Shirtless American Airlines passenger tackles, pins crew member as flight to Chicago is thrown off course

Independent28-05-2025

An American Airlines flight from Connecticut to Chicago was thrown into chaos Tuesday night when a passenger suddenly ripped off his shirt and assaulted a flight attendant, pinning the crew member to the cabin floor as shocked travelers scrambled to and pry him off.
Julius Jordan Priester allegedly became 'incoherent,' authorities said, once the journey was underway, according to a federal complaint filed Wednesday and obtained first by The Independent.
The midair melee forced the pilot to divert the plane back to Bradley International Airport in Hartford.
Priester, a 24-year-old Kansas resident, is currently on probation for a previous aggravated assault conviction, prosecutors said in a detention motion.
An American Airlines spokesperson did not immediately respond on Wednesday to a request for comment. Priester does not yet have an attorney listed in court filings and was unable to be reached for comment.
On the evening of May 27, American flight 3359 took off without incident, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by an FBI agent in support of the complaint against Priester. However, the affidavit goes on, things took a sharp turn for the worse less than an hour into the two-hour-and-forty-minute trip.
That's when Priester, who was seated toward the rear of the aircraft, abruptly stood up, removed his top, and ran to the back of the plane, yelling, 'Help me,' the affidavit states.
Priester then grabbed a flight attendant by the shirt collar, shouted, 'You're coming with me,' and 'forcefully brought the [flight attendant] to the ground,' the affidavit continues.
As he 'attempted to drag the [flight attendant] up the aisle,' the affidavit says, other members of the flight crew shouted at Priester to stop. But Priester allegedly 'refused to comply with repeated flight crew instructions to cease his actions, and he held the [flight attendant] to the ground.'
Another flight attendant reported the fracas to the captain, who declared an emergency and diverted the plane back to Hartford, the affidavit states.
'Priester was returned to a seat after the intervention of passengers on board the aircraft,' according to the affidavit.
'While under watch of one of the intervening passengers, Priester continued to act in an erratic manner, grabbing and holding onto the arm of the passenger and making incoherent statements.'
Court filings do not provide details on what might have prompted Priester's outburst.
The flight landed safely back at Bradley Airport shortly after 10 p.m., and Priester was removed by officers with the Connecticut State Police, the affidavit says. An ambulance transported Priester to a local hospital for evaluation, where he was formally arrested on Wednesday by the FBI on one count of interference with flight crew members, a felony.
In a detention motion filed alongside the complaint, prosecutors called Priester's alleged offense 'extremely serious,' arguing that he put 'the safety of all the passengers in danger.'
The motion says Priester has an established criminal history, and that his employment history and family ties to Connecticut are 'largely unknown and unverified.'
'Taken together, the government submits that the defendant poses a danger to the community that no condition or combination of conditions will sufficiently mitigate, nor will they reasonably assure his appearance at future proceedings and prevent his likely flight if he is released into the community,' the motion argues.
In the first five months of 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has so far fielded 637 reports of unruly passengers; the agency received a total of 2,102 unruly passenger reports in 2024.
Bad behavior in the sky hit a modern-day high in 2021, with 5,973 passengers being reported for unruliness.
Earlier this year, a retired New York City firefighter was arrested after authorities said he got drunk and tried to enter the cockpit on an American Airlines flight from New York City to Tokyo. In March, a serial groper was banned for life from American following his third in-flight groping allegation aboard one of the carrier's airplanes.

The most stomach-churning photos from the infamous poop cruise stuck at sea for days on end

Carnival's 'poop cruise' that saw thousands of passengers stuck at sea for five days as sewage flooded the ship is set to be featured in a new Netflix series. Due to stream on June 24, episode three of 'Trainwreck' - the series that looks at several disasters, will focus solely on the trainwreck - or shipwreck - that was the voyage of the Carnival Triumph in February 2013. The ship was meant to embark on a four day sojourn out of New Orleans, Louisiana throughout the Gulf of Mexico. But, on day four, an electrical fire broke out and turned the entire trip on its head. The accident engulfed the ship's electrical cables in flames. Those cables powered the Triumph's entire electrical system including the power, refrigeration, propulsion, air conditioning and the power to flush the toilets. While at sea they were impossible to repair and the entire cruise ship had to be sustained by a singular generator. As a result, the boat powerlessly drifted in the Gulf of Mexico for four days, completely unable to accommodate its nearly 4,000 passengers with basic needs like food and operational toilets. To make matters worse, with just one day left on their trip, Carnival Captains found themselves unable to steer the ship at all thanks to the power outage. Passenger Tammy Garcia said at the time: 'It wasn't vacation anymore, it was like survival mode. Eat what you can. Snack when you can. It was awful.' The ship was meant to embark on a four day sojourn out of New Orleans, Louisiana throughout the Gulf of Mexico. But, on day four, an electrical fire broke out and turned the entire trip on its head. Pictured: passengers set up camp on the decks of the boat to avoid the foul smell of their cruise-mates' plumbing Since the cruise was spontaneously increased by four days, staff also quickly ran low on food. The lack of refrigeration made dining limited, passengers documented the slivers of ham on mustard-soaked stale bread that they were served to survive Carnival Triumph (pictured) powerlessly drifted in the Gulf of Mexico for four days, completely unable to accommodate it's nearly 4,000 passengers with basic needs like food and operational toilets Because of the fire, passengers operated completely in the dark and were forced to poop into red biohazard bags and pee in the showers. One passenger, Rian Tipton, told People at the time that some people snubbed the biohazard bags altogether and continued to use the out-of-order toilets. 'Toilets started to overflow and so were the trash cans! People were literally peeing and pooping in the trash cans. 'The worst that I've heard is people going into the public bathrooms and seeing feces on the wall,' she said. The sewage system became overwhelmed by the outage and even began leaking thousands of people's excrement into the floors and hallways. Passengers set up camp on the decks of the boat to avoid the foul smell of their cruise-mates' plumbing. Passenger Robin Chandler, who boarded the cruise to celebrate her birthday said: 'The stench was awful. A lot of people were crying and freaking out.' Since the cruise was spontaneously increased by four days, staff also quickly ran low on food. The lack of refrigeration made dining limited, passengers documented the slivers of ham on mustard-soaked stale bread, looking very similar to the legendary Fyre Festival cheese sandwich, that they were served to survive. One passenger said the food was one of the worst parts, but nothing could compare to the toilet situation. 'The worst thing was the toilets. Going in them little red bags and we just had to put them in the trash. It got to the stage when they said if you have to urinate go in the sink or the shower. 'I'm looking forward to getting to a flushing commode. The cold onion sandwiches were pretty bad too,' the passenger said. After days of ruined plans, rationed food and powerless nights, insanity started to creep in. Passengers made help signs, drew on robes and bedsheets to document the disaster. They had to rely on themselves for comfort and entertainment since the amenities they'd paid for were long gone. Help finally arrived on Valentine's day, February 14. Tug boats ushered the floundering ship for the Gulf to a nearby port in Mobile, Alabama, miles away from the cruise's original docking point. Because of the fire, passengers operated completely in the dark and forced to poop into red bio-hazard bags and pee in the showers 'I feel like I can survive anything now,' said passenger Kendall Jenkins after the horror story she endured on board. 'I just feel so blessed to be home.' Buses to take guests from Alabama the original port left early February 15. It took several hours to disembark the ship with only one elevator in operation. In a statement to Daily Mail this week, Carnival officials said: 'The Carnival Triumph incident over 12 years ago was a teachable moment for the entire cruise industry. 'A thorough investigation following the incident revealed a design vulnerability which was corrected and led Carnival Cruise Line to invest more than $500million across our entire fleet in comprehensive fire prevention and suppression, improved redundancy, and enhanced management systems, all in support of our commitment to robust safety standards. 'We are proud of the fact that since 2013 over 53 million guests have enjoyed safe and memorable vacations with us, and we will continue to operate to these high standards.' In the trailer for the episode, Netflix teases even more drama. Passengers and employees recount fights breaking out aboard the boat and dozens of people suing for mental distress.

EXCLUSIVE Hero schoolboy tells how he saved girlfriend when her Muslim parents tried to strangle her in 'honor killing'

A heroic teenage boy has described how he saved his girlfriend's life as her parents allegedly tried to strangle her in an 'honor killing'. Ihsan Ali, 44, and his wife Zahraa Subhi Mohsin Ali, 40, are charged with second-degree attempted murder and attempted kidnapping after the attack on October 18. The girl, 17, who can't be named, ran away from home to Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington, after her parents tried to put her on a plane to Iraq. 'Her father had recently been threatening her with honor killing for refusing an arranged marriage with an older man in another county,' the girl told police. Shocking video showed Ihsan on the ground with his daughter in a chokehold outside the school, while classmates desperately tried to free her. Ihsan and Zahraa both pleaded not guilty and are expected to go on trial in July. The girl met her boyfriend at the school after she fled her home and school officials arranged for her to stay at a women's shelter. However, the school did not arrange transport there, so the couple went outside to catch a bus, and spotted Ihsan's pickup truck in the car park. The teenage boy explained to police in an interview on November 6 that a friend told him Ihsan had seen them and was heading their way. '[The girl] was scared, shaking, and had a tremble in her voice,' Detective Julie Mullen wrote in a report obtained by the Daily Mail. The boy stood between his girlfriend and her father as they tried to get to the bus as it arrived, and attempted to separate them when Ihsan tried to pull her away. Ihsan then allegedly punched him in the head and he remembered falling down and everything going black. '[He] said when he got up [the girl's] dad was "choking" her and [two other students] punched [Ihsan] in the face and people were yelling to call 911,' Mullen wrote. 'He started punching her dad in the face but he continued to choke [the girl] and said others were trying to pull her out while he continued to punch her dad in the head. 'He continued to punch Ishan until his "head got soft" and he got knocked out.' The boy then helped his girlfriend off the ground, but she 'couldn't breathe' and didn't know what was going on. Just as he was helping her to his feet, he alleged Zahraa and the girl's eldest sister Haneen, 21, came up behind them and pushed him out of the way to get to her. He told police he tried to 'fight them off' by putting up his arm up and pushing them away, and in the melee the girl and Zahraa were pushed to the ground. 'Once [the girl] and her mom were on the ground, her mom put her arm around her neck and started choking her,' Mullen wrote. He said that as he tried to pull the girl away from Zahraa, Haneen yelled 'what are you doing this?' at him. The boy was eventually able to pull his girlfriend to her feet and then away from Haneen when she allegedly grabbed her, and flee towards the school. The brave teenager suffered a 'boxer's fracture' to his finger as he tried to get Ishan off his girlfriend, and bruises and scratches on his head and face. He wasn't diagnosed with a concussion but had symptoms such as sensitivity to light and headaches when he tried to watch TV or play video games. His mother told police it 'took him several days to talk about the incident without crying'. The boy also told police about an earlier incident at the school with Zahraa on September 16 last year where she attacked him. He explained the incident was sparked by Zahraa seeing him and the girl kiss three times outside the school. The girl told him her 'life was ruined' after she realized that her mother had spotted them. '[The girl's] mom grabbed his arm and told him to get in her car but he continued to walk to the bus. [The boy] said he was yelling and causing a scene,' Mullen wrote. The girl earlier told police in a three-hour interview with police on October 24 that she ran away because she was terrified of being taken to Iraq where she would be married off, abused, and forced to have children - never to return home. She explained that after her boyfriend was knocked to the floor with his eyes closed, Ihsan grabbed her in a viscous attack. '[The girl] said her dad yanked her down and put her in a headlock. She said he was "choking" her "really hard" and she remembered grabbing his arm but then passed out,' police wrote. From there, her memory of Ihsan's attack ended, and she only knew what happened by watching the video of her boyfriend and classmates heroically saving her life. But the attempt on her life was not over, as Zahraa allegedly seized her and tried to finish the 'honor killing'. 'Someone pushed them to the ground, and then her mom started to choke her and was screaming in her ear,' Mullen wrote. The girl also detailed her father's alleged threats to kill her for dating an American boy, and refusing an arranged marriage. 'If I could kill you, I would kill you, but I can't do that. I can't do that because there's cops and CPS people involved right now because of you,' she claimed he said. 'And I can't touch you because you will immediately go to the school.' The girl told police Ihsan another time told her he wanted to 'hurt her so badly but there are cops here' but also told her how he would 'kill her no matter what happens' and he 'did not care if anyone saw him'. Police bodycam footage obtain by showed officers arriving at the school and arresting Ihsan, who demanded to speak to his daughter. 'Just let me tell her to come home - not like that. If I tell her to go home, she will go home,' he insisted, but police ignored him. Officers then had to deal with Zahraa and Haneen, who were hysterical and only left after Zahraa was allowed to speak to Ihsan. These are some of the cuts, welts, and broken bones the teenage girl suffered when her parents allegedly tried to strangle her in an 'honor killing' Police did not realize Zahraa also allegedly tried to kill her daughter until four days later, leaving her free to continue looking for her daughter, who was in hiding. Zahraa drove her youngest children, two boys aged five and three, into Canada and dropped them off with an Ihsan's brother and mother, who lived there. She then returned to Washington before trying to cross into Canada a second time with a 'notable quantity of baggage' on the night of October 22, but was arrested by customs officers.

Grade-school math sum leaves people scratching their heads... can you solve the simple problem in 30 seconds?

What seemed like a regular grade school math problem had people totally stumped on social media. The equation 9 x 3 - 9 shared by @BholanathDutta on X left social media users completely mystified. So, are you smarter than a fourth grader? Or better yet, the average adult on X? See if you can solve this equation in 30 seconds or less. But first, here's a hint: Ever heard of PEMDAS? The age-old acronym guides you through the proper order for solving a complicated calculation like this one. It stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and then Subtraction. Using that method, the solution is easy. There are no parentheses or exponents, so multiplication is first. 9 x 3 = 27 Then, the equation reads: 27 - 9 ÷ 3 But before doing any subtraction, PEMDAS implies that division is next. 9 ÷ 3 = 3 Now, it's painless. 27 - 3 = 24 Did you get it right? Commenters under the original X post made the common error of solving the math sum left to right, instead of utilizing the elementary principle. First they multiplied. 9 x 3 = 27 Then, subtracted. 27 - 9 = 18 And then divided. 18 ÷ 3 = 6 A few people even, inexplicably, got 9 as their answer. It had to take some mental gymnastics to find that solution. Sure, a calculator could be an easy shortcut. But, nothing beats the satisfaction of solving a problem yourself.
