York co-owner calls for immediate reform of National League promotion structure
The Minstermen missed out on a return to the Football League as they lost in the play-off semi-finals to Oldham, having finished second in the league table behind champions Barnet, 28 points clear of the final play-off position.
In February, the National League launched the '3UP campaign' with the aim of securing three promotion places to League Two for the 2025/26 season.
Unjust Promotion Rules – A Call for Immediate Reform

But Uggla has called for 'an immediate review, temporary relief measures, or an accelerated implementation of the '3UP' model' with the intention of York earning instant promotion to League Two.
In an open letter to the National League and the EFL chief executive Trevor Birch, she said: 'I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment at the current promotion system between the National League and League Two, following a season where York City FC, despite finishing 28 points clear of seventh place and winning 12 more matches, were denied promotion.
'Such a glaring imbalance not only undermines sporting merit but erodes the very foundations of fair competition.
'To dominate a league campaign so comprehensively (Barnet the only exception), only to be forced into a play-off lottery, is structurally unjust.

'It penalises excellence and rewards inferiority in a way no professional league system should condone.
'While I am aware of the historical basis for the two-up structure, it is no longer fit for purpose.
'The gap between the top National League clubs and the lower EFL clubs has narrowed, and in many cases reversed, making the case for three-up promotion beyond compelling.
'The '3UP' campaign rightly reflects the sentiment of every National League club and countless supporters.
'But waiting until 2025–26 only deepens the injustice for clubs like York City, who have already paid the price for a system built on outdated assumptions.
'I urge both governing bodies to urgently consider transitional reform, whether via immediate review, temporary relief measures, or an accelerated implementation of the '3UP' model.
🗣️ 'You've got to give these teams in the National League a chance. Things have to change."

'At the very least, this season's outcome should provoke an honest re-evaluation of what fairness in football truly means.
'For clubs, fans, and the integrity of the English football pyramid, it is time to reward merit and restore credibility to the system.'
Oldham returned to the Football League after they beat Southend 3-2 after extra time in the play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.
Uggla added: 'I would also like to point out that writing this letter should not undermine the achievements of Oldham Atletic from their victory at Wembley yesterday, and to Southend United for making the final. Their accomplishments should not go unnoticed.
'Too many great clubs, including Oldham and Southend, have fallen into this league with little chance of redemption due to the lack of promotion places.
'The current system is simply not sustainable anymore.'

EFL Championship: How long since Wrexham played these clubs?
Phil Parkinson's men finished runners-up in League One last term to secure an historic third successive promotion. Back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years, Wrexham will come up against some familiar faces but there are also new opponents for Reds fans to look forward to facing. There are three teams - Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough and West Brom - that the north Wales club, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have never faced in a league encounter. However, Wrexham secured a 2-1 victory over Ipswich, then a Premier League outfit, in an FA Cup third round tie at The Racecourse in 1995 with Keiron Durkan and Gary Bennett getting the goals to set up a trip to Manchester United. And four years later at the same stage of the competition, Brian Flynn's Reds caused another upset by beating Middlesbrough - another top-flight side - by the same score at the iconic north Wales stadium with Robin Gibson and Darren Ferguson finding the net against big-spending Boro. Cup surprises were the norm for Wrexham, led by Karl Connolly and co, in the 1990s under Flynn. Watching on from the Kop, I always felt that the Reds would come out on top when they faced higher division opponents. Although they faced some tough times following relegation from the EFL, Wrexham have climbed the football pyramid at a rapid rate since the high profile takeover of the club and now they will be facing the likes of Ipswich and Boro on a weekly basis next season. You have to go even further back to when Wrexham played West Brom in a regional league competition which does not count in official records. The 1941-42 campaign was a special wartime season in England and Wrexham lost 6-4 at the Baggies before drawing 5-5 at home in another high-scoring clash. It is 65 years since the last time Wrexham faced Southampton in a league game. The Reds beat the Saints 2-1 at The Racecourse in the 1959-60 season after losing 3-0 at The Dell in the old Division Three, although the teams met in a two-legged League Cup tie back in 1979 with Southampton winning 8-0 on aggregate. I was just a young boy then but I fondly remember the last time Wrexham played Coventry City! Parkinson's men - then in the National League - caused yet another FA Cup shock when they won 4-3 at Coventry in the third round of the FA Cup in January 2023. The promotion push was the priority but the Reds produced a brilliant performance to win against the second tier Sky Blues with Sam Dalby, Elliot Lee, Tom O'Connor and Paul Mullin getting the goals. The teams last met in the league in 1963-64, but the other teams in the Championship have faced Wrexham more recently. Blackburn Rovers, Derby County, Leicester City and Norwich City were opponents in 1981-82 - the Reds' last campaign in the old second division. But there has been an FA Cup encounter with Blackburn as recently as 2024 when Andy Cannon put Wrexham ahead in front of 7,000 travelling supporters at Ewood Park before Rovers turned things around to triumph 4-1 while Derby beat the Reds 3-1 in the competition back in 2007 - Denis Smith's last game as manager. Portsmouth and Sheffield United were Division Three opponents in 1982-83, although the Reds have enjoyed some pulsating cup ties against the Blades during the Reynolds/McElhenney regime. Fresh after knocking out Coventry, the Reds were heading for the FA Cup fifth round in 2023 but United scored a last gasp equaliser to draw 3-3 at The Racecourse before winning the replay 3-1 after bagging two late goals in Yorkshire. The last time Watford and Preston North End were league opponents was during the 1997-98 and 1999-2000 campaigns respectively, with David Moyes in charge at Deepdale where the Reds played out a goal-less draw. Wrexham haven't faced Millwall since 2000-01 when Craig Faulconbridge scored in a 1-1 draw at The Racecourse. The Reds last went head-to-head with Stoke City in 2001-02 but met in an FA Cup tie in 2015 when Mark Carrington put Kevin Wilkin's side ahead but the then Premier League side - managed by Wales and Wrexham-born legend Mark Hughes - hit back to win 3-1. There will be a Welsh derby with Swansea City to look forward to next season. The last meeting was in 2002-03 when the Reds won promotion from Division Three. Wrexham and Queens Park Rangers haven't met since 2003-04, the season before Hull City, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday were opponents when the Reds went into administration and suffered relegation from League One, but they did have EFL Trophy success to celebrate that campaign with a win over Southend United in the final at The Millennium Stadium. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS However, Smith guided his Reds side to a League Cup win against the Owls in August 2006 at Hillsborough - the biggest stadium Wrexham will visit next season. There is one club - Oxford United - who Wrexham actually faced during the 15-year non-league nightmare. The sides met during the 2009-10 campaign when Oxford won both games 1-0 on route to clinching promotion, and they also triumphed 2-1 in an FA Cup match in 2013. Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic were both opponents last season when Wrexham sealed promotion from League One. The 3-0 win against Charlton in April at The Racecourse proved to be a memorable occasion as goals from Sam Smith (2) and Ollie Rathbone ensured Wrexham went straight up for a third year in a row behind big-spending champions Birmingham, with the Addicks joining the duo after winning the play-off final.

Liverpool youngster sends message to senior England stars after Spain triumph
England Under-21s knocked out tournament favourites Spain with a belligerent display in their Euros U21 quarter-final, with Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton playing a key role Tyler Morton reckons England U21s laid down a marker for future Three Lions sides after knocking out tournament favourites Spain and setting up a European Championship semi-final against the Netherlands. England showed a newfound attacking balance in their last eight-win over Spain as things finally clicked in front of goal for the defending champions. Morton, making his first start of the tournament, delivered a dogged performance in midfield. Sunday's spectacular showing was a far cry from last summer's senior Euros heartbreak against Spain when Mikel Oyarzabal's 86th-minute strike guaranteed a 60th year of hurt. And after the kids showed how it's done, Morton pointed out the rarity of an English side bossing the Spanish. 'It was very tough,' Morton said after the 3-1 win over Spain. 'They're a top side. When you come into games like this, you know how good they are. The movement is top – they're top-level players. 'We outplayed them, especially in the first half. We showed a real fight and desire to play and move. Dominating a Spanish team for most of the game is not what all English teams do. 'We controlled a huge chunk of it and then we had to manage things, which we did. We were very comfortable off the ball. 'We've shown a different side to how we can play. We were very comfortable in and out of possession. They're a top team, a threat, but we minimised that. We got exactly what we deserved. 'That's props to all the lads, not only the centre-halves but the forwards who were pressing constantly; everyone deserves plaudits tonight. This is a very special team.' The 22-year-old Liverpool midfielder will be forced to sit out Wednesday's semi-final in Bratislava after picking up his second booking of the tournament for a lunge on Beñat Turrientes. 'I'm gutted. I didn't know [about the suspension] until after the game. I was just really in the zone. I don't think it was a yellow card, but it's gone. I've got to just prepare myself now for what could be. "I'll be right behind the lads the whole game.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Bayern Munich consider hijacking £50m Chelsea transfer after Florian Wirtz snub
Chelsea wanted to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens in time for this summer's Club World Cup but now Blues boss Enzo Maresca could have more problems in getting his man Chelsea could see their move for Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens hijacked by Bayern Munich. Gittens, 20, has already reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea over a seven-year contract but they're are yet to meet Dortmund's £50million asking price. The Blues made two bids earlier this month, the second being worth £42m, but both were flatly rejected by the German giants. Chelsea had hoped to sign the English winger before the start of the Club World Cup, with both sides competing at the tournament. Now Bayern, who are also competing in the USA, have joined the race, having missed out on No.1 target Florian Wirtz. The Bundesliga champions want to sign a new winger, with Leroy Sane having rejected a new contract before moving to Galatasaray. French newspaper L'Equipe report that Bayern have already made contract with Dortmund and Gittens' representatives. The former Manchester City academy prospect moved to Germany in 2020 and enjoyed his most prolific season to date last term. Gittens' 12 goals and three assists helped Dortmund recover from a nightmare first half of the campaign, leading to the sacking of Nuri Sahin. However, 20-year-old has been less prominent under new manager Nico Kovac. Gittens has only played 13 minutes across Dortmund's two games at the Club World Cup, with BVB anticipating more offers after the conclusion of the tournament. Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl explained when asked about Chelsea's interest: "In the end, we didn't come to an agreement on Jamie because we have different ideas about the player's current value. "But the talks were very, very respectful. We have been in very good dialogue with Chelsea for many years. And yet we have a different point of view and are happy that Jamie will now be part of our team at the Club World Cup and are delighted that he is staying. Which club should Jamie Gittens join - Chelsea or Bayern Munich? Let us know your pick in the comments section. "I'm not responsible for the late offer, but of course I still have to deal with it and that's what weve done. Let's see how things develop in the future." Ex-BVB captain Kehl later told Fussball Transfers: "We've spoken with Jamie recently. He's mature enough to know he must perform. That's just who he is. Jamie will be vital for us in this tournament, and we'll see what the future holds afterward." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
