'Spectacular': Review: The Lion, Witch & Wardrobe @ Festival Theatre

A World War Two soldier is playing We'll Meet Again on the piano at the start of this latest tour of C.S. Lewis' classic morality tale. The melancholy melody is about the most down to earth thing you're likely to see over the next two hours of a show that turns its dramatic world upside down in epic fashion. Scaled up by director Michael Fentiman from Sally Cookson's 2017 version at Leeds Playhouse, the result is spectacular.
The opening song sets the tone for the wartime evacuation of the four Pevensie children, who are decamped to Aberdeen, where the allure for their new home's spare room proves too much for the eternally curious Lucy. Before she knows where she is she has gone beyond the flea ridden fur coats and landed in Narnia.
As imagined by designer Tom Paris and original designer Rae Smith, the Narnia under the queendom of Katy Stephens' White Witch's more resembles some Fritz Lang styled dystopia driven by a constructivist chain gang who seem to have stepped out of a 1970s adult SF comic.

Yes, the White Witch has got the power, as she proves with her jawdropping metamorphosis at the end of the first act, but Spring is coming. This is the case even if Lucy's daft brother Edmund sells out his siblings for a bumper sized box of Turkish Delight personified by way of Toby Olié and Max Humphries' larger than life puppetry.
Fentiman's slickly oiled machine is driven by Barnaby Race and Benji Bower's chamber folk score played by the cast of more than twenty throughout. Despite the show's grandiose staging, it is the humanity of the piece that gives the show its heart and soul. This is even the case with Stanton Wright's messianic looking Aslan, embodied by a life size lion puppet beside him as he spars with the White Witch and her well drilled minions.
As Shanell 'Tali' Fergus' choreography navigates the cast from dark to light, it is the Pevensie clan who shine. Joanna Adaran as Susan, Jesse Dunbar as Peter, Kudzai Mangombe as Lucy and Shane Anthony Whiteley stepping up as Edmund for a Thursday matinee briefly halted by technical gods all rise to the occasion in a big show that never loses sight of the eternal story at its heart.

I flew 6,000 miles to meet a stranger for a date

Among the passengers who boarded the packed airliner from London to Vietnam last November, one in particular was lost in deep thought. And little wonder. Lucy Rout, 30, was about to fly 6,216 miles on a whim to have a date with a man she'd met months earlier at an awards ceremony in London. After three years as a singleton who had given up on romance, she was heading out to join the virtual stranger on his tour of Southeast Asia. It was to prove the gamble of her life. 'I was so super-nervous but also really excited too,' she tells Metro. 'He was sending me lovely messages throughout and we spoke on the phone during layovers which definitely helped to ease the nerves a bit. But of course, I was thinking, 'What happens next? 'He met me at the airport with a mango smoothie, which is my favourite,' she says. 'We had a huge hug and it felt normal and completely natural straightaway. 'When I got to my room he had blown up two huge '30' balloons as it had been my birthday the week before and left some really thoughtful presents for me.' So what happened next? 'We spent a blissful 10 days looking at temples, kayaking down the Mekong river, playing Monopoly Deal and getting to know one another,' says Lucy. 'It was pretty much perfect. 'I got inundated with love stories while I shared my story on social media, too. I heard from women who travelled to China for a second date and now they've got four kids. I got a message from a woman who flew to Sierra Leone for a second date and ended up married for 30 years before the love of her life passed away. 'I heard so many true love stories that sometimes get silenced by the noise of online dating. It gave me the courage to follow my heart.' Lucy's journey to romance began with that awards ceremony in the capital. 'We ended up bonding over the fact neither of us won and had a couple of drinks,' she says. 'There was definitely a connection but after a first date a few weeks later and a coffee catch-up, I was due to go to Colombia for three months. He suggested we get together before we both went home. 'We decided to go for dinner on a cold Monday. It was miserable, the worst day of the week for a date and we'd both worked really long hours beforehand. But the minute we met, there was suddenly an instant connection and I fancied the pants off him. 'We had a glass of wine or two and he suggested I come to Vietnam to see him while he was there. We both joked about it but after the date we went from texting every day, to calling one another every day, and it started to become slightly less of a joke and a bit more serious. 'I asked my followers on Instagram whether I should travel all the way to Vietnam, where he was, for a fourth date and I was overwhelmed by thousands of them telling me that I absolutely should, so I did. I also reached out to G Adventures, who offered to support my trip. 'Reading the messages I was sent online and seeing that 97 per cent of women on my Instagram told me to go for it, made me realise that it's OK for women to make the effort.' She continues: 'We're not in a fairy-tale narrative waiting for a man to come and rescue us or ask us to dance, we can be brave and chase what we want romantically. 'I arrived in Vietnam for our official fourth date in November and we've been together since then – and I'm the happiest I think I've been.' Brian Young, managing director at G Adventures, says his team were inspired by Lucy's courage to fly halfway across the world for love. 'We knew we knew we were the people to help her on her mission,' he says. Lucy's route took her and her date from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city, on to Bangkok and then sailing to Phuket. 'I know how bizarre it sounds and how intense it seems, but we're so happy and I'm not sure I'd have taken the risk without such support from my social media,' says Lucy. Just Eat delivery man branded 'hero' after 'rescuing' stranded train passengers

Train passengers hoping to spend the day at the beach got stuck on a bridge and were left sweltering in yesterday's heat – but fortunately, respite came in an unlikely form. A Just Eat delivery driver has been labelled a "hero" after coming to the "rescue" of dozens of passengers who had become stranded on a train in the June heatwave. One of those passengers, Lucy Redman, captured the moment she and her fellow travellers were "saved" on board their stalling Thameslink service to Brighton from London. Filming from the motionless train, which appeared to be stuck on a bridge, Lucy expressed her relief as the courier arrived via bicycle below to launch bottles of water towards those suffering in Saturday's (June 21) heat. Impressively, he managed to expertly aim each bottle through open windows to help quench the passengers' thirst. ‌ "Just Eat UK got us, thanks Thameslink for ruining our day trip to Brighton!" Lucy penned in the caption of a video posted to TikTok. "You saved us in 40 degree heat!" ‌ She added: "Give this man a medal. Stranded on train, saved by Just Eat." Writing in response, one TikTok user declared: "This is the best advertising Just Eat could ask for." A second person said: "Just Eat UK this employee of yours deserves a big fat bonus." A third asked: "Did someone actually ordered a Just eat delivery to that location? That's genius!" Meanwhile, a fourth TikTok user quipped: "Can one request a delivery driver with excellent aim? Because this is impressive." ‌ And a fifth person told Just Eat: "You need to reply saying your giving this man the raise and credit he fully deserves. Being stuck on a train in this heat is the worst and he done the most incredible act of throwing them bottles." Thameslink took to X at the time to explain the problem. "Trains are unable to run south from London Blackfriars towards East Croydon/Gatwick/Horsham/Brighton," the company said. "Due to a fault on a train between London Blackfriars and Herne Hill, some lines are blocked. We're working to gather more information on this incident. ‌ "We don't have an exact estimate for delays at this stage, but please allow plenty of extra time. We're organising more ticket acceptance to help with your journey." And in a separate tweet, Thameslink issued advice for those on board: "If you're stuck on a train which isn't moving, please remain where you are and don't make any attempt to leave the train unless instructed to. "We are aware of your location and are working to get you moving as soon as we can. Please listen out for announcements from the driver onboard." Thameslink also provided a link for those affected in which they could apply for a refund via its Delay Repay service for delays of 15 minutes or more. A spokesperson for Govia Thameslink Railway and Network Rail told us of the incident: "Yesterday, a fault on a train near Loughborough Junction brought all services to a halt in the area, three of them outside station platforms. Without power and air conditioning on such a hot day, we pulled all resources from across Sussex and Kent to get personnel on site to safely evacuate passengers as quickly as possible along the track. "This would have been a difficult and uncomfortable experience for our passengers and we are truly sorry. With safety our top priority, the safest place was to remain on the trains while we worked our hardest to get help to those on board."

X Factor star Lucy Spraggan, who has enjoyed a successful career since appearing on the talent show in 2012, has kept a close friendship with music mogul Simon Cowell Lucy Spraggan has said that she has to "go through" Lauren to speak to Simon Cowell, despite him walking her down the aisle. Simon and Lucy have been close ever since she competed on The X Factor back in 2012, but she still doesn't have direct contact with him. Lucy has said that Simon never gets in touch first and when she wants to speak to him, she has to go through his partner Lauren. However, this is due to the fact that Simon doesn't have his own personal mobile phone. ‌ Simon is only contactable through his fiancée Lauren Silverman due to this. Despite not having regular contact over the phone, Lucy said that she and her wife Emilia Smith often stay with Simon and Lauren at their homes in LA and the Cotswolds as well as going on holiday to Barbados. ‌ Lucy told The Sun: "I speak to Lauren all the time. But Simon hasn't got a phone so I speak to him when she's on the phone!" Simon played a big role at Lucy's wedding last year. He walked the singer down the aisle as well as reading a poem at the ceremony. It was during a holiday when Simon was asked by Lucy to do the honour. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, the singer-songwriter said: "It's as nice to have a close bond with anyone. He's just a really remarkable guy, really individual person. "I speak about this a lot, there's a lot of people that have a lot of things to say about him, there's a bit of a mass perception that a lot of people can have and I can only go off the person that I've interacted with and I'll judge someone on their merit and how they've been with me. ‌ "I've had nothing but great times with Simon and had a lot of really important conversations, I think he's a great guy." Lucy was previously married to Georgina Gordon before they went their separate ways in 2019. The two of them talked about wanting to start a family together and they fostered 12 children during their six year marriage. However, Lucy has said now that she doesn't see children being in her future. She said: "I don't want kids. All of my friends that had kids are like, 'Luce - don't do it. I love them, but don't!' "Em has some health issues herself. And, like, I do music and I do my job so that I can experience peace in between. I feel like I couldn't give what I need to give to my career if I had a child, and I wouldn't have any f*****g peace If I had a child. It's dogs, dogs for me."
