Have you ever experienced the arguably very stressful scenario of buying a property without even seeing it in reality? Andrew Newland from Pontypridd and Alexandra from Mold have done it - three times - and one of the unseen purchases was as unique as the situation.
After spending 14 years living and teaching in Asia teaching in China, Thailand, Vietnam and lastly Hong Kong, the couple were ready to come home to Wales to re-establish roots for raising a family.

The pair were looking for a business to buy with their friends John and Rachel, and stumbled across surely one of the most wonderful and wild holiday lets in west Wales - a pocket of land that is home to a genuine Romany wagon as well as a wooden cabin and pretty slice of land. Andrew says: " We hadn't actually seen the place, we were still in Hong Kong when we bought it - we sent our in-laws as scouts and they had a good look around for us and they fell in love with the place - it's unique - just under an acre and where the wagon and cabin are and then separate flower meadow connected by a small bridge that we built and there's a section of river that flows through the site with trout and salmon and otters.
"Family and friends thought we were 'a bit mad' but they know us and in life we've taken the road less travelled, so it was very 'on brand' for us."
But as soon as the couple visited the site near Llangrannog, Ceredigion they were enchanted. Andrew remembers: " We were immediately taken by it - there was a storm, my wife was heavily pregnant with our second child and the phone signal is not very good and there's no WiFi but even with all that we fell in love with the place.

"It's the silence - the fact it was totally cut off - such a difference to what we were used to, to Hong Kong - to come into that, a slice of heaven in Wales. It's where time slows down.

"I love the wagon most of all, it's almost womb-like! Because the cover is all insulated you're cosseted from sound as well so it's very much how I imagine what a womb is like. It's got a nice big comfy bed and heating, room under the bed to fit a dog bed too if visitors want to bring their dog away with them.

"The wagon is one of the main reasons why the site got planning permission as a holiday let - because of the historical value of the wagon itself, it's a genuine vintage Romany wagon. And i t's a stunning location even if the weather is not great, you can still lie in bed, read a book with the top half of the wagon door open and watch the rain."

The site comes with a wooden cabin too that offers a kitchenette with bistro table and chairs and an amazing view from the kitchen sink, a shower room and a lounge which opens out onto a new raised deck area, one of the features the couple have worked on since owning the site, as well as tidying the foliage, renovating the paths, painting the wagon and building a bridge over the little river.

Andrew says: "You come out of the cabin in the morning with your coffee and you sit there and you feel like you're in the trees, you're well above the wagon and above the river so you're up mid-tree level - you're in amongst the birds - there are so many fantastic birds there - we fill the feeders and watch them and that's all you can hear, the bird song and the river."

But not seeing the site before they bought it was not the challenge for the couple. It is said by many people that timing is important with a property purchase and for Andrew and Alex it was bad timing - they came back to Wales and were the new owners of the site in December 2019, just a few months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

Andrew, a retrofit assessor, says the situation wiped out the first 18 months of running the tranquil and secluded site as a successful holiday let and led to a change of plan and location for the family.

He says: " We were going to come back home and set up a holistic fitness retreat, run it from the land and develop it further and have more accommodation but we had to make other plans and so I started a business near Chester so we ended up being based in north Wales."

The two couples ran the holiday let business via booking.com and trying to visit the site as much as possible to keep it maintained and also stay and enjoy it themselves occasionally.
Andrew says: "People love it as much as we do which is fantastic, everybody who comes to stay seems to have the same experience - people feel like they are transported back to a simpler time - lack of phone signal, lack of WiFi, it taps into a sense of nostalgia."

The site has even attracted the attention of TV presenter and celebrity Richard Hammond, who stayed back in 2007 before the two couples owned it and it was booked via company Under The Thatch, said: "It was only in the morning that I fully appreciated why this place is so popular.
"Although the caravan scores high on novelty points, it's the setting that's the real winner. Tucked away in the corner of a wild-flower meadow next to the river where brown trout and otter are protected as part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it's secluded and ridiculously picturesque."

However after a few years making the three to four hour journey from north Wales to this special spot near the Ceredigion coast it is with heavy hearts the two couples have decided to sell the site and pass on this idyllic and enchanting site on to a new owner, who has the chance to realise its potential to expand the business into the land and increase the size of the cabin, subject to planning of course, and if they want to.
Andrew says the experience has taught them the value of owning a holiday let and says if someone is thinking of purchasing the site, or any other unique property, they should consider what makes it distinctive in the first place, and cherish it. He says: "Try and maintain the character of the place. It would have been easy for us to tear the cabin down, to remove the wagon, and put on some standard glamping facility but we wanted to maintain the character of the place - we wanted to keep it authentic, that's what we strived for.
"Keep the authenticity of the place and then it rings true to everybody who comes. Oh, and make sure it's not a four hour drive away, get one closer to where you live!"

Andrew says: "Selling is definitely bittersweet for us. It holds a lot of emotional value, and parting with it isn't easy. That said, it's a necessary step for the next phase of our lives, which we're genuinely excited about.
"While there's some sadness and disappointment in letting it go, we're also happy knowing that someone else will have the chance to realise the full potential of the site. It's a special place, and we hope the new owners will love it as much as we have."

It's quite easy to find Mojo's restaurant in Rhosneigr. It's opposite Scarlett's Fish & Chip bar and Gecko, a shop selling beach products and renting out surf boards. You come across it if you've parked in the village and are heading towards the beach. I called in on a sunny Wednesday lunchtime last week. It's been operating for some years and is continuing with its French-themed dishes on its pleasingly diverse menu. You can expect galettes and crepes among the more traditional choices of Chicken club sandwich, Smashed avocado on toast and Rocky Road dessert. The galettes - a pancake made with organic buckwheat flour and served with salad and slaw - include ones with Steak, mushrooms and blue cheese (£13.50) and a Yellow Dot galette with cheese, Welsh ham and a local free range egg yolk. (£12.95). However my heart sank as it seemed busy from the look of the packed, outdoor tables and I worried about getting a seat but almost all the indoor tables were available. I sat there and checked the menu. There's a good range of sandwiches and ciabattas. Steak ciabatta with caramelised onions (£15.95), Halloumi with homemade chilli jam and lettuce ciabatta (£12.50) sounded good, as did the Welsh ham & cheese ciabatta (£11.50). But I liked the idea of a Bloody Mary Prawn open sandwich. It was described as "Atlantic prawns with rustic tomato sauce, mayonnaise, hint of vodka, baby gem lettuce (in a) fresh, multigrain open sandwich." The prawns were lovely and soft, and sprinkled with paprika. The "hint of vodka" may have been there but wasn't noticeable to me, and the lettuce was rocket on this occasion. It was a lovely, well-presented, light meal. There was a nice touch - a warm, grilled lemon which when squeezed over the seafood really gave those prawns some zesty piquancy. The slice of brown bread was fresh. Desserts here include a Canadian pancake Stack with four light and fluffy pancakes for £8. Customers can add a rasher of "streaky bacon" for £2. I was impressed that extra toppings like strawberries and bananas only cost £1 each. The crepes included Rocky Road (£8.50) with chocolate pieces, biscuit, marshmallows and chocolate sauce, and Biscoff (£9.50). This had "clotted cream, ice cream and Biscoff crumble" and I ordered that. The crepe was doughy and warm and came with a sauce and a sprinkling of Biscoff crumbs rather than crumble as such. Personally I would have referred a more conventional, thicker crumble. Checking with the hardworking chef Jeff later he said the sauce was a Biscoff sauce. It was pleasant enough. The vanilla ice cream worked better with the crepe than the what seemed to be whipped cream on my visit, because its sweetness contrasted nicely with the savoury dough. The choice of drinks at the bar includes Brooklyn - The Stonewall Inn IPA, and Birrificio Angelo Poretti lager (4.8pc) aswell as products from The Rhosneigr Gin Company. Mojo's interior is unpretentious. There's a wooden floor with tables and bar made from planks of timber. In keeping with the coastal setting there are prints of a turtle and shell on the wall, and even a bizarre, seaweed, themed lampshade. I'd definitely call in again. Mojo's is a cut above your average seaside eaterie. A visit here sets you up nicely to explore this charming village and Rhosneigr's two beaches Traeth Crigyll and Traeth Llydan. Two young Welsh women among 15 who perished in backpacker hostel arson that will never be forgotten Natalie Morris and Sarah Williams died in the blaze started by killer Robert Long at the Palace Backpackers Hostel in Australia 25 years ago Natalie Morris, 28, from Merthyr Tydfil and Sarah Williams, 23, from Cefn Coed, died in the backpackers hostel fire A quarter of a century has passed since a loner set light to the Palace backpackers' hostel in Australia in a shocking act that led to the deaths of 15 people. Memorial events are being held to mark the 25th anniversary of the deadly blaze in the small Queensland town of Childers on June 23 2000. The horrific tragedy left survivors in trauma, local people deeply shocked and the bereaved devastated. ‌ For the families of Natalie Morris, 28, from Merthyr Tydfil and Sarah Williams, 23, from Cefn Coed, who lost their lives that night, it was a personal tragedy with the added pain that the young women perished halfway across the globe, far from loved ones, on what should have been the trip of a lifetime. ‌ Natalie and Sarah were among seven travellers from Britain, along with three from the Netherlands, three Australians, one from Japan and a South Korean who died in their beds that night after a deranged killer torched the building. Escape from the deadly blaze was hampered by an exit blocked with furniture and barred windows. In 2006 an inquest into the deaths revealed that emergency exits at the hostel had been obstructed by bunk beds, doors and windows were nailed closed or barred, fire alarms weren't operational and, with 80 guests inside on the night of the fire, the premises was overcrowded. Article continues below Kelly Symonds from Aberfan, a former school friend who'd travelled to Australia with Natalie and Sarah, managed to escape the inferno at the near-century-old converted pub. In the midst of the horror a fellow guest managed to squeeze her through the barred window of the room in which they were sleeping. Natalie Morris Robert Long, a loner who had previously been evicted from the building lit the fire deliberately that night. After being kicked out of the hostel he set fire to it in the early hours of June 23 2000. In 2002 the drifter and fruit picker was sentenced to life in prison for murder and 15 years for arson. ‌ Quarter of a century on the community of Childers, 180-miles north of Brisbane, has never been forgotten. The community is gathering with survivors and the bereaved this weekend to remember those whose lives were cut short. After the fire many survivors were temporarily housed locally at the Isis Cultural Centre, where some of the memorial events will take place. (Image: AP ) ‌ Memorials, led by Bundaberg Regional Council will run between June 21 and 23 and include a memorial vigil at the Sacred Heart Church in the town followed by a performance project called "The Palace" at the Isis Cultural Centre. There will be two public performances of "The Palace" on Saturday, June 21 followed by a private, invitation-only performance on Monday, June 23rd, the anniversary of the fire. The Childers Arts Space in the Palace Memorial Building, will also be open for quiet reflection throughout the weekend but will be closed to the public on June 23rd for the private memorial. Inside the space is The Palace Backpackers Memorial, a memorial wall by Sam Di Mauro containing 15 memory boxes, each dedicated to one of the victims, and a portrait Taking a Break in the Field by Josonia Palaitis. Visitors will be able to leave messages of remembrance for the victims, their families, and survivors. Many in the town still remember that night. Residents knitted blankets and donated food and backpacks for survivors, many of whom had lost everything in the fire. Local people cooked for survivors and local businesses helped with food, clothing, and other items they needed. Princess Anne visited a few weeks after the blaze to meet the surviving backpackers and others involved in the aftermath. ‌ When he was jailed Long, then 37, was told he could not apply for parole for 20 years. In 2020 his application for freedom caused outrage and opposition, including from Natalie's grieving father Ken Morris. Long was denied parole that year but applied again for a second time earlier this summer. Australian media has reported that the president of the Queensland Parole Board will now consider whether to limit Long's ability to apply for parole through a restricted prisoner declaration. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported a statement from Queensland Corrective Services saying: "The parole application is not being considered while the restricted prisoner matter is determined by the president." ‌ A decision on the declaration will be made after victims have been given time to make submissions. When Long previously applied for bail survivors mounted a petition and said he should never be freed. In 2020 Dutch survvor of the blaze Rob Jansen launched an internet petition calling for Long's parole application to be denied forever. "We, the survivors of the blaze, are trying to reach the attention of the Parole Board Queensland, to convince them that Robert Paul Long should remain behind bars and serve time for the rest of his life," he said. ‌ Killer Robert Long (Image: AP ) A year after the fire that stole their daughters Natalie's parents, Ken and Yvonne Morris and Sarah's parents Ryland and Margaret Williams attended the opening of the memorial in Childers in 2001. Yvonne has since passed away and Kens spoke about his disgust at Long's bid for parole in 2020. ‌ Speaking in 2013 Sarah's mother said: "'We just have to try to get on with our lives and we are struggling. We loved them so much." Ken Morris expressed what no parent ever wants to go through: "We are broken hearted." It is this pain that the comunity of Childers knows it can never erase, but hopes to ease with memorial events this weekend. Article continues below
