Probe as SANDF confirms deadly incident at Mpumalanga base
The SANDF and SAPS have launched a joint investigation into the deaths of two soldiers at the Macadamia Military Base in Mpumalanga.
The SANDF confirmed Saturday's incident near Komatipoort in a statement.
'A SANDF member, who had been approved for withdrawal from duty, attacked fellow soldiers in his accommodation. One member died during the incident. The attacker later died from self-inflicted wounds when he stabbed himself on the neck,' said the SANDF on Saturday.
The SANDF said Military Health and Chaplain Services were sent to support the affected members.
'The SANDF and the South African Police Service launched a joint investigation. The names of the deceased were withheld until their families had been informed. Further details will be shared as the investigation continues.'
The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, and the chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, have sent their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. –SAnews.gov.za

2 men feared trapped in abandoned eMalahleni mine
Two men are believed to be trapped inside an abandoned mine close to Duvha Park in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga. Witbank News reports that, according to information received, the men went to the mine with a group to 'hustle'. Police were on the scene with search dogs, but have found no sign of the missing men so far. SANDF members accused of killing Hawks investigator and kidnapping foreign nationals
The suspects are two soldiers from the SANDF. Two soldiers from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday in Gauteng on charges of murder and kidnapping. The soldiers, aged 36 and 51, were arrested on Sunday, June 22, at the OR Tambo International Airport and in Centurion, Pretoria, respectively. The spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (known as Hawks), Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo, stated that the arrests were carried out by members of the Johannesburg-based Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, the Headquarters' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, and the Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS). 'The arrests are linked to the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, who was fatally shot while driving on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal on August 6, 2023. Following the shooting, his vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch,' Singo said.

Limpopo mother shot during late-night trip, security guard arrested
A Limpopo family is seeking answers after a woman (28) was shot in her back near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, allegedly by a security guard believed to be employed by a security company. Polokwane Review reports that, according to the Limpopo police, the shooting took place at around 23:00 on Friday night as the family was travelling in a silver bakkie from Gauteng. Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the shooting unfolded near the three-mile circle on the N1, where the vehicle was stopped by an unknown vehicle. 'The driver did not stop, suspecting potential criminal activity, and instead made a U-turn. The vehicle continued until they made another U-turn heading back towards Louis Trichardt,' he adds. Ledwaba says shots were fired at the vehicle, leading to the injury of the female passenger. Reports suggest the family was travelling with four children at the time of the shooting. 'The suspect was arrested at the scene and a Siga 7.62 rifle, believed to have been used in the incident, was confiscated during the arrest,' Ledwaba says. According to social media eyewitness accounts, the family was taken to hospital for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the shooting will form part of the ongoing investigation. The suspect is expected to appear in the Makhado Magistrate's Court today on charges of attempted murder. The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the incident.
