UPSI Bus Crash Driver Had 18 Outstanding Traffic Violations
PETALING JAYA: The driver of the bus involved in the tragic accident that killed 15 students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) in Gerik yesterday had accumulated a notable record of 18 traffic summonses, according to authorities.
Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, the Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director, told New Straits Times that checks on the driver's history indicated 13 of these infractions were for speeding.
Other offenses included one accident-related summons, three for failing to wear a seatbelt, and one for a defective third brake light.
Further investigation into the vehicle itself unearthed an additional 21 traffic summonses associated with the bus. While five of these remain under active investigation, the others have reportedly been settled through the courts.
The bus was transporting 42 UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, yesterday to their university campus in Tanjung Malim when it was involved in a collision with a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway.
The devastating incident claimed the lives of 13 students at the scene, with two more pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
An additional 28 students sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The bus driver, Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, who is currently receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital, has reportedly extended an apology to the families of the victims and the injured students.
He attributed the crash to a sudden and unexpected failure of the vehicle's brakes, claiming the air system also malfunctioned.

BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is in the final stages of completing investigation papers to prosecute the operator of the bus company involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on June 9. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said it was preparing two investigation papers, one involving the bus operating company and the other involving the company that leased the bus. "At the moment, the investigation is in its final phase, and the papers are expected to be handed over to the prosecution soon, likely within a month," he told reporters after the MyLesen B2 Driving Licence handover ceremony at the PICCA Convention Centre here today. He was responding to a question on whether the RTD would prosecute the owner of the bus company involved in the accident. When asked whether the investigation was affected by allegations that the operator had suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly denied the matter. He said action against the operator was being taken in accordance with existing regulations, and there was no issue related to health conditions. "However, if he (the owner) is hospitalised or otherwise indisposed, we will wait before taking further action. "But for now, we are proceeding with the investigation papers," he added. Transport Minister Anthony Loke was reported as saying that the RTD would take legal action against the bus company if it was found to have violated regulations or failed to ensure operational safety. Fifteen UPSI students were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding, Perak.

BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. 'There are two investigation papers that we are preparing (to take action) against the company operator and also the company that leased the bus. 'The investigation papers are still at the JPJ level and we expect to hand them over to the prosecution soon,' he said at a press conference after officiating the Penang-level MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Handover Ceremony here today. Previously, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook had said that the JPJ would open an investigation paper against the bus company involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students due to the company's failure to operate according to the stipulated rules and regulations. Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning.
