Iraq deploys Pantsir air defense systems to protect vital sites, adjusts military alert level

Iraqi News5 days ago

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq is deploying advanced Pantsir air defense systems to protect sensitive and vital locations across the country in a precautionary move, according to security sources on Sunday (June 15, 2025). The directive was reportedly issued by Defence Minister Thabet Al-Abbasi.
Commander of Air Defence, Lt. Gen. Maan Ghaleb Al-Asadi, stated that the movement of air defense systems is a natural and routine procedure to protect Iraq's airspace and vital targets against any emergency. Circulating video footage appeared to show Pantsir batteries moving to designated sites in Maysan.
In a parallel development, MP Iskandar Watout of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee announced that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has approved lowering the general military alert level and reducing troop presence percentages, effective Monday, June 16th.
Watout noted that while the alert level is being reduced, operational commanders will retain authority for situational assessment and must maintain utmost caution and readiness. The moves suggest a strategic recalibration of Iraq's security posture.

US Embassy reaffirms commitment to Iraq amid regional tensions

Baghdad ( – The United States Embassy in Baghdad has confirmed that its operations, as well as those of the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, remain unchanged despite the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel that has placed Iraq in a delicate position at the heart of regional tensions. In a statement issued today, the Embassy said: 'The operating status of Embassy Baghdad and Consulate General Erbil is unchanged. The U.S. remains strongly committed to advancing our policy priorities in Iraq, strengthening Iraq's sovereignty, and engaging with Iraqi leaders and the Iraqi people.' The reaffirmation comes as the Iran-Israel conflict enters its second week, with a series of strikes exchanged between the two rivals raising fears of a broader regional escalation. Iraq, which maintains close ties with both the United States and Iran, has found itself in an increasingly precarious position, geographically and diplomatically, as its airspace and territory have come under scrutiny amid the tensions. Despite the volatility in neighboring countries, Iraq has remained largely stable since the outbreak of hostilities. While U.S. military installations in Iraq were reportedly targeted by drones early in the conflict, no major disruptions or escalations have followed. The Embassy's statement appears intended to reassure both Iraqi citizens and international observers of continued diplomatic engagement and support for Iraq's sovereignty during this sensitive time. U.S. officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of Iraq's stability and role in regional security.

Arab ministers meet in Istanbul at Iraq's request over Iran-Israel conflict

Istanbul ( – Arab foreign ministers convened in Istanbul on Friday for an emergency meeting requested by Iraq to address the escalating Iran-Israel conflict and its potential impact on regional stability. The meeting came ahead of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit scheduled for the weekend and focused on the ongoing air war, which began on June 13 when Israel launched strikes, claiming Iran was nearing nuclear weapons capability. Tehran responded with immediate retaliatory attacks, marking the most serious confrontation between the two rivals to date. The Istanbul talks aimed to form a unified Arab position on the crisis and explore ways to contain further escalation. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate talks in Geneva with his British, French, and German counterparts before joining the broader OIC discussions.

Iraq condemns escalating violence in Gaza

Baghdad ( — The Iraqi government has strongly denounced what it described as the continued crimes being carried out by the Israeli military in Gaza, calling on the international community to take decisive action in response to the growing humanitarian crisis. In a statement issued by government spokesman Basim Alawadi, Iraq reiterated its firm condemnation of the targeting of Palestinians and the systematic obstruction of humanitarian aid deliveries to the besieged enclave. 'More than seventy martyrs have fallen and hundreds have been wounded in the past 24 hours alone,' Alawadi said, referring to ongoing Israeli bombardments. 'Among these were disgraceful crimes committed against desperate civilians gathered at aid distribution points, seeking food for hundreds of thousands of families deprived of life's most basic needs.' Iraq holds the international community responsible for its failure to address the root causes of the conflict. The statement cited the global inaction on establishing a political solution based on the Palestinian people's right to their historic homeland as a key factor enabling continued aggression. Baghdad reiterated its support for a just and comprehensive solution grounded in international law and UN resolutions, particularly the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. It warned that any alternative path that ignores these principles will only prolong regional instability. In addition to its political stance, Iraq demanded the immediate and unhindered entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and condemned the use of starvation as a method of warfare.
