AAIB to decide where to analyse black boxes of crashed Air India plane after assessing ‘technical, safety, security' considerations

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will take a call on where the black boxes of the doomed Air India Boeing 787 will be decoded after assessing all technical, safety, and security considerations, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said Thursday, indicating that no decision has been taken yet on whether the data recorder will be analysed in India or will be sent abroad. The ministry's remarks came amid reports and speculation that the black box—flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder—may be sent to the US as AAIB's black box lab might not be fully equipped to handle damaged units.
'It has been reported in certain media outlets that the CVR/DFDR (cockpit voice recorder/digital flight data recorder) from the ill-fated AI171 flight is being sent abroad for retrieval and analysis. The decision regarding the location for decoding the flight recorders will be taken by the AAIB after due assessment of all technical, safety, and security considerations. The Ministry of Civil Aviation urges all stakeholders to refrain from speculation on such sensitive matters and to allow the investigative process to proceed with the seriousness and professionalism it warrants,' MoCA said in a release.
'The AAIB investigation is progressing steadily with all necessary support from local authorities and agencies. Key recovery work, including site documentation and evidence collection, has been completed, and further analysis is now underway,' MoCA said, giving an update on the probe.
Boeing 787 aircraft have two combined black box sets, each with the joint functions of CVR and DFDR. According to industry insiders, the combined black box is called an Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR), and regulations require two units to be located in the aircraft—one at the front and one at the aft, or rear section—for redundancy, in case of unit is significantly damaged or is never recovered. The first EAFR were recovered on June 13 from the crash site in Ahmedabad, just a day after the crash, while the second was recovered on June 16. The government has so far not commented on the extent of damage the black boxes suffered in the crash.
The purpose of the DFDR is to record flight data on numerous parameters of aircraft operations, while the CVR records the flight crew's voices, as well as other sounds inside the cockpit, including engine noise, stall warnings, landing gear extension and retraction, and other clicks and pops. Communications with air traffic control, automated radio weather briefings, and conversation between the pilots and ground or cabin crew are also recorded.
Sources indicated that deliberations are underway on whether to send units to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Vehicle Recorder Laboratory in the US for data extraction and analysis, or perform the exercise at the AAIB's new black box lab in Delhi, but a decision is yet to be taken. The NTSB is already assisting the AAIB in the probe as the aircraft was manufactured in the US by an American company—Boeing.
'It will depend on the condition. The investigators will have to ascertain the absolute integrity of the black boxes, and if they are confident about it, they would like to analyse them at the new lab instead of sending it to an overseas facility,' a source had earlier told The Indian Express.
'The new (AAIB) lab is a world-class facility but there are highly specialised labs in a few countries that may be superior. If the investigators feel that the DFDR or the CVR are not in a state that the AAIB lab can handle, or if the extent of data analysis that they require for the probe is beyond its capability, then they might decide to send it to an even more advanced facility, most likely in the US as the aircraft involved was a Boeing plane,' said another source, adding that if the units are sent abroad an AAIB team will accompany them to ensure their 'safety, security, and integrity'.
The new and advanced AAIB lab, built by support of government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and inaugurated in April, has enhanced the agency's ability to repair damaged black boxes, retrieve data, and conduct thorough analyses of accidents with high accuracy. Earlier, a black box lab under the aviation safety regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was being used by the AAIB, but the facility was old and lacked the a few key capabilities needed for thorough and accurate data retrieval and analysis, said a source. That was one of the reasons why a number of black boxes from aircraft involved in serious accidents were sent to overseas labs, said a source.
Last Thursday's crash claimed the lives of 241 of 242 people on board the plane that was operating Air India flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. Lives were also lost on the ground as the plane crashed into a medical college hostel close to the Ahmedabad airport. This is the first wide-body crash for an Indian airline in four decades. It is also the first crash of a Boeing 787 globally. Both the black boxes are expected to play a critical role in the air crash investigation.

New Delhi: Just a week after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London, the national carrier is now facing intense backlash from passengers over poor service, damaged baggage, mishandled refunds, and alleged harassment, all of which are surfacing on social media platform X. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, claiming 275 lives that included 241 passengers and crew and 34 people on the ground, as the plane had crashed into a hostel of a medical college. The crash, one of the worst in Indian aviation history, has put the airline under a harsh spotlight. And now, passengers are voicing their long-standing frustrations, painting a troubling picture of Air India's service standards. A user named Qamar Saquib posted that on June 18, while travelling from Patna to Jeddah via Delhi on Air India flights AI-2634 and AI-991, he discovered that his gold (5.5 grams) was missing from his luggage upon arrival in Jeddah. 'I filed a complaint immediately at the Jeddah airport,' he wrote, tagging the airline for accountability. Jasmeet Singh raised a separate issue, accusing Air India of not honouring a refund promise made by airport staff. 'It's a clear case of cheating. The staff was insensitive to my mother, a senior citizen, who was travelling with my sisters,' he wrote. In another disturbing post, a user named Sakina alleged that Air India fraudulently cancelled her grandparents' tickets from Mumbai to Bengaluru, both of whom are heart patients. 'On June 9, I received an email saying the tickets for June 26 had been cancelled through the website — something I never did,' she claimed. The refund provided was a mere Rs 1,400 for tickets worth Rs 15,000, and customer service has reportedly gone silent. 'This is a scam,' she wrote, calling the act 'a breach of security' and 'fraudulent.' Yash, another flyer, said he was mentally and physically harassed when he was forced to switch seats multiple times on flight AI-558, despite pre-booking seat 12D. 'I have back problems and was shifted from 12D to 16C, and then to 29D,' he said. Passenger Rajneesh Khullar, tagging the Ministry of Civil Aviation and DGCA, expressed frustration over broken baggage and zero response from Air India. 'We got our bags after a week. One was broken. I have sent over two dozen emails and filed a claim (Case #23700866), but there has been no response,' he wrote. Parul Kumar, who flew on AI-309, called out the airline for 'super dirty' toilets, non-functional screens, and unresponsive attendants, despite paying AUD 1,500 for the tickets. 'Very pathetic service,' she said bluntly. Another flyer, who goes by AR, shared a video from flight AI-810 and requested Air India to change the 'dirty and worn-out tapestry' on its aircraft 'for the sake of Tata Group's reputation and in memory of late Shri Ratan Tata.' These complaints are now adding to the growing pressure on Air India, which is already under scrutiny after the deadly June 12 crash. The national carrier, which was expected to undergo a revival under the Tata Group's ownership, is now facing renewed criticism not only for technical and safety lapses but also for widespread service failures.

Days after the tragic Air India AI-717 plane crash the suspense surrounding a 52-year-old 'missing' woman and her granddaughter ended after a DNA test confirmed they were among the deceased, PTI quoted her family as saying. According to the report, Sarlaben Thakor has been employed as a cook at the mess at a medical hostel complex in Ahmedabad for the past 15 years. Sarlaben and two-year-old granddaughter Aadhya were handed over to their family members on Thursday at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after a DNA test confirmed their death in the June 12 tragedy. "After the DNA test, the bodies of my mother Sarlaben and daughter Aadhya were handed over to us on Thursday. With a heavy heart, we cremated them the same day," PTI quoted Ravi Thakor, son of the woman, as saying. Ravi Thakor along with his family, including his deceased mother, and wife Lalita, for the past 15 years used to cook food for MBBS students at the hostel mess of BJ Medical College situated in Meghaninagar, where the tragedy struck in the afternoon more than a week ago. Just before the AI-717 plane crash, Ravi and Lalita Thakor left the mess for Civil Hospital to deliver food tiffins for senior resident doctors, while Aadhya and Sarlaben remained at the mess, where MBBS students living in the hostel gather for meal. "We left the mess at around 1 pm to deliver tiffins at the hospital. At around 1:40 pm, a plane suddenly smashed into the mess as well as the adjoining hostel building, and the entire area was engulfed in fire. When we reached the spot, my mother and daughter were missing while all other women working in the mess managed to come out," said Ravi Thakor. Following the AI-717 crash, Ravi Thakor and his wife frantically searched for Sarlaben and Aadhya at every possible location, including all wards of Civil Hospital and even the post-mortem room, but failed to locate them. Ravi's wife Lalita said they used to take along their son and daughter to the mess every day and leave them in custody of Sarladevi while going out to deliver tiffins at Civil Hospital. "My son was also in that building when the plane crashed. Luckily, he took cover inside the laundry shop of the hostel and then came out safely. After failing to locate my daughter and mother-in-law, we registered a missing persons' complaint and gave our DNA samples for matching with bodies," she said. Doctors matched the DNA samples with the mortal remains of Sarlaben and Aadhya a week after the crash and handed them over to the grieving kin on Thursday after establishing their identity. On 12 June, at 1.39 pm, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, with 242 persons on board crashed into the medical hostel complex in Meghaninagar moments after taking off for London from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. In the accident, more than 270 persons, including passengers and crew members (241) and those on the ground (29), were killed, while subsequent fire, which engulfed the aircraft as well as hostel buildings killed more people.

Air India has come under fire after its AI171 aircraft- a Boeing 787 -8 Dreamliner- crashed during takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, killing all but one of the 242 people on board in addition to at least 28 people on the ground. According to the DGCA report cited by Reuters, the aviation watchdog found that three Air India Airbus planes were being operated despite mandatory inspections being overdue on the "critical emergency equipment" of escape slides, during spot checks last month. In one case, an Airbus A320 jet was found to have flown to international destinations such as Dubai, Riyadh and Jeddah, despite an over one-month delay in carrying out inspections.
