Keonjhar/Bhubaneswar: Four men were arrested on Thursday for the alleged gang rape and murder of a 17-year-old Plus II student in Keonjhar district, two days after her body was found hanging from a tree.
"Based on the complaint of the deceased girl's father and prima facie evidence, we arrested all the four accused on charges of gang rape and murder," SP Nitin Kusalkar said.
The incident comes days after the gang rape of a college student on Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district drew widespread condemnation with CM Mohan Charan Majhi calling for strict action against the perpetrators.
Police have collected DNA samples from the suspects for profiling and comparison with the deceased's samples, Kusalkar said.
Police sources said one of the accused, aged 19, was in a relationship with the minor for about a month.
"The girl's father found her body hanging from a tree behind their residence on Tuesday morning. In his FIR, he identified the 19-year-old as the primary accused, who allegedly committed the assault with three accomplices aged 19, 27 and 42. All are residents of Keonjhar district," the SP added.
Police sources said the father, in his complaint, claimed the accused murdered her and made it look like a suicide by hanging her body.
"We are awaiting the post-mortem report that will ascertain the exact cause of death," Kusalkar said.
Another police officer said while the primary accused had sexually abused the victim, the other three suspects aided in the offence. "All three accomplices would face gang-rape charges under the new criminal laws, even if they had not sexually assaulted her," the officer said.
On Thursday, separate teams of BJD and Congress members visited the girl's village and met her family members.

Allegations, suspensions and a govt under fire

The stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 during RCB's first IPL victory parade has spiralled into a political and administrative quagmire. Claiming 11 lives and injuring over 50, the incident has exposed glaring failures in crowd management and safety protocols. Activist T J Abraham has levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, and the Karnataka government's response, marked by hasty suspensions of IPS officers and a delayed report to the Centre, raises questions about accountability and competence. Documents reveal that Bengaluru police had flagged concerns about insufficient preparation time, yet the event proceeded with gates allegedly kept closed on DyCM Shivakumar's orders to create a spectacle. This decision, coupled with last-minute event scheduling, set the stage for a deadly crush. Activist T J Abraham's complaint, filed at Cubbon Park Police Station, names 14 individuals, including Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar, and Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. Abraham accuses Shivakumar of leveraging the event for personal gain, alleging negotiations to acquire an RCB stake and planning unsafe festivities. The closed gates, he claims, were a deliberate move to amplify the crowd's fervour, directly contributing to the stampede. Rajneesh faces charges of misusing public funds for publicity, while Siddaramaiah's oversight as CM is questioned. A second complaint by activist Snehamayi Krishna echoes these sentiments, intensifying pressure on the Congress-led government. The Opposition BJP has demanded resignations and labelled the incident a result of 'utter mismanagement.' On June 5, the Karnataka government hastily suspended five top police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand, ACP (West) Vikas Kumar, and DCP (Central Division) Shekhar. The stated reason was 'dereliction of duty'. However, this move smacks of scapegoating according to netizens. Police had warned of logistical challenges, yet the suspensions target lower-tier officials while sparing political leaders implicated in decision-making. Vikas Kumar has challenged his suspension at the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), arguing it overlooks systemic issues. In a bid to restore public trust, the Karnataka government has drafted the Karnataka Crowd Control (Managing Crowd at Events and Venues of Mass Gathering) Bill, 2025. The proposed legislation imposes up to three years in jail and Rs 5 lakh fines on commercial organisers, with lighter penalties for non-commercial ones, for safety violations. Compensation provisions, recoverable as land revenue if unpaid, aim to hold organisers accountable.

Land dispute case: Telangana HC reserves order on A Revanth's plea to quash 2016 FIR; order reserved till July 18

HYDERABAD: Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya of the Telangana high court on Friday reserved orders to July 18 on a plea filed by former Congress MP and chief minister A Revanth Reddy seeking quashing of a 2016 FIR registered against him at the Gachibowli police station. The case was filed based on a complaint by N Peddi Raju, president of the Razole Constituency SC Cooperative Housing Society, alleging trespass and caste-based abuse during a land dispute in Gopanapalli, Rangareddy district. The matter is pending before a special court under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. According to the FIR, Peddi Raju claimed Revanth's brother Kondal Reddy and one E Laxmaiah forcibly entered around two acres of land claimed by the society, demolished a compound wall and other structures, and abused him in the name of caste-allegedly at Revanth's behest. The 2019 chargesheet noted that though Raju claimed purchase of land for the society, the sellers lacked clear title. Meanwhile, Kondal Reddy claimed to have purchased 31 acres in the same survey number in 2005, registered in his name. The chargesheet concluded that the accused trespassed into land in possession of the society and carried out the demolition. Counsel Nimma Narayana, appearing for Peddi Raju, argued: "Though the chargesheet was filed five years ago, charges have not been framed, and crucial provisions under the Atrocities Act were left out." He reiterated that Kondal Reddy used caste abuse, allegedly on Revanth's instructions. The judge reserved her orders and posted the case to July 18.

Probe launched after death threat to Himachal deputy CM, Cong MLA

The Himachal Pradesh Police have launched an investigation into the alleged 'indirect' threats to deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri and Congress MLA Rakesh Kalia, through social media, officials said on Friday. An FIR has been registered in this matter in Una's Haroli police station on the complaint of a local. According to the police, a complaint was received at the Haroli police station on Thursday, alleging that a threat was issued to the deputy chief minister and Gagret MLA through a social networking site. According to police, a social media user shared a post on the arrest of notorious gangster Amrish Rana. In the comment section, an individual wrote, 'The public is demanding the sword again,' to which another user replied, 'This time it will be used on a politician only.' When asked, 'For what crime?', the individual said, 'Only the deputy CM and MLA Rakesh Kalia would know.' Taking note of the conversation, a complainant informed the police. Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under section 351 (3) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation is underway. Una superintendent of police (SP) Amit Yadav said, 'The death threat was received through Facebook and we have registered an FIR. The accused person, who hails from Mandi, has been detained, and is under police custody.'
