San Beda sweeps EAC to stay in Final Four race

San Beda University swept Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-16, 26-24, 25-21, on Saturday in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament at the San Andres Gym in Manila.
With the win, the Red Spikers improved to 10-7 and remained in the hunt for a spot in the Final Four.
Dominic Castañeda had 21 out of San Beda's 22 excellent sets as three spikers scored in double digits for the Mendiola-based squad.
Ralph Cabalsa led San Beda with 15 points from 12 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Anrie Bakil had 12 points built on eight attacks, three blocks, and an ace. Axel Van Book added 12 points to go with six digs.
Frelwin Taculog, meanwhile, led the Generals with 17 points as the already-ran EAC slipped to 5-12.
San Beda will face defending champion University of Perpetual Help System DALTA next on Wednesday, while EAC will try to end its season on a high note against San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Tuesday.

NCAA San Beda University's Amir Aningalan is among the Collegiate Press Corps' first football awardees in its upcoming Awards Night on June 30. Diansuy, a goalkeeper, was instrumental in FEU's championship run against Ateneo de Manila University where they won over penalties, 1-1 (5-4). Altiche, on the other hand, played a key role in FEU'S 3-2 win over La Salle in the Finals as she not only converted a penalty in the 45+7th minute, but also made a crucial cross to Regine Rebosura for the goal in the 67th minute. Surging EAC grabs share of lead with escape vs. Arellano; Mapua, Perpetual gut out wins

Emilio Aguinaldo College narrowly escaped a determined Arellano University with a 66-64 win on Wednesday to extend its winning streak and grab a share of top spot in the 18th Filoil Preseason Cup. The Generals wasted a 12-point lead, but restored order in the endgame thanks to clutch baskets from holdovers Brianne Angeles and Nicole Quinal to surge to their fourth straight wins for a 6-1 card. More importantly, EAC forced a tie at the top with Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Down one in the final minute, Angeles completed a layup off a dish from rookie EJ Castillo, making up for a missed three-pointer in the previous play to give EAC a slim 65-64 lead. Quinal then split his free throws after forcing a foul from King Vinoya to seal it for the Generals. Quinal top-scored EAC with 15 points while Jude Bagay and Ruzzelle Dominguez posted 11 and 10 markers each as the Generals continued to make its case as a title contender ahead of NCAA Season 101. In other games, Mapua University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA took care of their jobs against Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos, respectively. The defending champions Cardinals relied on an all-around outing from graduating Clint Escamis to pull off a 76-68 win against the rebuilding Heavy Bombers. Escamis posted 13 points, seven assists, and three rebounds to help Mapua improve to 4-2 while Cyril Gonzales churned out a team-high 21 markers together with four rebounds, two dimes, and two steals. Perpetual, on the other hand, halted a three-game slide by eking out a 75-61 win against the Stags behind near double-double showing from debuting transferee Patrick Sleat. Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night

The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. This is our own little way of immortalizing them for what they have done not just for their respective schools, but also for collegiate sports as a whole,' said Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star.
