation's reliance on major exporting markets affected by geopolitical conflicts.
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the ongoing Israel-Iran crisis and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have disrupted export shipments to certain zones.
'Malaysia currently exports goods worth RM186 billion annually to global markets, including palm oil, but part of these markets are now considered high-risk due to armed conflicts.
'As such, we are exploring new markets, namely, countries that have yet to purchase Malaysian palm oil or cooking oil. This is crucial to ensure that our export levels remain stable,' he said, adding that the country is currently trading with nearly 80 nations, with plans to expand its reach even further.
Speaking to reporters after attending the Dialogue with KPK programme at the MARA Poly-Tech College, Kota Bharu here today, the minister also urged plantation operators and smallholders to work closely with the government to ensure the resilience of the national commodities sector on the global stage.
He noted that planters and operators must work with the government to address challenges at the international level.
'The European market is increasingly emphasising environmental sustainability and biodiversity-friendly practices in palm oil procurement.
'To enter their markets, we must prove that our plantations meet their standards, comply with sustainability principles and preserve biodiversity,' he said.
Johari added that providing good service and meeting buyer requirements should be a priority to help turn new buyers into long-term customers.
'We are asking them to buy more from us, but the service we provide is just as important,' he said. — BERNAMA

Palestine Embassy condemns Gaza Humanitarian Foundation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Palestine Embassy in Malaysia has condemned the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), describing the aid distribution initiative as a veiled operation that further endangered innocent aid seekers in the enclave. First Secretary of Embassy Amjad Khamaysa said the US and Israel-backed entity undermined genuine humanitarian efforts and worsen the oppression of Palestinians suffering under the regime's brutality. "They (Israel) don't allow humanitarian access to Gaza and they are establishing this Gaza Humanitarian institution. Unfortunately, these distribution centres are used to hunt Palestinians. "They (Palestinians) come to get aid and they are killed (by Israel) there," he told Bernama at the "More Than A War, It's Genocide" forum, organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) here, Saturday. He also condemned the regime's banning of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from carrying out its humanitarian mission in Gaza. Since May 7, Israel has been bypassing UN and international relief organisations by distributing limited aid through the GHF, which was rejected by the UN. According to Anadolu Ajansi, Palestinians seeking aid through this mechanism have become daily targets of Israeli fire, resulting in many casualties. Amjad said the embassy will continue to engage with the public to raise awareness and solidarity against the regime's ongoing genocide on Palestine and its people through various channels, including through cooperation with Malaysian civil societies and the digital sphere. Over 55,000 people in Gaza – mostly women and children – have been killed since Israel launched its aggression on October 7, 2023. The regime imposed total blockade since last March, further aggravating the already severe humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

Malaysians show solidarity with Palestine at Kota Baru rally
KOTA BARU: Thousands of Malaysians showed up at the grounds of Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium here Saturday (June 21) night in solidarity with Palestinians at the "Himpunan 10K Malam Untukmu Palestin" rally. Kelantan youth, sports, non-governmental organisation and community unity committee chairman Zamakhshari Muhammad said that the rally allowed Malaysians to come together and state their stand against the cruelty of the Israel regime against the Palestinian people in Gaza. "The rally also creates awareness for people in Kelantan and Malaysia that the Palestinian issue is a universal humanitarian issue that should be championed by all," he told Bernama at the rally Saturday. The rally was also held in conjunction with the international conference held today involving over 150 participants from various countries, including Palestine, Turkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Kingdom, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, the Philippines and South Africa.
