
Russia plans to integrate homegrown AI model into space station
MOSCOW, June 3 (Reuters) - Russia plans to integrate its homegrown Gigachat artificial intelligence model into IT systems on the International Space Station (ISS), the head of space agency Roscosmos said on Tuesday.
Gigachat, developed by the country's largest bank, Sberbank, is one of Russia's two flagship large language models (LLM) as it tries to catch up with the United States and China in the global AI race.
Roscosmos chief Dmitry Bakanov said that the next mission to the ISS this autumn will deliver everything needed for the model to function. Gigachat will assist the crew with processing satellite imagery, increasing the maximum resolution from one meter per pixel to 0.5 meters.
"This is a direct assistance for the cosmonauts," Bakanov told a technology conference in Moscow.
In April, a Russian spacecraft delivered American astronaut Jonathan Kim and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexei Zubritsky to the ISS. The next Russian spacecraft mission to the ISS is planned for November 27.
Russia has announced it will participate in the ISS until 2028 and plans to launch the first two modules of its own new space station in 2027.
Sberbank is focusing on developing AI agents - goal-directed generative AI systems designed to process information, make decisions and take actions without direct, constant human input.

The head of Ukraine 's security services (SBU) today revealed more details about a plot to assassinate Volodymyr Zelensky at an airport in Poland. SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk told reporters at a press conference in Kyiv that a Polish military veteran named Pawel K. was working with Russia's military intelligence services on a plot to murder Zelensky at Rzeszow Airport last year. Polish prosecutors previously said the man, now a pensioner, was arrested in April 2024 based on tip-offs from Ukrainian intelligence that he had been recruited by Russia. He had reportedly planned to pass information about airport security to his Russian handlers. But Malyuk today gave more information about the case, claiming the Pole had been 'activated' by Russia's intelligence agencies and was set to take a shot at Zelensky with a sniper rifle. He had also explored the possibility of using a first-person-view (FPV) drone to target the Ukrainian leader, Malyuk said. The details, first reported by RBC Ukraine, emerged hours after Zelensky boarded his presidential jet at Rzeszow Airport and headed for London where he met with King Charles earlier today. Polish authorities in May indicted Pawel K. for his role in the assassination plot. He is awaiting trial and faces up to eight years in prison, according to prosecutors. Rzeszow Airport was not a significant location for air traffic prior to Russia's full-scale invasion, but quickly became a central hub for the provision of aid to Ukraine, and as a departure airport for Ukrainian officials taking part in foreign delegations. In March 2023, a group of foreign citizens were arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia in the vicinity of the airport, Polish government officials said. Polish security services reportedly broke up the spy network accused of installing secret cameras at Rzeszow to film the transport infrastructure used to deliver aid to Ukraine. The group also allegedly installed dozens of cameras near railway junctions and key transport routes in areas close to the Ukrainian border, which lies some 75km from Rzeszow.

June 23 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs (GS.N), opens new tab on Monday announced a firmwide launch of an artificial intelligence assistant, a tool driven by generative AI, to boost productivity, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. Around 10,000 employees at the bank are already using the GS AI Assistant, the memo sent to staff by Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti showed. With the AI tool's official company-wide launch, Goldman joins a long list of big banks already leveraging the technology to shape their operations in a targeted manner and help employees in day-to-day tasks. Citigroup (C.N), opens new tab has AI tools such as Citi Assist, which searches internal bank policies and procedures, as well as Citi Stylus, which helps with document summarizing and comparisons. Morgan Stanley (MS.N), opens new tab has a chatbot that helps financial advisors in interactions with clients, while Bank of America's (BAC.N), opens new tab virtual assistant, Erica, focuses on day-to-day transactions of retail clients. The GS AI assistant will help Goldman employees in "summarizing complex documents and drafting initial content to performing data analysis," according to the internal memo.

Rubin Observatory, located on a mountaintop in Chile, was built to take a deeper look at the night sky, covering hidden corners. Funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy, it will survey the southern sky for the next 10 years. The observatory's first look features the vibrant Trifid and Lagoon nebulas located thousands of light-years from Earth. A light-year is nearly 6 trillion miles. A gaggle of galaxies known as the Virgo Cluster were also captured, including two bright blue spirals. The observatory hopes to image 20 billion galaxies and discover new asteroids and other celestial objects. The effort is named after astronomer Vera Rubin, who offered the first tantalizing evidence that a mysterious force called dark matter might be lurking in the universe.
