Food courts to come up on plots that have gone cold
Chennai: In the next year, the city will turn unused corners into places people flock to for food. The
Greater Chennai Corporation
(GCC) is working on a plan to convert vacant land and underused municipal buildings in busy parts of the city into food courts.
These spaces, until now ignored, will soon see crowds, kitchens, and the smell of fresh food in the air.
In the first phase, GCC picked three sites: the land next to the Ripon Buildings on Sydenhams Road, a plot on Indira Nagar 3rd Avenue, and a stretch near the Alandur metro parking lot. All three spots lie unused today. GCC plans to turn them into clean, affordable food courts with a range of popular cuisines.
"We are doing this based on the model CMRL adopted near Ashok Nagar metro station," said M Birathiviraj, deputy commissioner (revenue and finance).
"We'll build the shell structures with essential facilities such as parking and basic amenities, and then lease them out to vendors or food chains."
To get things moving, GCC has floated a tender to hire a consultant who will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The consultant's scope will include topographical and geotechnical surveys, architectural and structural designs, 3D visualisations, and preparation of tender and construction-ready documents.
The DPR is expected to be ready in the next few months. Once it is done, GCC will float tenders for construction. Officials plan to expand the model in phases and are scouting more empty land and unused shopping complexes across the city.
"These are not just food courts," a senior GCC official said. "We are creating well-planned, lively public spaces while monetizing municipal assets."

It's not just about food; it's about developing the area holistically."
Satish Galley, a civic activist, said, "A well-planned food court in the neighbourhood with proper sanitation, waste management, and crowd control is needed. Many public spaces are now converted to dumpyards or a hangout space for troublemakers. We hope the voices of local residents will be considered in the planning process."

HYDERABAD: Days after Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy met Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar at his residence in New Delhi and briefed him on the importance of the Phase-2 project, the Telangana govt submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and all required documents for the Phase-2 (B) proposal to the central govt, according to Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited managing director NVS Reddy. The Phase 2 (B) proposal includes three corridors: RGIA to Bharat Future City (Skills University), covering 39.6 km at a cost of Rs 7,168 crore; JBS to Medchal, spanning 24.5 km at Rs 6,946 crore; and JBS to Shamirpet, extending 22 km at Rs 5,465 crore. Similar to the previously submitted Phase 2 (A) project, which comprised five corridors totalling 76.4 km, Phase 2 (B) is also proposed as a joint venture between the central govt and the Telangana govt. According to the central govt's JV norms, funding will comprise Rs 5,874 crore (30%) from the Telangana govt, Rs 3,524 crore (18%) from the central govt, Rs 9,398 crore (48%) in the form of debt from international financial institutions and Rs 783 crore (4%) through a public-private partnership (PPP) component.

Govt forms committee to submit proposals for e-buses
Vijayawada: State govt has formed a state level steering committee (SLSC) for the submission of proposals to the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) for the procurement of electric buses under the 'PM e-Bus Sewa' scheme. The Centre sanctioned 750 electric buses to Andhra Pradesh under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. Chief secretary K Vijaynand issued a govt order RT No 310 to this effect, forming the SLBC on Thursday. According to the GO, the SLBC will be headed by the chief secretary as the chairman, with the special chief secretary (energy), principal secretaries of transport, roads and buildings, finance, municipal administration and urban development, and industries & commerce departments, along with the commissioner of the public transport department as the committee members. The ministry of housing & urban affairs (MoHUA) sanctioned 750 e-buses to AP to be operated in 12 locations across 11 cities. Pinnacle Mobility Solutions Pvt Ltd, Pune, along with the discovered GCC prices, is finalised as the agency for the induction of 750 e-buses in the state. The requisition for the procurement of the e-buses should be submitted to MoHUA under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme through the SLSC under the chairmanship of the chief secretary, the GO read.

Extension of Kochi Water Metro service proposed in developing Kadambrayar as a tourism destination
Extending the Kochi Water Metro service using feeder boats from Kakkanad to Kadambrayar in Ernakulam for sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly transit for tourists and Infopark professionals figured among the recommendations included in a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed enhancement of Kadambrayar tourism destination centre. A well-designed, eco-friendly boat jetty has been proposed to facilitate the service. A floating or fixed reinforced cement concrete jetty based on water conditions, covered passenger waiting area with seating, safety railings, signage, and lighting, information display about the water metro schedules, easy pedestrian access from the riverfront promenade and integrated CCTV and Wi-Fi zones for safety and digital access are some of the features proposed for the jetty. 'We have already discussed the proposal with the Kochi Metro Rail Limited, and the outcome has been, by and large, positive. A more detailed discussion will have to be held,' said P.V. Sreenijin, Kunnathunadu MLA. Smaller boats He said that boats smaller than those used for the water metro services will have to be designed for the proposed service, considering the lack of vertical clearance under the Brahmapuram Bridge. The project has already received administrative sanction from the government. Once the technical sanction is also granted, the tourism department will tender it. The ₹3.50 crore project was approved during the chief minister's Nava Kerala Sadas. The DPR, however, proposes a three-phased development with an estimated investment of ₹5.50 crores. The first phase proposes a walkway widening, lighting, parking, and a café at an estimated ₹2 crores to be completed in six months. The second phase includes a proposed amphitheatre, gym, a boat jetty and parking facilities at an investment of another ₹2 crores in six months. Beautification and other amenities for ₹1.50 crores have been proposed in the final phase. The DPR observes that the Kadambrayar riverfront, with its natural beauty and ideal urban-rural interface, presents an exceptional opportunity for Kerala to showcase a sustainable tourism success story. It concludes that through targeted interventions, smart infrastructure, and community involvement, Kadambrayar can be developed as a model riverfront destination attracting urban professionals, families, and global tourists alike.
