Major food chain makes specific request to staff

Chipotle has made a very specific request of its staff, and bosses hope it will help the business in an economic downturn. The Mexican fast-casual has ordered its employees to smile at customers in an effort to boost its hospitality. 'The fact is smiles down the line don't slow us down,' CEO Scott Boatwright told investors during an earnings call on Wednesday.
It comes as consumer sentiment is falling as fears of an imminent recession grow . Customers are keen to keep their spending in check and are therefore visiting less frequently, Boatwright told analysts. The brand is performing well on food quality and speed of service, and revenue is up 6.4 percent compared to the same time last year.
However, internal analysis found 'deficiencies' in store's cleanliness, the friendliness of its staff and how restaurants follow up on customers' complaints. In response Boatwright wants Chipotle to create a 'guest obsessed' culture that keeps customers coming back. 'This includes a friendly smile at tortilla, a heartfelt thank you from our cashier, clean dining rooms and drink stations, and great guest on-site recovery for any issue,' he explained.
Chipotle reported a strong start to the year with revenue reaching $2.9 billion in the first three months of the year. However, its same-restaurant sales fell 0.4 percent in the same period and transactions fell 2.3 percent, reflecting consumers cutting back on dining out. The chain plans to lure back repeat diners with a boost to customer experience rather than any cuts to its menu prices. In fact Boatwright has previously warned that if anything prices would rise following Trump's tariffs.
Boatwright told analysts that the company is already making strides on elevating diners experience. Refunds as a percentage of sales and the cost of dealing with customer complaints are both down. The company is also planning to roll out more kitchen equipment to help make order fulfillment more efficient.
The introduction of produce slicers, dual-sided planchas for cooking chicken and steak, three-pan rice cookers, and dual-vat fryers will begin in 100 locations in the coming months before being rolled out nationwide in the next few years. In August, Chipotle also introduced the 'autocado' a machine able to peel, stone and cut an avocado for guacamole in 26 seconds.
Meanwhile, a 'digital makeline' portions up salads and bowls based on orders on the app. 'The end goal is to improve the experience for our teams by making tasks easier to execute, more efficient, faster and more consistent while maintaining our high culinary standards,' the CEO explained on Wednesday.
Chipotle's plans are similar to the turnaround efforts at Starbucks. CEO Brian Niccol, who formerly held the top job at Chipotle, has asked staff to boost customer experience by writing messages on their coffee cups . However, the plans have already sparked a backlash among baristas who claim it slows down orders and feels 'forced.'

A MAJOR café chain with 473 locations in the UK is due to shut a popular branch with staff 'left in tears'. Pret A Manger has announced its closing the store, just three years after it re-opened. 1 The Gallowtree Gate branch in Leicester City Centre, initially closed in 2020 due to "the effects of the pandemic". However, it made a shock return following an announcement two years later. It re-opened on July 25, 2022 at the same location. But rumours started swirling earlier this week that the popular chain was to shut for good once again. A source told Leicestershire Live that staff were told on Thursday and that there were "lots of tears". A spokesperson for Pret A Manger confirmed that they will be leaving Leister for a second time. They did not give a specific date for the closure but it is expected to be some time in July. They said: "It has been a pleasure serving our customers at Pret's Gallowtree Gate shop in Leicester. "Closing a shop is never a decision we take lightly, and our priority now is supporting our team members." Shoppers were recently stunned when another Pret A Manager branch suddenly closed with no warning in April. The store in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, caught loyal customers by surprise and had been a well-loved part of the outlet centre for years. Another chain, Starbucks, which has over 1,000 UK venues also abruptly pulled the plug on one of its stores in Oxford last month. Pret opened its first shop in London in 1986 and the chain employs 12,500 staff in more than 700 locations across 21 countries. The Sun reported previously reported that Pret's owner, Luxembourg-based Jab Holding, was planning a stock market flotation and could consider selling a stake in the business first. JAB, which also owns Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Keurig Dr Pepper, has ambitions in the insurance and asset management industry and wants to reduce its reliance on the consumer sector. The chain came under fire from customers in April following sweeping changes to its Club Pret subscription. Once offering five free barista-made drinks a day for £30 a month, members now only receive 50 per cent off five drinks a day instead. 'Emerging markets no longer on the periphery of progress'

Over the past decade, many investors have looked at EM with a mixture of caution and nostalgia, haunted by memories of currency crises and political turmoil. But today's EM landscape looks very different. Structural reform, rising domestic consumption, and tech-led innovation are combining to produce companies and economies that are adaptable and profitable. This transformation is perhaps best captured by businesses like a 'super-app' used by the majority of the adult Kazak population for everything from banking and bill payments, to shopping and ride-hailing. It has fundamentally reshaped the country's economy. Or take Luckin Coffee in China, which now has many more outlets than Starbucks and continues to grow rapidly into an underpenetrated market. These aren't speculative moonshots. They are scaling in key domestic markets with improving profitability and thus operational resilience. Two key headwinds - the strong US dollar and negative sentiment towards China - have been turning. An increasing amount of EM-to-EM trade is being done in non-dollar currencies. The weak dollar is not only supportive of EM financial conditions but also creates favourable sentiment at a time when there are plenty of reasons to ask questions of the traditional safe-haven countries of the world. With over $22 trillion held by non-US investors in American assets - much of it unhedged - even a small shift in allocation could drive renewed EM demand. Meanwhile, China's trajectory is not solely about geopolitics or trade policy, as some doomsayers posit. In fact, this may be the wrong focus completely. It's about a massive, increasingly self-sufficient domestic economy. Retail sales in China are over ten times greater than its exports to the US - a fact that should redirect our focus from tariffs to the consumer. Companies like Meituan and DeepSeek are testament to China's technological resilience. And for what it's worth, over 70% of the world now trades more with China than with the US. On top of this, Chinese consumer spending is visibly starting to recover. Read more: We often talk about EM as if it were a single monolith. It is not. What binds these regions is clearly not geography or even income level. But the quality of opportunity and scale of ambition across such a vast set of countries is trending upwards and worth shouting about. There are many more world class EM companies than before, in a range of industries: in semiconductors, gaming, fintech, and green energy, to name a few. For example, CATL in electric vehicle batteries, SK Hynix in High Bandwith Memory (memory chips used for high-performance computing and AI), and Tencent and SEA in gaming. The best companies earn their place in portfolios through world-class execution, deep competitive moats, high returns on capital, and often, scarcity of competition. EM's best companies are, in many cases, the only game in town for investors seeking exposure to essential themes like electrification, digital transformation, and resource resilience. Perhaps the most dangerous risk for investors today is underexposure to this transformation. Valuations remain modest. Domestic markets are deepening. Currency, debt, and governance risks - while still present - are far better managed than in previous cycles. And most importantly, these companies are not all reliant on a rebound in global trade or commodity prices. Many are thriving in local ecosystems, with local customers, on local capital. This is not to say the path ahead is smooth. Politics is messy (though isn't that true in developed markets too?). Markets are often volatile. But the direction of travel is clear. Emerging markets are no longer on the periphery of progress - they are increasingly the protagonists. To ignore them is not caution, it's more likely negligence.
