
Ian King: The people and events that defined my 11 years at Sky News
It's 6.25pm on Monday 2 June 2014 and my heart is racing.
After 20 years as a national newspaper journalist, plus a few years of working in the City before that, I am about to learn whether I can cut it as a television presenter.
I'd done plenty of broadcast journalism over the years - for BBC Radio Five Live's Weekend Business and Wake Up To Money, BBC Radio Four's Today programme and regular appearances on Sky News - but these were as a guest pundit or, in media jargon, what is known as the "presenter's friend".
This was different. Sky News had entrusted me to step into the sizeable shoes of Jeff Randall, its influential business presenter from September 2007 to March 2014.
After four or five rehearsals using Jeff's old scripts, under the tutelage of experienced director Neil Hunter and with colleagues Dafydd Rees, Katie Mandel and Hannah Capella acting as guests, I was deemed ready.
Broadcasting from Sky's original City Studio, on the 15th floor of the iconic Gherkin building on St Mary Axe, I awaited Neil's cue before uttering the introductory words:
"From the heart of the City, this is Ian King Live."
That first half hour show whizzed by: our guests were Dorothy Thompson, chief executive of power generator Drax; Clive Efford, the shadow minister for sport; and Lily Cole, the model and actress. Not bad on a slow news day although during the programme, overseen by my first producer Peter Hoskins, we also broke news that Frank Lampard would be leaving Chelsea.
The adrenalin was still pumping after the show but abated somewhat after John McAndrew, then executive editor and director of content at Sky News, called to declare it "a bloody brilliant start".
Other guests that week included Andy Griffiths, UK chief executive of Samsung; Ed Balls, the shadow chancellor; Sir Tom Hunter, the billionaire entrepreneur and Tom Crotty, director at the chemicals giant Ineos.
The following week our guests included Sir Terry Leahy, the former Tesco chief executive, giving his first public comments on the accounting black hole recently disclosed by the supermarket; Paul Pester, the TSB chief executive, giving his first broadcast interview ahead of the bank's stock market flotation; Keith Cochrane, chief executive of the FTSE 100 engineer Weir Group; Justin King, in his final broadcast interview as chief executive of Sainsbury's and James Quincey, then head of Coca-Cola's European business but now its global chairman and chief executive. We were up and running.
Now, some 11 years on and after more than 2,000 editions of Ian King Live (the show was rechristened Business Live with Ian King at the end of June 2023), Sky News and I are parting company.
The worlds of business, markets and economics have changed immeasurably in that time. In April 2014, when I joined Sky News, Walmart was the world's biggest company. It is now only the 15th largest in the S&P 500 - dwarfed by tech giants Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Nvidia. Reflecting that increase in importance, US companies now make up around 65% of global stock market capitalisation, compared with just 52% then.
Mark Carney was governor of the Bank of England, David Cameron was prime minister and George Osborne was chancellor; in the US, Barack Obama was president; Jack Lew was US Treasury secretary and Janet Yellen was chair of the Federal Reserve. It all seems such a long time ago now.
The central bank chief with the hardest role back in April 2014, though, was Mario Draghi at the European Central Bank.
Although Ireland and Portugal were about to exit the bailout packages they received at the height of the eurozone sovereign debt crisis, there was still a sense that the fire had not quite been extinguished, which was why the ECB's main policy rate was still zero. The Bank of England and the Fed still had interest rates at close to zero, too, with the latter becoming the first major global central bank to tighten monetary policy in December 2015.
So there was a real sense of crisis still in the air and, over the subsequent decade and a bit, very little has changed. The 2016 Brexit referendum led to some spectacular gyrations in the value of UK equities, bonds and the pound: the day after I did my first live broadcast - from the trading floor at Monex, a stone's throw from the Bank of England - at 5.30am and was still broadcasting 11 hours later.
A few months later, Donald Trump was elected for the first time, with markets rattled by his instigation of a trade war with China soon afterwards.
Then, in 2020, came COVID and, for a few months, it felt as if I was never off the air, bringing news first of the market turmoil that accompanied the lockdowns and then, later, the financial responses to the pandemic from governments, central banks and businesses alike.
By then, having relocated initially to the 'Baby Shard' in 2017, Sky's City Studio had moved again, this time to Fleet Place, close to the Old Bailey. Everyone will have their own memories of lockdown, suffice it to say, going into a deserted City every day was a weird and depressing experience. Not as depressing, though, as interviewing distraught business owners weeping at what the lockdowns were doing to their livelihoods and those of their employees.
Some people, even some in the media industry, disparage business news as being somehow distanced from the human condition. They do not know what they are talking about.
The post-COVID bounce back in late 2021 and early 2022 was great fun to report on. Animal spirits, especially in the US, were back. But then, in September 2022, came Kwasi Kwarteng's mini budget and the eventual departure of both him and Liz Truss.
The latter, incidentally, was one of the more surprising interviews I did at Sky News.
While in the post of justice secretary, she appeared on the programme on the evening of Philip Hammond's autumn statement in November 2016 and, in response to one particularly tricky question on the public finances, replied: "I don't know."
That episode serves to remind just how many changes of personnel we have had during the last 11 years. Past and present chancellors I interviewed at Sky News included Nigel Lawson, Norman Lamont, Ken Clarke, Philip Hammond and Rachel Reeves.
The Bank of England has proved rather more stable although I still interviewed three governors past and present: Lord King, Mark Carney and Andrew Bailey.
Companies too have undergone frequent changes of leadership. During the last 11 years I have interviewed three different chief executives of Tesco, Sainsbury's and BP, two each from - to name a few - Rio Tinto, Centrica, Land Securities, Lloyds Banking Group, Marks & Spencer, GlaxoSmithKline, BAE Systems, National Grid, British Airways, John Lewis Partnership, Prudential, easyJet, Greggs and RBS/NatWest.
Few have had the same chief executive for the entire period but two CEOs who have remained in place throughout are easily among the most outstanding of their generation. One is Sir Pascal Soriot, the French genius who helped AstraZeneca stave off an unwanted takeover bid from Pfizer, before building the drugmaker into the UK's most valuable company.
The other is Michael O'Leary of Ryanair, a man with a rare talent for judging customer demand and for ruthlessly exploiting gaps in the market, even though some may cavil at his communications style.
And now, sadly, it is over.
Thank you to the thousands of guests who submitted themselves to interview over the years and to colleagues past and present. While the presenter is the only person the viewers see on air, TV is a huge team effort, with producers, directors, runners, lighting and sound technicians and make-up artists all contributing.

Weak retail sales and falls in key oil and drug stocks stifle FTSE 100
London's FTSE 100 faded into the close on Friday, ending lower, as weak retail sales data and falls in heavyweight oil and drug stocks offset hopes for progress in the Israel- Iran conflict. The FTSE 100 index closed down 17.15 points, 0.2%, at 8,774.65. It had earlier traded as high as 8,847.28. The FTSE 250 ended 74.51 points higher, 0.4%, at 21,148.50, and the AIM All-Share rose 0.95 of a point, 0.1%, at 759.14. For the week, the FTSE 100 closed down 0.9%, the FTSE 250 ended down 0.1% and the AIM All-Share ended down 0.6%. In European equities on Friday, the CAC 40 in Paris closed up 0.3%, and the DAX 40 in Frankfurt ended 1.3% higher. On Wall Street, markets were mixed at the time of the London close on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.3%, the S&P 500 was down 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.4% lower. The yield on the US 10-year Treasury was quoted at 4.40%, stretched from 4.39%. The yield on the US 30-year Treasury was quoted at 4.91%, widened from 4.89%. Hopes grew on Friday that diplomatic progress could be made towards dialling down the tensions in the Middle East. French president Emmanuel Macron said France and other European powers would make an offer to Iran of a comprehensive diplomatic solution to end the escalating conflict with Israel, AFP reported. French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot will meet Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Geneva 'to make a complete diplomatic and technical offer for negotiations,' Mr Macron told reporters, adding that France and allies Germany and the UK were 'putting a diplomatic solution on the table'. 'Iran must show that it is willing to join the platform for negotiations we are putting on the table,' Mr Macron said. The developments came after US president Donald Trump said he will decide on potential US action against Iran within two weeks. 'Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks,' Mr Trump said in a dictated message, according to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt. Stephen Innes, at SPI Asset Management, said Mr Trump's two-week 'thinking window' on whether to join Israel's war against Iran is 'no cooling-off period – it's a ticking volatility clock'. Ipek Ozkardeskaya, at Swissquote Bank, agreed, stating: 'I'm not sure the US buying itself time can be interpreted as a sign of de-escalation.' Brent oil traded lower at 76.49 US dollars a barrel late on Friday from 78.59 dollars on Thursday. The downward correction saw BP fall 2.0% and Shell drop 0.7%. Also weighing on London's blue-chip index, a drop in drugs firms GSK and AstraZeneca, which ended 2.2% and 1.3% lower. Earlier this week, Mr Trump renewed his threats of tariffs on the sector. Also in the UK, investors weighed a sharp drop in retail sales and assessed public sector borrowing figures. Data from the Office for National Statistics showed UK retail sales fell 2.7% in May from April. This was against a 1.3% rise in April from March and worse than the 0.5% decrease expected by FXStreet-cited market consensus. On an annual basis, retail sales decreased by 1.3% in May, compared with market consensus for a 1.7% increase. Rob Wood, at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said while May's month-to-month fall puts a halt to the rapid rise in retail sales volumes over the start of the year, the underlying upward trend of consumer spending growth will resume in June. He noted surveys show that households have rebuilt their 'rainy day savings and are comfortable with their level of assets. We think this will provide a secure floor for consumer spending.' But Callum McLaren-Stewart, at Citi, thinks the figures constitute 'compelling evidence' of a turn in consumer demand and increases the likelihood of an August interest rate cut. Retail share prices were mostly lower. B&M fell 3.3%, JD Sports fell 0.6%, Next fell 0.2% and Marks & Spencer were down 0.7%. Separate figures from the ONS showed UK Government borrowing, last month, jumped to the highest level for May outside the pandemic era despite a boost to the tax take after the chancellor's national insurance hike. Borrowing surged to £17.69 billion last month, the second highest figure on record for May, surpassed only at the height of Covid, from £16.12 billion a year prior. On-month net borrowing slimmed from £20.05 billion. Borrowing for the first two months of the financial year to date was £37.7 billion, £1.6 billion more than the same two-month period in 2024. Lloyds Bank analysts noted the figure was actually £3 billion below what the Office for Budget Responsibility expected at this point. 'It isn't all good news for the Government though. On a cash basis (central government net cash requirement), the Government has had a requirement of £39.9 billion over April and May and that is £7.4 billion more than the OBR benchmark at this stage,' Lloyds added. The pound was quoted up at 1.3467 US dollars at the time of the London equities close on Friday, compared to 1.3429 dollars on Thursday. The euro stood higher at 1.1521 dollars against 1.1468 dollars. Against the yen, the dollar was trading at 145.89 yen, up compared to 145.65 yen. On the FTSE 100, Berkeley Group fell 8.2% as profit guidance fell short of hopes. The housebuilder expects pretax profit of £450 million for its new financial year. Profit in the following year is 'likely to be similar'. The Cobham, England-based company posted pretax profit of £528.9 million for the financial year ended April 30, down 5.1% from £557.3 million the prior year. Revenue edged up to £2.49 billion from £2.46 billion. 'In terms of guidance, the group is now pointing to PBT (profit before tax) of £450 million in FY26, and a similar level in FY27. We suspect that tougher trading, and increased sales incentives are at the heart of this (guidance),' analysts at Peel Hunt commented. 'Currently, we forecast £475 million and £482 million, implying we need to cut our forecasts by 5-6%.' United Utilities fell 1.7% as RBC Capital Markets downgraded to 'sector perform' from 'outperform' after Thursday's capital markets day. Mulberry fell 11% after announcing a £20 million fundraise and plans to cut costs by £5.9 million as part of a restructuring. The Somerset, England-based, luxury handbag maker said it needed further capital to fund its growth strategy in 'light of an even more challenging trading environment'. Gold was quoted lower at 3,366.36 US dollars an ounce against 3,368.94 dollars. The biggest risers on the FTSE 100 were: Melrose Industries, up 17.9 pence at 517.2p; Standard Chartered, up 26.0p at 1,178.5p; Schroders, up 5.4p at 364.4p; Rentokil, up 5.0p at 350.0p; and Prudential, up 12.0p at 894.2p. The biggest fallers on the FTSE 100 were: Berkeley Group, down 340.0p at 3,810.0p; GSK, down 32.5p at 1,402.5p; BP, down 8.25p at 384.7p; Intertek, down 88.0p at 4,646.0p; and United Utilities, down 19.5p, at 1,124.0p. Monday's global economic calendar has flash composite PMI readings in the UK, eurozone and US plus US existing homes data. There are no significant domestic corporate events scheduled on Monday. Later in the week, Bunzl releases a trading statement and Babcock International reports full-year results.

Sky News reports that the fate of 71 more branches will also depend on negotiating lower rent with landlords. The company, founded in 1948, is working with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on a restructuring plan. Ben Lewis, River Island's chief executive, said: "River Island is a much-loved retailer, with a decades-long history on the British high street. However, the well-documented migration of shoppers from the high street to online has left the business with a large portfolio of stores that is no longer aligned to our customers' needs. "The sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years has only added to the financial burden. We have a clear strategy to transform the business to ensure its long-term viability. "Recent improvements in our fashion offer and in-store shopping experience are already showing very positive results, but it is only with a restructuring plan that we will be able to see this strategy through and secure River Island's future as a profitable retail business. We regret any job losses as a result of store closures, and we will try to keep these to a minimum." River Island employs around 5,500 people. Its annual report in 2023 showed the company made a loss of £33.2million. Its latest report read: "The market for retailing of fashion clothing is fast changing with customer preferences for more diverse, convenient and speedier shopping journeys and with increasing competition especially in the digital space. Article continues below "The key business risks for the group are the pressures of a highly competitive and changing retail environment combined with increased economic uncertainty. A number of geopolitical events have resulted in continuing supply chain disruption as well as energy, labour and food price increases, driving inflation and interest rates higher and resulting in weaker disposable income and lower consumer confidence." The retailer was founded under the Lewis and Chelsea Girl brand before being renamed in the 1980s. The proposals are set to go to a vote by the firm's creditors – companies or individuals owed money by the retailer – in August. The deal is expected to result in fresh funding being invested into the business in order to help fuel its turnaround. It is among high street fashion chains to have been impacted by weaker consumer spending and competition from cheaper online rivals, such as Shein.
