Super Bowl: Strabane piper scores TV touchdown with advert
Kendrick Lamar wasn't the only musical star showcasing their talents during the Super Bowl, one man from County Tyrone also had his music played to the many millions tuning in from around the globe.Chris McMullan, who is an uilleann piper from Strabane, said it was the "highlight of his career" to have his music featured in an advert starring Irish actor Barry Keoghan during the game's TV coverage.The 30-second advert for US firm Squarespace, which pays homage to The Banshees Of Inisherin film, ran between the first and second quarters of Sunday's Super Bowl LIX.The game saw the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, to deny them an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl.
The advert sees Keoghan, depicting his Banshees character Dominic Kearney, riding a donkey that is meandering along on a path in rural Ireland while he tosses laptops out of a satchel to bemused islanders.Speaking to BBC News NI, Mr McMullan said he was overjoyed that his rendition of the 'Limerick Lament' was used for the advert.
Chris has been playing the uilleann pipes for many years, and said he also enjoys playing the flute and tin-whistles.The uilleann pipes, also known as Union pipes or Irish pipes, have been played for centuries and are a beloved instrument in Irish traditional music.He said "out of the blue" he received an email asking if his music could be used for a Super Bowl advertisement.
'I thought it was a scam email at first'
"I was working on a cruise ship at the time," Chris explained. "The email came through at about 05:30 in the the morning and the email heading was something like: 'Can we use your music for a Superbowl advert?'"I thought surely that's a spam email so I ignored it, but then a second email came through and then after two days a third email arrived. "At that point I was like OK and checked it out, they showed me all their credentials and I checked them out and then, once I was convinced they were like the real deal, went for it."Chris said the song they asked to use was actually recorded in his house and all done using a standard microphone. "The song is called the Limerick Lament and it's from 1607, so it's been around awhile," he said."They just seemed to go for it because it was the sound they were after."
Hit the hay before the first play
Asked if he stayed up to watch his Super Bowl debut, Chris said that unfortunately jet lag got the better of him and he was unable to stay awake to witness it play out live to a global audience. "I was flying back from the Caribbean after working on the cruise ship and I was absolutely wrecked," he said."I tried my very best to stay up, but I just couldn't."So many people though, friends and family, all recorded it for me and I also managed to watch it back on the re-runs so that's something."The response has been incredible and I'm just really proud of it."Chris said since the advert aired, he has received so many messages asking about the uilleann pipes and said he was delighted to help highlight the instrument.

O hAnnaidh, 27, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, was bailed until later in the summer — leaving him free to play at Glastonbury. Asked by The Sun on Sunday if he thinks Kneecap should play, the PM, left, said: 'No I don't. 'I think we need to come down really clearly on this. I won't say too much, because there's a court case on, but I don't think that's appropriate.' The Belfast group are due to play the West Holts Stage on Saturday. Bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh have supported O hAnnaidh. They said at court: 'For anybody going to Glastonbury, you can see us there at 4pm on Saturday. 'If you can't be there we'll be on the BBC. Most importantly: free, free Palestine.' The BBC last night faced pressure not to air Kneecap's set, after Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: 'It should not be rewarding extremism.' A spokesman for the broadcaster said: 'Decisions on our output will be made in the lead up to the festival.'

Kneecap Glastonbury Festival slot slammed by Keir Starmer as 'not appropriate'
The UK PM blasted Kneecap's upcoming Glastonbury performance, after the Irish rappers were axed from Glasgow's TRNSMT festival last month Kneecap's upcoming Glastonbury Festival performance is not "appropriate" according to Sir Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister made the comments following rapper Liam Og O hAnnaidh's appearance in court on Wednesday on a terrorism charge after allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November. In an interview with The Sun, Sir Keir was asked if he thought the trio should perform at Glastonbury, to which he replied: 'No, I don't, and I think we need to come down really clearly on this. 'This is about the threats that shouldn't be made, I won't say too much because there's a court case on, but I don't think that's appropriate.' It comes after Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said she thought the BBC 'should not be showing' Kneecap's performance at the festival next week. Mrs Badenoch said in an X post, which was accompanied by an article from The Times that claimed the BBC had not banned the group: 'The BBC should not be showing Kneecap propaganda. 'One Kneecap band member is currently on bail, charged under the Terrorism Act. 'As a publicly funded platform, the BBC should not be rewarding extremism.' Last month, the Irish rap group was axed from the line up of Glasgow music festival TRNSMT amid safety fears. The trio - made up of O Hannaigh, known as Mo Chara, JJ Ó Dochartaigh, known as aDJ Provai, and Naoise O Caireallain, known as Moglai Bap - are no longer set to play Glasgow Green on Friday, July 11 due to concerns over the safety of the event. Police Scotland had previously said the performance at Glasgow Green in July would require "a significant policing operation". Kneecap were also criticised over 2023 gig footage that appeared to show a band member saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP." The band posted a statement on X on May 28 which read: "Due to concerns expressed by the Police about safety at the event, Kneecap can no longer perform at TRNSMT. "To the thousands of people who bought tickets, flights and hotels to see us play, we are is out of our hands. Glasgow has always been a huge city for us. "We've played there many many times, with no issues - ever. Make of that what you will." The Tory Leader of the Opposition has previously called for the group to be banned from Glastonbury, and last year Kneecap won a discrimination case against the UK Government in Belfast High Court after she tried to refuse them a £14,250 funding award when she was a minister. Kneecap took aim at Mrs Badenoch in their latest single, The Recap, released just before their headline set at London's Wide Awake festival in May, with the song mocking the politician's attempts to block their arts funding and the Conservative Party's election loss. On Wednesday, O hAnnaidh was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with his bandmates at Westminster Magistrates' Court in 'Free Mo Chara' T-shirts. During the proceedings, a prosecutor told the court the 27-year-old is 'well within his rights' to voice his opinions on Israel and Palestine, but the alleged incident at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, is a 'wholly different thing'. O hAnnaidh was released on unconditional bail until his next hearing at the same court on August 20. Following the hearing, the rapper said: 'For anybody going to Glastonbury, you can see us there at 4pm on the Saturday. 'If you can't be there we'll be on the BBC, if anybody watches the BBC. We'll be at Wembley in September. 'But most importantly: free, free Palestine.' The charge came following a counter-terrorism police investigation after the historical gig footage came to light, which also allegedly shows the group calling for the deaths of MPs. In April, Kneecap apologised to the families of murdered MPs but said footage of the incident had been 'exploited and weaponised'. In an initial post in response to the charge, Kneecap said: '14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us. 'We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves, this is political policing, this is a carnival of distraction. 'We are not the story, genocide is, as they profit from genocide, they use an 'anti-terror law' against us for displaying a flag thrown on stage. A charge not serious enough to even warrant their crown court, instead a court that doesn't have a jury. What's the objective? 'To restrict our ability to travel. To prevent us speaking to young people across the world. To silence voices of compassion. To prosecute artists who dare speak out. 'Instead of defending innocent people, or the principles of international law they claim to uphold, the powerful in Britain have abetted slaughter and famine in Gaza, just as they did in Ireland for centuries. Then, like now, they claim justification. 'The IDF units they arm and fly spy plane missions for are the real terrorists, the whole world can see it.' Formed in 2017, the group are known for their provocative lyrics in both Irish and English and their merchandise. Their best-known tracks include Get Your Brits Out, Better Way To Live, featuring Grian Chatten from Fontaines DC, and 3Cag. A BBC spokesperson said: 'As the broadcast partner, the BBC will be bringing audiences extensive music coverage from Glastonbury, with artists booked by the festival organisers. 'Whilst the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans will ensure that our programming will meet our editorial guidelines. Decisions about our output will be made in the lead-up to the festival.' Bill Belichick sheds new light on Jordon Hudson romance in leaked emails after disastrous CBS interview
Bill Belichick 's attempts to defend his relationship with Jordon Hudson and his disastrous interview with CBS have been laid bare in emails that emerged Friday. The legendary NFL coach, 73, is preparing for his first season in college football but his tenure has been so far overshadowed by headlines surrounding his romance with Hudson, 24. A string of explosive reports have emerged over recent weeks, in the wake of a humiliating interview with CBS, when Hudson shut down questions about the start of their relationship. The clip went viral and sparked fresh speculation surrounding Hudson's influence over the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach. One clip of her at UNC practice caused a particular headache for the legendary coach and soon reports emerged that she had been banned from the team's facilities. UNC denied that was the case. Now emails obtained by WRAL detail the fallout from the CBS interview. They show that disgruntled fans felt the relationship was turning the school into a 'laughing stock'. In the emails, however, Belichick defended Hudson and their romance. 'Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship,' Belichick wrote to Beth Keith, a senior associate vice chancellor in the Office of University Communications. 'This is not a secret... Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (E.G. CBS 60 Minutes) to her. 'Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it.' He also explained why his young girlfriend was at the interview, which was organized to promote his new book: 'The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football.' 'Jordon was present at the CBS interview because David Kass, the Simon & Schuster publicist, was not there,' Belichick claimed. 'I included Jordon in the book acknowledgments because she was a creative contributor to the book, including having the idea for formatting the 4 special pages in the book.' According to WRAL News, however, Hudson intended to sit in on the April 21 interview regardless of whether Kass was there. Belichick defended his girlfriend's interruption and accused CBS of setting up a 'secret' camera to capture her input. 'I met Jordon randomly on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021. That is no secret. Jordon was not dodging the specific question regarding how we met, but rather was preventing the interview from continuing to probe into personal matters,' Belichick wrote. The 73-year-old also claimed, per WRAL, that at the start of the interview Hudson asked where she could sit 'off-camera' but 'secretly, CBS had a camera focused on Jordon where Lead producer Gabe (Gabriel Falcon) instructed her to sit.' He added: 'For approximately 35 uninterrupted minutes, (CBS host Tony Dokoupil) asked questions about the book... then, the questions shifted to other subjects that were not related to the Art of Winning, which we had outlined as off-limits with my book publicist.' WRAL also revealed an email from a disgruntled UNC fan and former student who said they have 'never felt compelled to write a letter to our leadership, until now. I'm writing in response to the actions taken by Bill Belichick and his 24 year old girlfriend.'
