Delhi jewellers all set for Akshaya Tritiya with special discounts, curated jewellery collections and attractive offers

Akshaya Tritiya is an opportune time to buy gold or silver according to the Hindu calendar. This is a valuable window of opportunity that jewellery retailers from South Extension to Chandni Chowk have eagerly tapped into this April. With exclusive discounts, deals, and collections, they are pulling out all stops to drive footfall and boost sales.
Rakesh Bansal, owner of Bansal and Sons Jewellers in Chandni Chowk, tells us, 'We see an increase in footfall during Akshaya Tritiya, but we also offer discounts of up to 75% on making charges to push it further. We're expecting around a 50% rise in sales this season; it's definitely a busy time for us.'
'Launching a new collection around this time is a tradition for us. This year, we've unveiled the Celeste Lume collection, inspired by celestial blessings associated with this day,' says Archana Aggarwal, owner of Archana Aggarwal Timeless Jewellery in Mehrauli.
For a lot of buyers, shopping around this time of the year is more of a long-standing ritual; the discounts and deals are an added bonus. 'Buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is a tradition for me, and with all the offers during this time, it feels a lot lighter on the pocket,' says Barkha Kadam, an advocate.
Some Delhiites save up for their annual purchases through a 'jewellery kitty' – where they deposit a fixed amount every month with a jeweller. 'I buy gold jewellery every year,' said Puneet Gill, a holiday expert. 'I keep putting money into my kitty each month, and then I use it to shop. It's money set aside specifically for this occasion.'
With gold prices soaring and a younger, style-savvy clientele driving new trends, there are new-age D2C brands eager to fill the gap in the market with imitation and statement jewellery. 'We've rolled out 60% off discounts and launched a new collection for the festive season,' says Shraddha Tripathi, founder of BINNI, an online jewellery brand. 'After two slow months, we highly anticipate Akshaya Tritiya as it kicks off the season, and early signs are strong; website traffic is already up by 20%,' she adds.

Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi has announced four new postgraduate courses in economics, hindi, mathematics and philosophy, taking the total PG programmes to 12. Chaturvedi, who is also the Director General of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), joined as the university's V-C last month. He said, 'Expansion of courses are meant to expand academic scope and reinforce NU's role as a premier centre of research and high learning.' The new courses are in consonance with the blended vision of ancient and new Nalanda universities to focus on mathematics and philosophy. Meanwhile, Hindi has been added as part of the Central government's thrust to promote mother tongue, and economics is added as per the V-C's vision. 'The spirit of Nalanda has evolved as a vibrant expression of continuous engagement with eternal values and the civilisational ethos of the east. It embodies a rich intellectual tradition, marked by openness, inclusivity and a globally oriented outlook. Building upon this legacy, the vision for the new Nalanda is shaped by a forward-looking blueprint rooted in integrative wisdom. It draws inspiration from an eastern worldview in which faith, intellectual inquiry and material well-being are not regarded in isolation, but as deeply interwoven dimensions of holistic human existence.' The previous PG courses included historical studies, ecology and environment studies, Buddhist studies, comparative religions, Hindu studies (Sanatana Dharma), world literature, archaeology, international relations and peace studies, and MBA in sustainable development and management. NU, established under Nalanda University Act, 2010, started functioning from 2014 with two PG courses having only 12 students. Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court directed the state authorities to "redress" the problem faced by a Muslim trader in conducting business from his legally owned shop in a Hindu-majority locality in Vadodara city. The HC reminded the state govt that maintaining law and order is its duty. Onali Dholkawala had legally purchased the shop from two Hindu brothers near Champaner Darwaza in 2016. However, he could get the sale deed registered only in 2020 after he approached the HC as the area is covered under the Gujarat Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provisions of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Act, 1991 (Disturbed Areas Act), which restricts property transactions and mandates the district collector's permission for transactions. He continued to face opposition from the neighbourhood, as a couple of the residents challenged the sale to a Muslim and demanded its cancellation, claiming that allowing a Muslim to buy property in the area could lead to polarisation and disturb demographic equilibrium. In Feb 2023, the HC rejected their petition and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of the two litigants by terming such an objection as a "disturbing factor" because the owner "is being hounded and thwarting his attempt to enjoy the fruits of the property which he successfully purchased". An appeal against this order was dismissed as well. However, the locals still did not allow Dholkawala to use the shop. They allegedly dumped debris at the shop's gate so that it could not be opened. He approached the HC once again seeking police protection so that he could get the shop's building repaired and conduct business from the premises. He complained that he had approached Panigate police multiple times requesting protection but allegedly received no support After hearing his case, Justice H D Suthar stated, "In view of the facts of the case and looking to the grievance of the petitioner at Annexure-A, the respondent authority concerned is hereby directed to redress the grievance of the petitioner in accordance with law as it is the duty of the state to maintain the law and order. The Connaught Place, adoring called 'CP' by Delhiites, is home to everything from banks, bookshops, high-end cafes and restaurants, along with brand outlets of almost every top Indian and global one could imagine. But have you ever wondered who actually owns Connaught Place, and how much rent is paid by the decades-old shops and retails outlets which are housed here? Let us delve into some amazing facts about the historic place, some of which will certainly leave you stunned. Who owns Connaught Place? Well, technically, the 'real' owner of Connaught Place is the Government of India, but there's a catch, a really big one. Beneath is overt government ownership, there are scores of lease deeds, family inheritances, and rental agreements dating as far back as the British era, which dilute the state's practical ownership of Connaught Place. According to various reports, several buildings at Connaught Place were leased out during the British rule, and surprisingly some of these leases still hold today, and will hold for the foreseeable future. Thus many shops here still pay rents that have not been revised for decades, due to the terms mentioned in those lease agreements. As per a News18 reports, some pay monthly rent as low as Rs 100, which is unprecedented for a prime site like Connaught Place, where even the smallest shops would pay lakhs in monthly rent, according to modern real-estate prices. Reports suggest that some wily individuals built thriving real estate empires by leasing dozens of shops during the British era, and their families and heirs are now reaping the lucrative benefits of those investments. While the practice could be called unethical, but its completely legal, thus leaving little room for modern-day governments to act without drastically changing real-estate laws. Connaught Place monthly rent However, apart from those ancient lease agreements, Connaught Place is one of the country's most expensive retail locations today, with monthly rent ranging between Rs 300 to Rs 700 per square foot, depending on the Block. But many businesses still pay monthly rents that have not been revised since 1947, thanks to the Old Delhi Rent Control Act, allowing tenants– which are often multinational chains and national banks– to rake in massive profits. As per an Economic Times report, Connaught Place saw a 33% year-on-year rise in high street retail rent in 2023.
