Eco-Shop positive about performance despite price hike

KUALA LUMPUR: Household retailer Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd remains optimistic about its performance despite hiking up product prices to RM2.60 from RM2.40 last month.
Its chief financial officer Chong Yew Kai said the company raised prices to RM2.40 from RM2.20 in 2022 and saw no negative market reaction.
"I see no changes in company performance (after the price increase), it was as per our expectation. So, we are not seeing any different kind of market reaction.
"Of course, (we are in) a transition period (now). Moving forward, we are looking at a very strong performance," he told a press conference after today's listing.
Recently, Eco-Shop posted a higher net profit of RM61.72 million for the third quarter of its financial year ending Feb 28, 2025 (3Q FY2025), compared to RM42.57 million in the same period a year ago.
The revenue increased 17.2 per cent to RM736.35 million in 3Q FY2025 from RM628.41 million previously, driven by the expansion of the group's store network with the opening of 26 new outlets, bringing the total number of stores to 349 in 3Q FY2025 from 278 in 3Q FY2024.
Meanwhile, Eco-Shop chief executive officer and executive director Jessica Ng said the company would evaluate their opportunities to venture into the ASEAN market in the future, as the dollar shop segment in the region is still new.
Dollar shops offer a wide range of products at fixed, low prices and typically carry daily items like household goods, snacks, and personal care products, and may also include items like stationery and hardware.
However, she said the group would likely focus their business expansion in Malaysia for now, so that more Malaysians would have access to affordable products.
As of today, Eco-Shop has 358 stores in Malaysia, comprising 336 Eco-Shop stores and 22 Eco-Plus stores.
Today, Eco-Shop debuted on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia at RM1.25, a premium of 12 sen from its initial public offering (IPO) price of RM1.13, with 25 million shares traded.
Under its listing exercise, the company had raised RM419.87 million, where RM200 million or 51 per cent would be utilised for distribution centre expansion, RM56.27 million (14.4 per cent) for new store opening, and RM8.52 million (2.2 per cent) for IT hardware and software.
"RM100 million or 25.5 per cent would be utilised to repay bank borrowings, and RM27.32 million (7.0 per cent) for IPO and listing expenses," it said.
At 5 pm, Eco-Shop closed the day trading at RM1.20, seven sen higher than its issue price of RM1.13, with the company also emerging as the most active stock for the day with 209.16 million shares changing hands.

Ziebart Celebrates Two Remarkable Dads as Winners of "Detail for Dad" Father's Day Contest

Aftermarket Automotive Brand Recognizes Michael Gray and Bob P. with Complimentary Detailing and Inner-Guard® Plus Packages TROY, Mich., June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — This Father's Day, Ziebart, the brand fondly known as the 'dad of the automotive industry,' is putting the spotlight on two incredible fathers: Michael Gray of Magnolia, Illinois, and Bob P. of the Rochester, New York area. These two men were selected as winners of Ziebart's first-ever 'Detail for Dad' contest, receiving a full Interior and Exterior Detailing package complete with Inner-Guard® Plus – a deluxe service designed to keep vehicles looking showroom-new, inside and out About the ContestLaunched in May to recognize dads who go above and beyond, Ziebart's first-ever 'Detail for Dad' contest invited participants to submit short essays explaining why their dad or father-figure deserved the ultimate car makeover. More than 200 dads were submitted for consideration, with entries celebrating fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and even fathers nominating their own sons. Entries were evaluated on creativity, sincerity, and heart. 'Dads are often the unsung heroes who quietly give their all to their families, including their vehicles, which usually take the brunt of everyday life,' said Thomas A. Wolfe, President & Chief Executive Officer of Ziebart. 'We created this contest as a way to give back and show appreciation for the love, effort, and sacrifice these men demonstrate every day. Michael and Bob exemplify everything this contest was meant to celebrate.' Meet the WinnersNominated by his daughter Rachel, Michael Gray is a single father who stepped into both parenting roles when Rachel was just 3 years old. She describes her dad as someone who always puts his family first even if that means his own needs, and his truck, come last. Rachel writes: 'He is always putting his kids' needs first before his own. Unfortunately, that puts him last on his own list. I wanted to nominate the best Dad ever because his truck is an all-around family truck. Therefore, it is literally used for everything.' From chauffeuring their four pets to the vet, to taking kids bargain hunting, and of course, sharing life lessons wrapped in humor, Rachel says her dad has done it all from the seat of that truck, which is now set for an overdue makeover. Bob P., nominated by his daughter Paige, is a nearly 80-year-old disabled Vietnam combat veteran and a retired longtime educator with an inspiring do-it-yourself spirit, particularly when it comes to anything related to construction or car maintenance. Paige writes: 'I think my dad Bob deserves a clean car due to his ability to still do amazing things at an advanced age! … He is currently building a house for my mom and his truck is a disaster of Lowe's debris.' The winners each receive a complimentary Ziebart Interior and Exterior Detailing, complete with Inner-Guard® Plus a prize valued at $629.97, that aims to bring even the messiest 'dad mobile' back to life. Both Michael and Bob will be receiving their automotive makeovers in the coming weeks, with appointments currently being scheduled at their nearest Ziebart locations. Malaysia-European Free Trade Association partnership agreement could negatively impact many sectors, says CAP

PETALING JAYA: The proposed Malaysia-European Free Trade Association (Efta) Economic Partnership Agreement (Meepa) could have far-reaching consequences for public health, access to seeds, and farmers' rights, says the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP). Health policy advisor Dr Lim Chee Han stated that the leaked intellectual property (IP) annexe of the deal contains 'TRIPS-plus' provisions—rules that exceed the requirements under the World Trade Organisation's Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). These provisions, he explained, could lead to extended patent monopolies, restrict the government's ability to introduce affordable generic medicines, and increase the cost of essential drugs. 'Agreeing to TRIPS-plus measures ties the hands of our government. It restricts our ability to respond to public health needs and will drive up the cost of medicines, affecting access for patients who need life-saving treatment,' he said during the press conference on Friday (June 13). Lim also warned that the agreement would impact the country's food security and farmers' livelihoods. 'The provisions would undermine existing protections in our national laws that allow farmers to save, reuse, exchange, and sell their seeds. This threatens our local farming practices and long-term food sovereignty,' he said. He emphasised that Malaysia, as a net importer of intellectual property, stands to lose more than it gains. 'Efta countries, including Switzerland and Norway, represent a small market compared to Malaysia. Yet we are being asked to give up a lot, especially when the total population of Efta is less than half of ours,' he added. Lim urged the government not to rush into signing the deal and called for transparency in the negotiation process. 'The full text of Meepa must be released for public consultation and parliamentary scrutiny. We must retain our right to regulate in the public interest, especially in areas as vital as health and agriculture,' he said. Additionally, the group has submitted the memorandum to the Prime Minister's Department, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, and the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry.

PLUS, Yinson GreenTech to develop EV charging, retail hub at Seremban R&R

KUALA LUMPUR: PLUS Malaysia Bhd, in partnership with Yinson GreenTech Malaysia, will develop the country's first electric vehicle (EV) charging and retail hub at the Seremban Rest and Service Area (Southbound), with completion targeted by 2027. The project follows a joint venture agreement between Terra PLUS Sdn Bhd (a subsidiary of PLUS) and Green EV Charge Sdn Bhd (a unit under Yinson GreenTech) to design, build, and manage EV charging hubs at strategic points along the North-South Expressway (NSE). In a joint statement, both parties said the first development will be at the Seremban R&R, marking a significant milestone in transforming highways into future-ready destinations that meet the evolving needs of EV users. "Through the joint venture, PLUS will lead the development and management of the Hub's commercial retail and food and beverages (F&B) components to elevate the overall user experience, whilst Yinson GreenTech will be responsible for the installation, operation, and management of EV chargers," it said. PLUS managing director Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said this collaboration marks a strategic milestone in supporting the national Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2030 (LCMB). "This will also support our aspirations towards a sustainable and smart highway for an enhanced travel experience for our highway customers," said Nik Airina. The hubs will accelerate Malaysia's ambition of achieving a net zero emissions target by 2050, as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap and play an important role in strengthening the nation's EV infrastructure, contributing towards a reliable corridor along key travel routes. The Seremban R&R EV hub will be the first of such hubs along the NSE and is expected to be ready by 2027. To date, 112 DC fast charging points have been energised on PLUS highways, exceeding the 2025 target. In addition, Yinson GreenTech chief executive officer Lim Chern Yuan said the hubs that they are developing aim to resolve the current challenges faced by EV drivers. "With high-speed and dependable chargers deployed at critical locations nationwide, we are helping alleviate range anxiety and remove the barrier to EV adoption.
