PETALING JAYA : Women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah cruised into the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open after a convincing win over Japan's Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi in straight games in Jakarta today.
The Malaysian world No 4 pair won the first game easily but had to work hard in the second before defeating the fifth ranked Japanese duo 21-6, 21-18 in 36 minutes at Istora Senayan.
It was their fourth win over the Japanese duo in six encounters.
Pearly-Thinaah will meet Chinese pair Li Yi Jing-Luo Xi Min who beat Japan's Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto in another quarter-final.
Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also booked their place in the semi-finals after defeating India's top pair in straight games.
The world No 7 pair, who won the Malaysia Masters last month, defeated Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy 21-19, 21-16 in a match lasting 43 minutes.
They will face either compatriots Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani or Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Reza Pahlevi Isfahani from Indonesia next.
It was Wei Chong-Kai Wun's first win over the 22nd ranked Indian pair in their five encounters, and their third semi-final appearance this season.
They hope to repeat their performance at the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta in January, when they clinched the title. They also won the Malaysia Masters last month after defeating compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the final.

KUALA LUMPUR: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have transformed themselves into a lethal attacking pair after realising that defence and patience alone will not win them titles. This was evident in their last four tournaments where the world No. 3's new approach has brought considerable success as they won the Thailand Open last month and finished second in the Indonesia Open two weeks ago. They also reached the Malaysia Masters semi-finals and Singapore Open quarter-finals. "Defence alone is not enough so, we needed to be good in attacking to be an all-round pair," said Pearly during a sponsorship signing ceremony as a VitaHealth ambassador in Kuala Lumpur today. "Thinaah can now play a lot more as a baseline player and this has improved our variation. "The last four tournaments have given us a lot of confidence but more importantly, our communication on court is better and we are also varying our style of play." Pearly's performances in the Thailand and Indonesia Opens were recognised by VitaHealth as she received RM15,000 for her efforts. "I'm very happy with the support from VitaHealth since 2023 and the incentive is a big motivation for me to continue progressing in my career," added Pearly after signing a new two-year contract as its ambassador.

Indonesia outplay Malaysia for Billie Jean King Cup promotion
KUALA LUMPUR: Promotion once again eluded Malaysia but the national women's tennis squad can still be proud to replicate their top-four finish from last season in the Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) Asia-Oceania Group II competition this year. Malaysia lost 2-0 in their promotional playoff against Indonesia at the National Tennis centre here today (June 21). Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman succumbed to a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Anjali Kirana Junarto in the opening singles. Joleen Saw had Malaysian fans on the edge of their seats as she pushed Mishka Sinclaire Goenardi hard before going down 6-7 (8), 6-1, 6-4. Mongolia will join Indonesia in the Group I competition next year as they defeated Philippines 2-0 in the other promotional playoff. Malaysia had finished second behind Mongolia in group A earlier this week to qualify for the promotional playoff, which was essentially the semi-finals. A total of 10 teams competed in Group II this season. Joleen, who was reduced to tears after losing her match against Indonesia, was nevertheless proud of the team's efforts this year. "I tried my best but at the end of the day she (Mishka) made the better shots and played really well," said a visibly dejected Joleen. "The atmosphere was incredible today and I really appreciate the support we got from our home crowd. "Unfortunately we could not get the result we wanted. It is a bit disappointing, there was not much I could do. "Overall, I think we had a better chance (at promotion) than last year and our performances were quite okay. "I will continue to keep working hard to improve my game - especially my serve and footwork - and hopefully I can play again next year if I am on semester break." Joleen, 18, is set to join the University of Pennsylvania later this year where she will both study and play collegiate tennis. The national squad finished third in the Group II competition last year - Malaysia's best-ever performance in the history of the competition - when it featured a different two-phase, round robin format. There was no playoff for third place this season.

No more mall training: Road to Gold panel to secure private venues for pro shuttlers, says Hannah Yeoh
PUTRAJAYA, June 21 — The Road to Gold (RTG) Committee will help professional badminton players under its programme find more conducive training venues, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. She said the RTG Committee is aware that these players are currently training in halls which are also open to the public. 'I hope we can help find more suitable and private training locations for professional athletes (badminton players). 'As it stands, they've been training in places like shopping malls where the public can watch them. I believe RTG Programme coordinator Datuk Stuart Ramalingam will coordinate the necessary support,' she said. She told reporters this after opening the Asean Persons With Disabilities in Sports Conference 2025 here today. Hannah, who also chairs the RTG Committee, said efforts will also be made to help professional players find quality sparring partners to boost their performance. Last Thursday, she announced that four professional badminton players — men's world number one pair Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai Jemie — had committed to the RTG programme for the 2025 cycle. The RTG project, introduced by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) in April 2023, is a national initiative to coordinate Malaysia's efforts to win its first Olympic gold medal, with focus on the Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 Games. Meanwhile, Hannah expressed hope that the contract issue involving national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, whose deal with the Badminton Association of Malaysia ended last December, can be resolved promptly.
