Coronation Street and Emmerdale boss QUITS after 30 years as ITV soaps set for huge shake-up after cash crisis
CORONATION Street and Emmerdale boss John Whiston has quit ITV after nearly 30 years.
The channel veteran has overseen epic live episodes and helped shape storylines that have pulled in millions of viewers.

In a statement, Whiston said: 'I've always said I've got the best job in TV. I used to say it privately in case ITV stopped paying me.
"It has been nothing short of an honour, as well as a blast, to work on the Soaps this last decade or so. We've had joy, we've had fun and we've had seasons in the Sun.
"We've also had misery and mayhem. We've had motorway crashes, tram crashes and floods. We've had stories which have squeezed your heart till tears came out of your eyes.
"And we've covered pretty much anything and everything that people have to face in their own lives and we've done that with care and humanity.
"And all that is down to the 600 or so people - the writers, crew, cast and editorial – who have kept the show on air and at an incredible quality day in day out. And it's them who have made my job ridiculously easy. Just don't tell ITV."
Replacing him will be Iain MacLeod as Creative Director and Matt Cleary as Chief Operating Officer.
John continued: "With fantastic stories in place for the move to five episodes a week next January, and a never-before-seen mega mash-up between the two shows, the future for our ITV Soaps is set fair.
"So it's the right time to leave and for me just to say thank you… to colleagues, to ITV and to our loyal, appreciative audience.'
Tributes for the highly-respected TV man came from the very top of the station.
Kevin Lygo, Managing Director, Media and Entertainment said: "John has been a stalwart of ITV, the North, and the soaps for a very long time. His fingerprints are all over Coronation Street and Emmerdale and they are all the better for it.

"Every twist and turn of the plotlines have had input from John and he will be sorely missed by all that have worked with him. ITV and I have been very fortunate to work with such a wonderful man. We wish him well in the next episode of his life.'
Whiston began his career at the BBC and earlier in his career helped BBC2 rival BBC1 for viewing figures after introducing theme nights.
He also launched hugely successful shows like Vic & Bob's Shooting Stars and Lee & Herring's Fist of Fun.
A move to Manchester saw him commission and produce iconic shows that are still much-loved to this day. Among them was Red Dwarf, The Mrs Merton Show and The Royle Family.
He switched to rival ITV in 1999 as Director of Programmes at Yorkshire TV, immediately making an impact on the likes of Emmerdale, Heartbeat and A Touch of Frost.
His stellar eye for a good drama showed no sign of abating with At Home with the Braithwaites, Fat Friends and Lost For Words among his successes.
Whiston followed this by taking over ITV's drama stable including programmes like Poirot, Marple, Prime Suspect, Vera, Lewis, the Oscar-winning feature film, The Queen and Coronation Street.
He was promoted to Director of ITV Productions in 2005, a role he held for five years before finishing as Managing Director of Continuing Drama and Head of ITV in the North.

We are now just days away from the Oasis Live 25 tour kicking off in Cardiff with final details emerging The support acts playing at as part of the Oasis Live 25 tour are sure to delight most fans - as they have regularly played with Oasis in the past. His first chapter with The Verve reached a remarkable peak with 'Urban Hymns', and his support slot is sure to be a hit-laden set with the likes of 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', 'The Drugs Don't Work', 'Lucky Man' and 'Sonnet'. These tracks made Urban Hymns one of the biggest selling albums in UK history with 11 x Platinum certifications. As well as the Oasis Live 25 tour, Ashcroft will play select headline shows and festivals this Summer. According to the official Prinicipality Stadium website, doors open for the opening gig on July 4 at 5pm. Both support acts will be expected to play 30-45 minutes on stage, before the main event of Oasis back on stage for the first time since 2009. Based on previous shows at the Principality Stadium, the main headline act normally ends around 10.20pm. Cast would therefore be on stage around 6.30, followed by Richard Ashcroft, with Oasis taking to the stage around 8pm. Last Summer the Foo Fighters played the Principality Stadium and came on at 7.35pm but played an epic 25 song set. Oasis who are returning after some time away, may play a slightly shorter set, especially based on their history of punchier shorter set lists.

Stephen Mulhern's £1m Butlin's role axed in latest career blow for ITV star
Former Butlin's redcoat Stephen Mulhern has lost his lucrative £1m contract with the famous holiday firm. ITV star Stephen Mulhern has been dealt a huge career blow. The presenter has been dropped from his reported £1million gig as the face of Butlins, rounding off a spate of ill fortune with work commitments. Mulhern, 48, hasn't had his contract renewed with the famous family-friendly UK holiday resort chain. As part of the deal he performed magic shows on stage at the firm's centres in Minehead, Bognor Regis and Skegness, but he will not return after the summer season. A spokesperson confirmed the news and stated that the star, a former redcoat for the legendary firm, had 'enjoyed' his time working with the brand. The spokesperson told the Mirror: 'Stephen has absolutely loved being part of the Butlin's family - performing his stage shows in front of thousands of holiday makers across the country and the relationship with Butlin's remains hugely positive. "This change allows Stephen to explore new opportunities in the family holiday space – something he's incredibly passionate about." A Butlin's spokesperson added: "Stephen has been an incredible part of the Butlin's experience and continues to be a valued member of the family. Stephen's much-loved live show won't return in 2026 after three fantastic years, but we're thrilled to be working together on ongoing projects this autumn.' Stephen's Butlin's axe was revealed by the Sun, as a source told them: 'Stephen has been a massive hit with holidaymakers. He began his career as a Redcoat and has kept families brilliantly entertained.' The TV magician's role on ITV Dancing On Ice came to an end earlier this year when the show was cancelled. The reality ice skating competition was cancelled due to low ratings, after Stephen had joined Holly Willoughby to host in January. He replaced Phillip Schofield, who was booted from all of his ITV roles after his affair with a younger colleague at This Morning was revealed in 2023. And last year, Stephen's other TV show, In For A Penny, was cancelled after six seasons , though there have been hinted it will return. A source previously told The Sun: "So don't put your pennies away just yet as the team could be popping up in your local town, to challenge even more members of the public to take part in their unique and madcap games in the future." Stephen also suffered a traumatic time in his personal life last year when his dad passed away. Stephen paid tribute to his late father in a touching moment after his Royal Variety Performance act last December. As the audience applauded his magic tricks, he said: "That was for you dad." This estate comprises 12 properties, including a pub named The B*gger Inn and his own vineyard. These features will be showcased in an upcoming ITV documentary that follows Edmonds as he builds a new life in New Zealand. Julie, a British expat living near River Haven, had the opportunity to work with Noel in his vineyard after offering to help with the grape harvest.
