Judgment to be handed down in murders of 2 Boksburg North cops
Judgment is expected to be handed down tomorrow in the Johannesburg High Court to two men accused of the October 2022 murders of Boksburg North police officers Sergeant Vusi Batsha (45) and Constable Kgotso Malahlela (24).
Boksburg Advertiser reports that the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) secured a guilty verdict against Hlulani Mabuza (32) and Sihle Ntuli (29) in the Johannesburg High Court on April 9.
They are facing two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Batsha and Malahlela were ambushed while attending an inquest on the corner of Field and Main Reef Road, Lilianton, just before 22:00 on October 21, 2022.
The suspects demanded their service firearms, leading to a fatal struggle. Batsha was shot dead at the scene. Malahlela, while seeking cover, was fatally shot moments later. Both service firearms were stolen.
Breakthrough
According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, swift action and intelligence gathering led to a breakthrough on April 22, 2023.
'DPCI SOCI, in collaboration with Gauteng Special Law Enforcement officials, arrested Mabuza and two accomplices at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.
'Though their initial court appearance for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on the roll, the SOCI team's prompt re-arrest ensured their detention,' said Ramovha.
He added that the police apprehended Ntuli on May 24, 2023, at Harrismith Correctional Services in the Free State following detailed investigations.
His interrogation yielded critical information linking him to the crime scene.
'Through exhaustive efforts, investigators built an unassailable case that culminated in justice for the fallen officers,' the spokesperson added.
Justice
Acting provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Brigadier Phumeza Klaas, lauded the SOCI team's relentless commitment to justice.
She also thanked the metro police department and Gauteng Traffic for their invaluable support during the arrests.
'This verdict brings solace to the families of Sergeant Batsha and Constable Malahlela and reaffirms our unwavering dedication to dismantling organised crime and safeguarding our communities,' Klaas said.

Hijacked vehicle recovered within a day in Adams Mission
A HIJACKED vehicle was recovered by Blue Security's tactical officers in the Adams Mission area on June 18. The Isuzu bakkie, which was reported hijacked earlier that day, prompted the driver's vehicle tracking company to send an urgent request for assistance from Blue Security. Also read: Adams Mission man arrested for possession of two AK-47s and a pistol Idan Smollan, Blue Security community manager, said, 'According to the driver, he was forced to pull over when suspects in a maroon Suzuki seven-seater pointed firearms at him. Two suspects then exited their vehicle and entered the Isuzu, forcing the driver to sit in the middle seat while one of the suspects drove off with the vehicle. The hijackers parked the bakkie on a nearby gravel road, where they offloaded stock from the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver was not physically harmed. The suspects fled the scene in the maroon Suzuki, taking the driver's cellphone but leaving the vehicle key behind.' With the tracking information provided, the vehicle was located and secured. Members of the tracking company arrived shortly after, and the vehicle was handed over to KwaMakhutha SAPS for further investigation. 'This incident underscores the importance of co-ordinated action between private security and tracking services in quickly recovering hijacked vehicles and ensuring the safety of victims,' said Smollan. Gunshots fired at loose baboon in Northcliff
According Bhaai Cassim, the secretary for the Johannesburg Sub-District Community Police Board stated that the baboon is now at the Northcliff Eco Ridge area which he is likely to overnight. 'The OWL Rescue Centre has confirmed that a trap is being set up nearby, close to a residence that the baboon has been frequenting several times over the last 24 hours.' 'The incident was reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), who responded to investigate but were unable to find the exact location of the shots.' Dirke Engelbrecht from Community Lead Animal Welfare (CLAW) emphasised the urgency of the situation, labeling the shooting as 'totally unnecessary.' He reassured the community that there is no aggression or threat from the baboon. 'There may be passing over of a property, but there is no indication of a threat or danger,' Engelbrecht explained. He cautioned that such actions are criminal offenses, and anyone found responsible could face prosecution under conservation and animal cruelty laws.
