Navy's Ed DeChellis retires after 29 seasons as a head coach

Reuters19-03-2025

March 19 - Navy coach Ed DeChellis announced his retirement on Wednesday after coaching 426 games over 14 seasons at the Academy.
DeChellis, 66, surpassed Ben Carnevale (417) for most games coached at the school earlier this season. He went 196-230 at Navy, including 15-19 this season.
"It has been a great honor to serve at the Naval Academy and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach so many exceptional young men," DeChellis said in the news release. "I would like to thank (athletic director) Chet Gladchuk for giving me that opportunity 14 years ago and for his support and extraordinary leadership during my tenure.
"The Naval Academy represents a set of timeless values that form the bedrock of our nation. I am proud to have played a small role in advancing those values through sport. I owe a debt of gratitude to all of the players that placed their trust in me and to the talented coaches and other staff members that worked alongside me to help each of our players reach their full potential on and off the court."
DeChellis also coached East Tennessee State (1996-2003) and Penn State (2003-2011) prior to this stint at Navy. Both those schools made the NCAA Tournament in his final season as coach. In 2009, he guided Penn State to the NIT title.
Overall, DeChellis had a 415-461 record and topped 100 wins at each of the schools he coached.
DeChellis' streak of 29 consecutive seasons as head coach is the sixth-longest in NCAA Division I history, trailing Rick Barnes (38 seasons), Dana Altman (36), Bill Self (32), Tom Izzo (30) and Steve Alford (30).
Associate coach Jon Perry was named interim coach. Navy said it will conduct a national search for a new coach.

Arkansas vs Murray State baseball highlights: Gage Wood completes no-hitter

Ultimately, Wood still made history. He threw the first College World Series no-hitter since 1960 and struck out a ridiculous 19 Racer hitters, all while living in the mid-to-high 90s for Arkansas. The gem was needed. Arkansas' potent offense was held in check by Isaac Silva, who allowed just one run and fanned seven of his own in six innings. Graham Kelham allowed two runs, resulting in a 3-0 win for Arkansas. The College World Series has seen the likes of Paul Skenes, Kumar Rocker, and Gerrit Cole. None of them managed to make lineups look as overmatched as Wood made Murray State look throughout the day. Ultimately, the result is that Arkansas lives to fight another day in the College World Series. But in the long run, Wood's performance is going to be remembered in the annals of College World Series history no matter how far Dave Van Horn's program goes this season. Arkansas will now play the loser of UCLA-LSU on June 17, as it looks for the first title in program history. USA TODAY Sports followed the game live. Catch up on Wood's historic performance below. UCLA, Penn State deny reports of private equity funding from Elevate

June 9 - UCLA and Penn State have denied a report Monday by Sportico that they have partnered with consulting firm Elevate to receive funding from its $500 million College Investment Initiative. Elevate formally announced the initiative earlier Monday and told news outlets that two schools had signed up with the project. However, UCLA and Penn State officials each denied Sportico's reporting that they have engaged with the new fund. Both schools said they're partnered with Elevate for ticketing operations but not for private equity. The College Investment Initiative is backed by Velocity Capital Management and the Texas Permanent School Fund. The idea behind the initiative is to offer capital to schools for revenue-generating projects -- like NIL platforms or athletic venue upgrades. Boise State athletic director Jeramiah Dickey told Front Office Sports that his university is "actively considering" private equity and hopes to have a deal set within the next six months. --Field Level Media

Michael Earley to be retained as Aggies' head baseball coach

May 31 - Texas A&M Director of Athletics Trev Alberts announced today that first-year head baseball coach Michael Earley would return to College Station for the 2025-26 academic year. "Earlier today, I met with Coach Earley to discuss the state of our baseball program. I appreciate Mike's work in taking a holistic view of what changes need to be made so that we have a baseball program that meets our high standards," Alberts said. "Baseball success is critically important to Texas A&M. I am confident in Mike's ability to execute the needed change and fully support his vision going forward." Earley took over for Jim Schlossnagle, who guided the Aggies to a pair of College World Series appearances in his three seasons at the helm. In 2024, Texas A&M made it to the championship finals, but fell in three games (2-1) to national champion Tennessee. Schlossnagle took the University of Texas head coaching position one day after the decisive third game and Earley, the program's hitting coach, was elevated to the top spot in the dugout. Texas A&M was the consensus No. 1 pick in the preseason, but struggled to a 30-26 record, which included a 11-19 mark and 14th place finish in the SEC. The Aggies failed to earn an NCAA Tournament bid for just the second time since 2007. The nucleus of the team is expected to return, but Alberts did not address the statuses of hitting coach Caleb Longley and pitching coach Jason Kelly. --Field Level Media
