I spared Rangers blushes last time they faced Panathinaikos – here is what they can expect this time

Nacho Novo was the hero last time the two sides face so knows what Rangers can expect this time out
Nacho Novo remembers having a close shave the last time Rangers squared off against Panathinaikos - and not just because his goal spared Walter Smith's side the UEFA Cup chop.
The Ibrox cult hero was the saviour back in 2008 when Gers last visited the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.

The Spaniard's late equaliser was enough to secure a 1-1 draw on aggregate and nudge the club a step closer to their brush with glory in that year's Manchester final.

After a goalless draw at Ibrox, Smith's men were on the verge of going out when a screamer from defender Ioannis Goumas put the Greeks ahead in the last 32 showdown.
But Novo - sporting a newly cropped barnet - provided the Light Blues with their hair-raising moment nine minutes from the end as he fired home the crucial finish that saw Rangers progress on away goals.
The striker wasn't the only one who had taken a trip to the barbers having been joined by team-mates Barry Ferguson, Allan McGregor Kris Boyd and Charlie Adam for a pre-match trim.
And Rangers' Hair Bear Bunch ensured it was Rangers who made the Euro cut as they scalped the Athens giants.
Novo told Record Sport: 'The thing I remember about that game is that I had a new haircut. A few of us did.

'Me, Fergie, Greegsy, Boydy and Charlie all went to the barbers in the hotel the day before the game and got our hair shaved short.
'I'm not sure what made us do it but we went for it - and it worked! It must have been a good luck omen.

'It was a crucial goal that season because it was the first game in the UEFA Cup after we'd been knocked out of the Champions League - but it meant we could set off on that incredible journey to Manchester.
'We had a lot of possession but their centre-back scored a wonder goal to give them the lead. He turned and hit one from about 20 yards out, right into the top corner.
'We'd created a lot of chances but didn't put them away. However, we kept our patience and got the goal we needed from a great play. Fergie played the ball out to Chris Burke. His cross came to me and I just hit it.'

Novo lapped up his strike with a raise the roof gesture - with Ibrox legend and then assistant boss Ally McCoist the unlikely inspiration!
'It was an amazing night - apart from the celebration,' explained Nacho. "I got some stick for that one but people don't know what it was about.
'I was actually copying Ally McCoist dancing to 50 Cent before the game! He had been jumping out the dressing room throwing his arms in the air, so that one was for Coisty!

'We were a happy camp in those days. You had Coisty and Durranty in those days and they were always making people laugh.'
There's likely to be a more serious mood next month when Russell Martin's side kick off their Champions League quest against the Shamrock.

The new gaffer will see his side host Pana on July 22-23 before the return in the Greek capital a week later.
Novo has warned today's squad they can expect a red-hot reception at the 16,000-capacity Nikolaidis and it's notorious Gate 13 ultras section - and not just because of the expected 30 degree-plus conditions.
He said: 'It was a loud atmosphere the night we played Panathinaikos, even though the ground isn't the biggest. The fans are right on top of you and make a lot of noise.

'I wouldn't say it was the most crazy atmosphere I experienced. That was at Red Star Belgrade, who we faced that season in the Champions League qualifiers. Their fans were so intimidating. But Panathinaikos was a tough place to go.
'It was a narrow pitch and the fans created a good atmosphere. But we never feared those places because we always took a lot of Rangers fans with us. We had our back-up with those guys behind us.'
And Novo reckons Rangers will need that same passionate support this time round as they face the first of three qualifying hurdles that need to be crossed on the way to the league phase.
He added: 'The new manager won't have much time to get his team ready for such a big game. But everybody needs to get behind Russell.
'He's a young manager and will want to do well at Ibrox. He has the hunger you need to succeed at a club like Rangers. Obviously he knows the demands you get at Ibrox because he served here for a short period as a player.
'It will be a tough game but these qualifiers are always tough. That's when you need to show a strong mentality on the pitch. But I think with everybody working together, we can get a positive result.'

Read more: Rangers return for pre-season on Monday. Manager Russell Martin said: "[The aim is] to work them physically, tactically, to get them to understand what we are demanding very early on and what the team will look like, and hopefully over the next couple of weeks to add a few players to the group, and I think we're all expecting that. "I don't know [exact numbers], but I think we will have a few before the European game, that is for sure. Everyone is working extremely hard, that's what the bulk of the work has been the last week or so, identifying character and talent we want in this building that can add to this group and add to us culturally and performance-wise. I am excited about the people we are starting to look at and will hopefully add." As someone pointed out on X, Hamilton Accies based at Broadwood, formerly Clyde's home, and Clyde playing at New Douglas Park, previously Hamilton's HQ. And only one Saturday 3pm kick off in the top flight on the opening weekend of new season, the thirteenth since the Scottish Professional Football League was established. Welcome back to the crazy world of Scottish football. A new season fixture list that is more of a suggestion than a schedule given the number of games that will likely need to be moved due to European football activities still managed to deliver a variety of talking points, including the new rule which allows all teams involved in European play-off round clashes to request a postponement of their matchday three clash on the weekend of 23/24 August without consulting the opposition. In short, an invitation for some early controversy and quarreling. Delicious! Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Some things though are set in stone. Russell Martin's Rangers revolution will kick off in the league at Motherwell at 5.30pm on Saturday 3 August. At least the pressure won't already be on the Ibrox side – Celtic do not begin their defence of the title until the following afternoon when hosting St Mirren, which – fitness permitting – is when Kieran Tierney is due to make a return to competitive Scottish football. (Photo by Craig Foy / SNS Group) | SNS Group Still, Martin could do with securing an immediate three points, something Rangers haven't done on the opening weekend since defeating Livingston under Giovanni van Bronckhorst in 2022. In each of the last two seasons they have been in catch-up mode following the opening weekend. In both cases they were looking for a new manager before the season was out. Clearly Martin is hoping to buck this trend. Much might depend on what happens between now and the league kick-off when it comes to signings, although whatever happens on that front Rangers' Champions League fate will also be a lot clearer by then. They will either be already out and preparing for a Europa League qualifier or they will have given the Martin era a boost by having overcome Panathinaikos in their Champions League second qualifying round tie. 'We've got a lot of work to do, physically, tactically….the players haven't even been in the building yet, they come back on Monday,' Martin told Sky Sports as he reflected on Rangers' league programme schedule, which one can imagine some fans already taking issue with. 'Monday?! Celtic were back this week!! Idlers. Sack the board!' Note to Rangers supporters: Calm down, Celtic are not back in training and aren't expected to return to Lennoxtown until the start of July. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Delaying bleep tests and the like for a little longer feels very sensible given the sweltering conditions. Still, if it's not an inappropriate image to evoke as Scotland bakes under a pitiless sun, the publication of a new season's set of fixtures is like waking up to find newly fallen snow outside – it will never not enthral. Rangers head coach Russell Martin will hope to improve fortunes at Ibrox following a tough domestic campaign last season. Cr: SNS Group. | SNS Group Away from Rangers and Celtic, who I am contractually obliged to note meet for the first time in the new season on 31 August at Ibrox, Dundee will entertain Hibs at Dens Park - and yes, it's officially back to being called Dens Park – on Sunday 4 August. Steven Pressley's return to top flight Scottish football as manager of the hosts is sure to be a fascinating affair, as much for the reaction of the fans – both sets – as anything. But perhaps the first real box office clash of the new league season is on Monday 4 August at Tynecastle, where Hearts host Aberdeen. This fixture is always one to look out for but new Hearts manager Derek McInnes against his last-but-one team adds some added spice, even if it is a bloody Monday night. Still coming down from the high of a Scottish Cup win, Aberdeen fans might not be bothered about that inconvenience. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It does underline the difficulties when it comes to producing a balanced set of fixtures and one that satisfies everyone in all four divisions, which of course is never possible. The SPFL have worked in conjunction with GotSport, a sports management platform based in the United States. A 'fixture recipe', based on information and restrictions provided by the SPFL, is fed into an obligatory 'supercomputer' and out of it emerges things like East Kilbride v The Spartans, with the two newest SPFL teams meeting on the first Saturday at K-Park. Hearts will begin their league campaign against new manager Derek McInnes' former club Aberdeen. | SNS Group The supercomputer has its work cut out. Even the fact Oasis have reformed ends up having an impact, which is not something the Gallagher brothers probably considered when ending their feud. Due to the band's concert at Murrayfield on the weekend of the second round of fixtures, Hearts have been scheduled to play away – against Dundee United. It is not the only match between Hearts and Dundee United that has been impacted by events at the neighbouring rugby arena. The first meeting of the two clubs at Tynecastle next season will be played on Sunday, November 9 due to the Autumn Test between Scotland and New Zealand taking place at Murrayfield on the Saturday. Hamza Igamane must be sold by Rangers after transfer intel leak as 49ers 'refresh' requires major jolt

The Moroccan striker is said to boast suitors in the Premier League including Everton Rangers new owners should cash in on Hamza Igamane this summer to fund a summer rebuild at Ibrox. That is according to Pat Nevin - who reckons that the American revolution at Ibrox could need more spending power with Lyall Cameron the only new face in the building so far. The Moroccan has impressed during his first season in the Scottish Premiership netting 16 goals after a £1.7million arrival from AS FAR. Just 12 months on, the 22-year-old has been linked with the likes of Everton, Tottenham, West Ham, Newcastle United, Bournemouth, Brentford and Fulham - with Premier League scouts reportedly on red alert. It comes after Nevin claimed the Light Blues would be doing "really well" to dethrone Celtic this season after hearing intel about the figures that would be spent in the summer window. And he reckons Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises must green light to sale to kickstart Russell Martin's squad overhaul if the likes of Everton come calling as the former Southampton boss looks to put his own stamp on the squad. Speaking to jackpot slots, the former Toffees' frontman said: "Is Hamza Igamane going to set fire to the Premier League? No. It's not like someone will be signing the next Eden Hazard. "I do think he's capable of doing a job for someone in the middle region of the division but that's probably it. "In Rangers' situation, where you've got to sign five or six players this summer, you could do with the money. 'I suppose with new owners, it means there will be a bit more available to Russell Martin but sometimes, even though you're desperate to keep one player, selling them means you can sign four more. "That's the sort of situation Rangers currently find themselves in. "It wouldn't show a lack of ambition if they sell Igamane or anything like that. It can actually help them refresh the squad and start this new era."
