Tomato Ho, Alex Lau seal historic squash double for Hong Kong
Hong Kong celebrated double success at the Asian Individual Squash Championships in Malaysia on Saturday with triumphs for Tomato Ho Tze-lok and Alex Lau Tsz-kwan.
Ho beat home favourite Rachel Arnold 3-1 to secure a first Asian title, while Lau beat top seed Abdulla Al-Tamimi of Qatar in straight games at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching to claim his maiden crown.
It marked the first time two Hongkongers won the men's and women's titles in the same year.
'I might look calm on the court but I was quite emotional and still didn't believe I'd won it,' Ho said. 'My opponent might feel more pressure due to her higher ranking and made more mistakes of her own.'
It was a game apiece before Ho took full control with a victory so dominant, she even claimed a bagel to cap it off. She won 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-0 in 35 minutes.

'I was playing my own game and listening to my coach's instructions,' the 29-year-old said. 'So, even when I kept scoring in the final game, I wasn't thinking about [the score] much.

China's women come up just short against Olympic volleyball champions Italy
China's women put up a spirited performance against defending Volleyball Nations League champions Italy at Kai Tak Arena on Sunday, but eventually succumbed to a 3-0 defeat as the Hong Kong leg of the tournament came to a close. The result, which was China's first defeat of the week, means they are sixth with one more week of competition before the finals in Poland. China pushed the Paris Olympic champions all the way in the first two sets, losing 25-21, 32-30, but collapsed in the third, bowing out 11-25. 'All of the matches in Hong Kong told us a lot and I'm really excited about our upcoming performances,' Dong Yuhan, the outside hitter, said. 'Our team has a bright future, we will follow the fighting spirit and try to continue our good results.' Italy's Paola Ogechi Egonu (left) jumps at the net against China. Beauty Joy bags another Group win: ‘He's probably got as much head noise as I did when I was 18'
One of Hong Kong's old warhorses helped Brenton Avdulla celebrate a new arrival at Sha Tin on Sunday night, with Beauty Joy taking out the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m). Not long after welcoming baby boy Kobe to the family, Avdulla landed his second Group victory aboard the notoriously difficult Beauty Joy. 'He's probably got as much head noise as I did when I was 18 years old. We seem to get along very well,' said Avdulla of the Tony Cruz-trained eight-year-old. 'He was good to me last season and we've won another Group race today. Obviously well handled by Tony to get him here in good form and he did his job well.' The old boy, Beauty Joy! 🫡 Tony Cruz's 8YO wins the season's final Group race, the G3 Premier Plate, with @brentonavdulla at Sha Tin... @Beautystablehk #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 22, 2025 After travelling second last in a race with decent early pace, $12.85 chance Beauty Joy worked through traffic early in the straight before charging through the line to salute by a length and a quarter from Hong Kong Derby hero Cap Ferrat. 'He's such a quirky horse, you can't get any feel of him early. You've just got to let the bridle try and fall out of his mouth as much as possible because he can give you a very difficult ride,' said Avdulla of the four-time Group winner. 'I never knew I was really in the race until probably just before the corner when the pace steadied and he got hold of the bridle. I gave him a little click into gear and he felt like the horse that was going to take me a long way. 'He had to come off the Derby winner's back and get out after him and he did that in good style. It was nice to win for a loyal supporter like Tony and for the Kwok family. Kobe has brought a bit of luck to the team.' Cruz confirmed Beauty Joy will race on next season after pushing his prize money past HK$35 million. 'He's always been a very honest horse but difficult to ride. In the parade ring before the race, [owner] Simon [Kwok Siu-ming] said, 'I hope we win this race. If we win this race, we're going to keep on racing him'. He won, so it looks like we're going to keep on racing him next season,' said Cruz. 'He's a healthy horse and as long as he's healthy, we'll keep going. We're going to keep the flow going.' Avdulla finished the season's 81st meeting with a double, also saluting aboard Mister Dapper for David Eustace, while Zac Purton landed a brace of his own with victories aboard Chris So Wai-yin-trained debutant Lightness Of Music and Lo Pan Spirit for Jimmy Ting Koon-ho. Sizzling debut, Lightness Of Music! 🔥 Soon-to-be Australian Racing Hall of Famer @zpurton guides Chris So's first starter to a stylish victory at Sha Tin for owner Nikki Ng... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 22, 2025 'It was a good effort because he got a little bit stirred up in the parade and going out to the track and then he pulled a shoe off [going to the barriers], so we had a little bit to deal with,' Purton said after Lightness Of Music's two-length victory in the Class Four Ruby Handicap (1,000m). 'Once he got behind the gates, it was pretty straightforward from there but it was good to see him do it on race day.' So headed home with multiple winners after also prevailing with Golden Fairy, with that galloper providing the first leg of a double for jockey Lyle Hewitson, who also saluted aboard Douglas Whyte's Morgan Success. Cody Mo Wai-kit also grabbed a brace thanks to wins from Jumbo Treasure and Flying Fortress.

Keagan de Melo tastes maiden Hong Kong Group success as Copartner Prance runs them ragged
Keagan de Melo celebrated his first Hong Kong Group win when $26 outsider Copartner Prance led them a merry dance in the Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday evening. The South African has not hit any great heights this season and his success aboard Francis Lui Kin-wai's Copartner Prance, who also landed a Group-race breakthrough, was a much-needed tonic. Copartner Prance sat on the shoulder of Victor The Winner for the first part of the race, but De Melo took the outright lead at the 1,000m peg and, on a day when front runners were tough to rein in, it was a decisive move. A host of challengers came to try and steal the prize in the straight, but De Melo remained all action and drove his mount home to beat Happy Together by a head. 25/1 shock in the G3 Premier Cup! 😱@kdemelo01 collects his first Group race win in Hong Kong as Copartner Prance defiantly makes all at Sha Tin for trainer Francis Lui...#SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 22, 2025 It was a 1-3-4 for the Lui stable, with $2.9 favourite Packing Hermod and Patch Of Theta chasing their stablemate in vain, but the day ultimately belonged to a grateful De Melo. 'It's a real honour to be in this position and thanks to Francis and his team. The horse's turned out phenomenally and I think he got the right fractions,' said the jockey. 'We all know the numbers don't lie and I don't get many opportunities but thanks to all the trainers that do support me – I really do appreciate it.' It was a third Group-race win of the season for Lui, who also tasted Hong Kong Derby success with Cap Ferrat in March. And the 66-year-old, now on 47 winners for the campaign, was full of praise for both De Melo and his willing partner. It was all smiles for jockey Keagan de Melo and trainer Francis Lui (centre). 'I think the jockey controlled the pace really well. It's the main thing for him to win this race,' said Lui. 'Before we always thought that 1,400m will maybe suit him, but we tried once and he was just too keen. Maybe at the end of the season, he's more relaxed. I'm very happy to get more and more winners.' Elsewhere on the card, the Eustace family's good week continued when the David Eustace-trained Mister Dapper rallied gamely after a prominent run to deny $3.4 favourite Fortune Boy in the Class Four Topaz Handicap (1,600m). David's brother Harry enjoyed a remarkable Royal Ascot, training two Group One winners in the form of globetrotter Docklands and Time For Sandals, and David made sure to add a winner of his own after spending the early part of the week celebrating in the United Kingdom.
