New Holland rewards dedicated Narrogin apprentice, Darcy Bryant-Smith, with Perth Super 440 experience
A Narrogin apprentice's dreams came true at Perth Super 440 at the weekend after his dedication to the industry was rewarded by New Holland, Red Bull Ampol Racing's team sponsor.
Darcy Bryant-Smith's spent the weekend trackside with the Red Bull Ampol Racing pit crew as a passenger to the podium-team, an experience he described as 'memorable'.
The apprentice service technician said he never expected to be afforded the 'once-in-a-lifetime' experience.
'By far the highlight form this weekend has been getting in the car and seeing what the drivers can do from the passenger seat,' he said.
'I spent the experience mostly supporting the tyre team to keep the pitstop stops short. I also did a bit with the specialised cooling fan mechanics to ensure that the engines didn't overheat and that they were performing.
'Both of the drivers podiumed over the weekend, so it was a memorable experience being a part of their overall win.'
Mr Bryant-Smith spent many weekends with his family watching Bathurst 1000 which helped foster his dream to work with engines, identifying faults and getting the vehicles back on the road.
Following his love for cars, he completed a Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology while attending a local agriculture college before moving to a heavy diesel agricultural apprenticeship at the McIntosh Training Academy.
Today Mr Bryant-Smith works on big diesel engines, hydraulics, and powertrains on agricultural machinery from combine harvesters, tractors, balers, and telehandlers to general farm equipment at McIntosh & Son Narrogin.
'Although I knew this kind of field existed, I didn't think I would be working on agricultural machinery every day and helping farmers remain operational,' he said.
McIntosh & Son Narrogin service manager Byron Blevin said Darcy had already proven himself to be an invaluable asset to the team, despite only being a second-year heavy diesel agricultural apprentice.
'Darcy's wealth of knowledge is truly remarkable for someone of his age and experience,' he said.
'It's not uncommon for more qualified team members to seek Darcy's input and advice as his knowledge and problem-solving skills often surpass those of many with far more years of experience.'
Mr Blevin said one of Mr Bryant-Smith's most impressive recent achievements was his successful completion of a complicated differential rebuild, which he executed in an 'exceptionally efficient time frame'.
'This task required a high level of skill, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of complex mechanical systems — qualities that Darcy displayed in abundance,' he said.
'His ability to complete such intricate work with speed and precision speaks volumes about his capabilities and work ethic.'
New Holland has awarded five other apprentice service technicians across Australia and New Zealand this year.
The reward program serves as part of their continued efforts to attract young talent into the agriculture industry.
CNH national parts and service manager Gary Pertot said the industry's biggest issue is trying to attract quality technicians and apprentices.
'Our program is about challenging perceptions that agriculture is a low-tech or uninteresting career,' he said.
'Modern agriculture is about complex technologies — CVT transmissions, precision farming tools, and advanced engineering.
'We are showing school leavers, young people or those looking to reskill that a career in agriculture is a chance to be at the forefront of technological innovation that feeds the nation.'

Supercars Darwin: Barry Ryan's frank verdict on fall of Erebus
Don't miss out on the headlines from Motorsport. Followed categories will be added to My News. Erebus chief executive Barry Ryan has offered a frank reflection on a crippling 18 months that has seen his title-winning team slip to last in the Supercars standings. After a fairytale start to the Gen3 era, which saw Erebus win both the drivers' and teams' titles in 2023, the squad has endured a string of well-publicised internal struggles. Will Brown defected to Triple Eight at the end of 2023, while reigning champion Brodie Kostecki missed the start of the 2024 season while in dispute with the team, which coincided with big name sponsors such as Coca-Cola walking away. Kostecki would later return and win the Bathurst 1000, however left to Dick Johnson Racing at the end of last season – along with both Erebus race engineers George Commins and Tom Moore. Will Brown left Erebus at the end of 2023. Picture: Brendan Radke Brodie Kostecki was another high-profile departure. Team principal Brad Tremain also left the squad at the end of 2024 with plans to pursue an opportunity in IndyCar in the US. That has prompted a significant, and ongoing, internal rebuild, highlighted by Ryan himself needing to take the race engineer role on Jack Le Brocq's car. It's been tough going for Le Brocq and rookie teammate Cooper Murray, too, with Erebus slumping to last in the teams' standings ahead of this weekend's Darwin Triple Crown. 'There's no hiding behind it; the last 18 months have been really hard on our team. Really hard,' said Ryan at Hidden Valley on Friday. 'Losing key people … our last rebuild was 2021 and we got Brodie and Will and no one believed, really, in that. And we won a championship two years later, and we won Bathurst the year after. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY 'We've gone back to where we were [in 2021]. 'It's hard on the team. To replace people like George, Tom and Brodie is really hard. Brad Tremain is going to kick goals in America. That's four key people out of the team, it's really tough to replace that. 'It's going to take time. We can't hide behind that. I can only do so much and the boys that I've had there for six, seven years can only do so much. 'Unfortunately I'm still race engineering, and I say that because I shouldn't be. I should be running the business. But until we can get the right person to do that role; we're trying to self-promote from within, we're trying to find an engineer we can just put in and be really successful. Cooper Murray was 11th in the second practice session in Darwin. 'It's a balancing act and I can't say I'm really enjoying it. We got to a point where we were beating Triple Eight and we wanted to be that team that was the best year in, year out. 'Massive respect to Roland Dane for what he did for that whole time he was there, and what they're still doing. We got there and we just couldn't keep the momentum. 'No matter what everyone thinks the reason is why. We just couldn't keep that momentum that teams like that can do. 'Anyway, it's a lesson learned, this whole situation. We'll try not to go through it again. 'We'll get there again. We're confident in our team. We've got a great bunch of loyal staff that want to stay on and want to see us get there again and win championships and Bathursts. 'We're still going to go to Bathurst trying to win there this year. We'll have the belief and we'll have the drivers than can do it.' Erebus showed signs of improvement on track on Friday, with Murray 11th in the second practice session and Le Brocq in 19th as Andre Heimgartner led the way for Brad Jones Racing ahead of Ryan Wood and Will Brown. Trainer Matt Smith saddles up Millie De Lune at Randwick
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Trainer Matt Smith could be willing to contemplate a late Queensland winter carnival raid if Millie De Lune can put together back-to-back Royal Randwick victories this Saturday. Smith has the Group 3 $300,000 Winx Guineas (1600m) in the back of his mind for his progressive daughter of Puissance De Lune as she prepares to tackle the Elite Sand & Soil Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m). •PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Millie De Lune has shown an abundance of potential this preparation with two victories in five starts and scored her biggest win to date last time with a dominant win over 2000m on soft ground in town. 'She is going really good and has progressed nicely since that last run,' Smith said. 'We have tried her a couple of times on better ground and she doesn't like it much … she might be a bit better in time but I thought she would make a reasonable nice staying filly and have always thought that. 'She has taken time to come around.' • EXPERT TIPS: Clinton Payne's race-by-race tips and analysis for Randwick on Saturday Saturday's run will determine if Smith puts Millie De Lune over more ground again or drops her back to a mile for the Queensland stakes assignment. The emerging three-year-old will already be dropping back a furlong from her last-start win when she lines up on Saturday. 'She was really strong late the other day so if we get tempo she will be fine with the drop back in trip but if not, it might be tricky from the barrier (12) as well,' Smith said. 'It's always a concern coming back in trip.' Ashley Morgan pilots Millie De Lune, which is a $3.70 favourite to continue her winning ways. Millie De Lune is well fancied at Randwick on Saturday. Picture: Jeremy Ng / Getty Images • Lipp out to fulfil $40m Lotto winner's spring carnival dream Smith is also in the hunt for the Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) in which Astero ($34) links up with Andrew Adkins. But Astero will need to do something he's never done in 13 attempts – win at Randwick. 'I don't know why Randwick doesn't suit him,' Smith said. 'I think at Rosehill, it suits a horse that wants a bit more speed. 'The other day he was pulling behind them and he runs his best races when he is not right up on the bridle that much. 'But he hasn't been beaten that far and his three runs this time have been better than they look.' Smith also has Time Quest ($101) as the fifth emergency. Labuschagne axed as Konstas and Inglis to face West Indies
Steve Smith has been officially ruled out of Australia's first Test against the West Indies in Barbados, as selectors swing the axe on underperforming batter Marnus Labuschagne. Smith is still recovering from the finger injury he sustained during the World Test Championship final against South Africa and will be assessed again ahead of the second Test in Grenada. However, in major news five days out from the first Test in Bridgetown, selectors have confirmed that Labuschagne will be dropped from Australia's XI. The No.3 hasn't made a century in his past 30 innings. Chair of selectors George Bailey confirmed Josh Inglis and Sam Konstas would replace Smith and Labuschagne in the XI for the series opener starting June 25 at Kensington Oval. 'Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that,' Bailey said. 'We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers. 'In his only opportunity in Test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition. 'Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects.
