BREAKING NEWS Baseball star suffers medical emergency on the field as extreme heat wreaks havoc
Two Major League Baseball stars had to receive emergency medical treatment on the field after suffering heat-related illnesses on Saturday afternoon.
Cincinnati Reds superstar Elly De La Cruz and Seattle Mariners reliever Trent Thornton both fell foul of extreme weather as temperatures closed in on 100 degrees across the US.
De La Cruz, 23, vomited on the field in the fourth inning of the Reds' loss in St Louis, before trainers rushed to assist him.
Incredibly, he managed to carry on - and even went on to hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
'I actually watched him,' Reds manager Terry Francona explained after the game. 'He [De La Cruz] drank a bunch of water. I mean a bunch... and then he went right out and got rid of it.'
Thornton, meanwhile, suffered a 'scary' moment on the mound and had to be helped back to the dugout by trainers.
The Mariners manager, Dan Wilson, later opened up on the 'heat-related illness', explaining to reporters: 'He battled hard. It was a scary moment for sure. But just really glad that he's feeling a little bit better now and should be OK.'
Seattle were playing against the Cubs in Chicago on Saturday afternoon, where temperatures hit 94f at first pitch.
In St Louis, meanwhile, it was 92 degrees during the game, and another game was even worse, with Milwaukee at Minnesota played under an 'excessive heat warning'.
Temperatures are only set to get worse this week, with New York tipping 100f on Tuesday - the day the Mets host the Braves at Citi Field.

Real Madrid star Antonio Rudiger accuses Pachuca opponent of racist insult as referee enforces new Fifa protocol
REAL MADRID star Antonio Rudiger accused opponent Gustavo Cabral of making a racist remark during last night's Club World Cup match. The Spanish giants took on Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte. 2 2 With Real leading 3-1 late on, Rudiger claimed that Cabral had fouled him. The pair were subsequently involved in a heated exchange. Rudiger, 32, alleged to referee Ramon Abatti Abel that he had been racially abused. Abatti subsequently instigated Fifa 's anti-racism protocol. Step one of the protocol sees a match stopped - with steps two and three leading to games being suspended and then abandoned. Cabral, 39, denied making a racist remark - claiming that he had called Rudiger a "coward". The match soon got back underway, with Real Madrid winning 3-1. More arguments between players followed after the final whistle. After the game, Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso came to Rudiger's defence. The Spaniard, 43, said: "Toni has informed us about something. Real Madrid open their Club World Cup campaign with draw against Saudi minnows "We have to wait and see now. I think the Fifa protocol has been activated to investigate. "But if something did happen measures need to be taken and we support Antonio because this is something unacceptable. "There's no tolerance for this at any level of football and whenever it occurs measures must be taken. "That's what Antonio has told us and we believe him." Cabral came out to deny racially abusing the German. The veteran defender said: "It was a fight. We collided. "He said that I hit him with my hand, and then there was an argument and the referee made the racism sign, but I was telling him the same thing the whole time." Pachuca boss Jaime Lozano was coy on the incident. The Mexican, 46, said: "I haven't spoken to Cabral about this. "I cannot give you an explanation about it because this is the first [I've heard of] this news. "It cannot be justified at all. I've known him for a little while and and I have never heard of something like that with Pachuca players. "I cannot defend my captain at any cost but I will talk about it with him." Real Madrid had gone down to 10 men after just seven minutes, when Raul Asencio was sent off for bringing down ex-West Brom and Everton striker Salomon Rondon. Nevertheless, the LaLiga giants took the lead on 35 minutes through Jude Bellingham, before Arda Guler made it 2-0 before half-time. Fede Valverde added a third 20 minutes from time, with Elias Montiel grabbing a consolation for Pachuca. The Mexican side have been eliminated after losing both of their matches, while Real Madrid sit atop Group H with four points.

Antonio Rudiger claims he was racially abused in Club World Cup clash
Antonio Rudiger has claimed he was racially abused during Real Madrid's Club World Cup victory over Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday. Xabi Alonso confirmed a complaint had been made after an incident towards the end of the Spanish giants' 3-1 victory in Charlotte. Rudiger had clashed with Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral in injury time but it was not clear if the alleged abuse came from a player or someone in the crowd. "That's what Rudiger said, and we believe him," Alonso told reporters in his post-match press conference. "It is important to have zero tolerance in these kinds of situations. Fifa now is investigating. That's all I can say." Fifa, the world governing body and tournament organiser, has not commented but referee Ramon Abatti had crossed his arms in front of his chest, which signals the activation of the anti-racism protocol. It comes after Fifa were criticised by campaigners for dropping its anti-racism messaging at the Club World Cup, something they were forced to U-turn ahead of Real's opener against Al-Hilal. Real had shrugged off the early sending off of Raul Asencio to claim a victory that took them to the top of Group H. Asencio was dismissed in the seventh minute for hauling down Salomon Rondon - another blow for Alonso's side with striker Kylian Mbappe still missing through illness. But after soaking up a spell of pressure, Real broke the deadlock through Jude Bellingham in the 35th minute before Arda Guler doubled the lead. Federico Valverde volleyed in a third with 20 minutes left before the Mexicans grabbed a late consolation through Elias Montiel's deflected effort. It was Real's first win of the tournament and took them level on four points with Red Bull Salzburg, who played out a goalless draw with Al Hilal in Washington DC. Real play Salzburg in their final game of the first stage on Thursday night (2am Friday UK) but, with Al Hilal just two points behind, the group is wide open.

Ilkay Gundogan unhappy with ‘slow' Man City despite six-goal romp
Manchester City racked up six goals, one of which came out of the top drawer, and two of their full debutants put on impressive displays, but not everyone boarding their flight back to Florida on Sunday night was happy with the evening's events. Following City's 6-0 win over Al Ain, Ilkay Gundogan lamented the slow build-up play of his team and their failure to score more goals. 'We wanted a seventh goal,' Gundogan, the 34-year-old midfielder, said. 'But we were too slow and that is something that shouldn't have happened. It doesn't make sense. Even in the first half there were short periods where we were not that precise in terms of our passing and the way we played. 'It's something we need to observe and get better at because at the highest level you should not allow yourself to be not good for such a long time. It felt quite long to be honest. It felt at least five or ten minutes too long in terms of the standards we have.'
