SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged the latest setback in the company's Mars ambitions after a Starship prototype exploded during a ground test in southern Texas.
Musk took to his social media platform X, sharing a post from the space-focused accountSpace Sudoer. The post showed images of the incident with the caption 'Just a scratch.' Musk added his own understated remark: 'Room for improvement.'
The prototype vehicle, designated Starship 36, was undergoing a static fire test at SpaceX's Starbase facility on Wednesday night when it experienced what authorities described as a 'catastrophic failure'. The test, which involves firing the rocket's engines while it remains anchored to the launch pad, resulted in an explosion shortly after 11:00 pm local time (04:00 GMT Thursday).
Dramatic footage shared online captured the moment of the blast, showing a sudden flash followed by a massive fireball engulfing the rocket and launch tower.
In a statement issued after the event, SpaceX confirmed the failure, stating that Starship 36 encountered 'a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase.' While the exact cause remains unknown, the company emphasised that all necessary safety measures had been followed. 'A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation, and all personnel are safe and accounted for,' it said.
Cameron County officials echoed the assurance, adding that there was no immediate threat to nearby communities. Authorities also advised residents to stay away from the area while 'safing' procedures continued.
The explosion is the latest in a series of high-profile incidents to affect the Starship programme, which forms the backbone of Musk's vision to transform humanity into a multiplanetary species. The Starship rocket, which stands at 123 metres and is designed to be fully reusable, aims to carry up to 150 metric tonnes of cargo and crew into orbit and beyond.
Despite repeated setbacks, SpaceX remains committed to the programme, describing such incidents as critical learning moments in the development of the world's most powerful launch system.
No timeline has yet been announced for the next test, but SpaceX is expected to analyse the data thoroughly before proceeding with future launches.

The lift-off – now postponed for the fifth time in three weeks – remains without a confirmed new date. Two days before the scheduled lift-off, NASA announced that it has again decided to stand down from a launch on June 22, and target a new launch date in the coming days. While the initial air leak in the ISS's Zvezda module has already been halted by the crew on-board, NASA said it needed 'additional time to evaluate the station after recent repair work". The space station currently has seven people on board as part of Expedition 73, with four docked spacecraft — two crew and two cargo. NASA's SpaceX Crew 11 mission is also in waiting as it also planned to dock into the ISS in July. However, NASA highlighted that the AX-4 crew including Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla remains on standby and 'ready to launch when the station is ready to receive them", and it continues to review the launch opportunities along with Axiom Space and SpaceX. Axiom Mission-4 has faced a string of delays – from initial weather concerns to a last-minute liquid oxygen leak in the Falcon-9 booster that scrubbed the June 11 launch. While SpaceX has since resolved the issue, the latest setback stems from the ongoing repairs to the ISS's Zvezda module, which NASA and Roscosmos are currently addressing. The ISS was built like a Lego set, with each piece built in various countries around the world, then launched and assembled in space. Five partner agencies, Canada, Europe, Japan, NASA in the US and Russia's Roscosmos operate the ISS with each partner responsible for managing and controlling the hardware it provides. They continue to monitor it to ensure safe habitation for astronauts, carry out repairs and replacements. Over the last 25 years, ISS has hosted astronauts from multiple countries who live and work aboard it. Last week, cosmonauts aboard the ISS detected some air leaks in the back segment of ISS's Zvezda module during regular inspections. It is a core component of the Russian orbital segment, which acts as a primary living space, and provides life support. The air leak in the pressurised module was sealed immediately, but NASA said that it needs additional time to evaluate the ISS after recent repair work. 'Because of the space station's interconnected and interdependent systems, NASA wants to ensure that the station is ready for additional crew members, and it is taking that time to review data," it highlighted. The issue needs to be resolved and validated before any new spacecraft can dock with the ISS. CAN AXIOM MISSION-4 STILL MAKE IT TO ISS NOW? The tension is mounting on the space agencies, as the current launch window is available only till June 30. The lift-off possibilities are narrowing with each passing day, as it was originally designed to be a 14-day mission. There is limited time, considering further delay jeopardises the subsequent missions in July, including some carrying cargo or other essential supplies — a timeline for which is locked in months in advance. Also, ISS has limited docking ports which need to be available, especially for a private spaceflight lasting 14 days. Four ports are already occupied by spacecraft – two crew and two cargo. NASA's SpaceX Crew 11 mission is also in waiting as it also planned to dock into the ISS in July. The launch is also subject to the weather conditions at the launch site near Florida coast, as well as the ascent path of the rocket. Moreover, the four astronauts have been in quarantine for nearly three weeks, and the delay affects their mission readiness. Compounding the urgency are also the 60 carefully chosen science experiments for the 14-day mission, including the seven shortlisted by ISRO—all of which have a limited viability window. Tesla is reportedly set to open its first India showrooms this July. Here's what we know about their location and rent. These units were shipped from the company's manufacturing facility in China. The Model Y is currently the world's best-selling electric car. The first showroom is expected to open in Mumbai by mid-July, followed by another in New Delhi, Bloomberg reported. Here's what we know about Tesla's upcoming showrooms in Mumbai and Delhi Tesla in Mumbai: Most expensive auto showroom deal in the country by far Tesla, has taken 4,000 sq ft of showroom space in India's costliest commercial district, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), in Mumbai, for ₹ 23.38 crore for five years, according to property registration documents accessed by CRE Matrix. The space has been taken on rent by Tesla along with two car parking spaces, and the per sq ft rent works out to be ₹ 881, the documents showed. The amount sets a national record in terms of lease rentals and makes it the most expensive auto showroom lease deal in the country by far, experts said. The documents show that the showroom space has been rented out in a commercial building named Maker Maxity on North Avenue. had reported on March 1 that the company had finalised showroom space in Mumbai's Maker Maxity in BKC, Mumbai, at a monthly rent of around ₹ 35 crore. The registration documents show that the transaction was registered on February 27, 2025, between Univco Properties LLP, the property owner, and Tesla India Motor and Energy Pvt Ltd. Documents show that the lease's tenure started on February 16, 2025, and the rent-free period is from February 16 to March 31. The rental for the lease deal is payable from April 2025 up to February 2030. The security deposit for the transaction is ₹ 2.11 crore, and the rental agreement has a 5% per month rent escalation clause on a per annum basis. According to the documents, the per month rent is ₹ 35.26 lakh, followed by ₹ 37.02 lakh in the second year, ₹ 38.88 lakh in the third year, ₹ 40.82 lakh in the fourth year, and ₹ 42.86 lakh in the fifth year. BKC is Mumbai's central business district (CBD) and a key hub for the Banking and Financial Services Industry (BFSI) and Fortune 500 companies. Tesla picks up managed office space in Mumbai Tesla has also secured 30 seats in a managed office space near Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, the most expensive business district in India. According to sources, the space has a monthly rent of ₹ 3 lakh. The US-based EV firm has leased 30 seats in a co-working office located in Phoenix Market City with a rent of ₹ 3 lakh per month. The lease agreement is for a period of one year and comes with a three-month lock-in period, they said. This is a short-term lease that was executed between EFC and Tesla India Motor & Energy, sources said. They said that in its initial stages of establishment, Tesla has opted for the flexible workspace option to support its evolving needs. Tesla's dedicated vehicle service centre facility in Mumbai Elon Musk's Tesla India Motor and Energy Pvt Ltd has leased 24,565 sq ft of warehouse space at Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai's Kurla area for a total rent of ₹ 24.38 crore for five years, according to property registration documents accessed by CRE Matrix. The new commercial space is in Kurla West, central Mumbai. The newly acquired 24,500 sq. ft facility, located in Macrotech Developers' Lodha Industrial and Logistics Park, will serve as a dedicated vehicle service centre, Tesla's first such facility in the country. The documents showed that the leased space includes two ground-floor units with a combined carpet area of over 18,000 sq ft and a chargeable area exceeding 24,000 sq ft. The starting monthly rent is over ₹ 37.53 lakh for the first year, with a 5% annual escalation, bringing the total rent over the five-year lease period to more than ₹ 24 crore. According to the documents, Tesla will pay ₹ 1.62 crore in common area maintenance charges over five years and has provided a security deposit of ₹ 2.25 crore. The lease agreement was registered on May 16, 2025. The license period begins on April 20, 2025, while the chargeable license period starts on June 1, 2025. Sources told that the per sq ft rent for this deal is around ₹ 218. This is also the first Grade A city warehousing facility suitable for automobile companies, quick commerce companies, and cloud kitchens. Tesla's Delhi showroom space update Sources said that the Delhi showroom space finalised by Tesla is around 4000 sq ft, and the rent is around ₹ 25 lakh per month. Sources said that Tesla has finalised the lease of showroom space in the Aerocity area located in a Brookfield property near New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). In April 2023, Bharti Enterprises Limited (BEL) transferred its 51% stake (held in Rostrum Realty) to Brookfield Group. In June 2024, Bharti Enterprises Limited (BEL) transferred its remaining stake (held in Rostrum Realty) to Brookfield India Real Estate Trust (sponsored by the Brookfield Group).
