Dominican Journalist Ángel Martínez Facing Travel Restrictions Despite Closed Case
MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES, June 11, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- Legal representatives for Dominican journalist and licensed private investigator Ángel Ramón de Jesús Martínez Jiménez have filed motions in Dominican court seeking the immediate lifting of travel restrictions imposed after his detention on May 26, 2025 at sea leaving the port of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
Martínez, a well-known investigative content creator behind the YouTube channel Detective Ángel, was detained while aboard the MSC World America cruise ship. The arrest occurred despite the fact that the legal matter cited in his detention — Expediente No. 503-2020-EPRI-00545 — was formally closed on November 12, 2024, by the Ninth Criminal Chamber of the Criminal Court of the Distrito Nacional.
The court ruling, referenced under Sentencia No. 047-2024-SSEN-00171, declared the action extinguished, lifting all associated arrest warrants and ordering removal of alerts issued to Dominican migration authorities and INTERPOL. ormal notifications were submitted between January and April 2025 by attorney Lic. Carlos Manuel Mesa, who represents Mr. Martínez.
On May 26, after the ship had departed the port, Dominican authorities reportedly contacted the vessel. Law enforcement personnel, led by Coronel Elian Andrés Rosario José, boarded the ship. Mr. Martínez was removed from the vessel and transferred to Dominican custody. No active warrant was presented to the cruise line at the time.
'We respectfully request the court to lift the impediment of exit that remains in place, given that there are no active criminal charges and the case was legally extinguished,' said Lic. Carlos Mesa. 'All filings are in accordance with procedural law and the original ruling from the Ninth Chamber.'
Though Mr. Martínez was released from custody shortly after, he continues to face a court- imposed impedimento de salida (travel restriction) and must appear periodically in court. His legal team has cited humanitarian and medical concerns in support of the motion to lift the restriction.

Jacksonville police arrested an 18-year-old man following an early morning, double-fatal shooting at a Southside shopping center. Larry Allen Baldwin Jr. is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and is being held without bail at the Duval County detention center, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office inmate records. Sebastian Gardner, an 18-month-old boy, died after his dad Scott Gardner allegedly left him in a 'hot truck' for over three hours to drink and get a haircut on June 6, authorities claim Sebastian was left alone in the backseat with just a small fan as the vehicle's temperature hit 111 degrees that day in Ormond Beach, Fla., medical personnel estimated 'This father is a human piece of garbage, and he's a lying sack of s---,' Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a briefingA toddler's life was cut short after his dad allegedly left him in a vehicle in the Florida heat for hours while he got a haircut and drank at a bar. On Thursday, June 19, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) and the Ormond Beach Police Department (OBPD) arrested the father, Scott Gardner, on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect causing great bodily harm, authorities said in a news release. The arrest came nearly two weeks after the death of his son, 18-month-old Sebastian Gardner. The toddler spent over three hours in the backseat of a 'hot truck' on June 6 while his dad, 33, spent time in Classic Cuts and Hanky Panky's Lounge, a barber shop and cocktail lounge located near each other in Ormond Beach, according to the sheriff's office. The Florida dad allegedly left Sebastian in the backseat of the truck with the windows down, no air conditioning and a small, battery-powered fan pointed at the toddler, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said during an emotional news briefing on Friday, June 20. Scott allegedly left Sebastian in the vehicle around 11:30 a.m. as he went to get his haircut, according to a timeline investigators provided. He then finished his haircut and headed to Hanky Panky's around noon, where he stayed and drank until at least 2 p.m., police said. During his time in the bar, a customer 'backed into a bartender's car,' and Scott came outside to investigate the damage to the vehicle, investigators said. He did not check on Sebastian before heading back into the bar to order more drinks, per Chitwood. At around 2:40 p.m., Gardner left Hanky Panky's, drove a 'short distance' home, and then proceeded to call 911 to report that Sebastian was not breathing, Chitwood said. 'My son's not breathing. A year and a half. Oh my god. He just had his eyes open. Oh my god, Sebastian,' the father says in a recording of the 911 call. However, investigators said the toddler was dead one to two hours before his dad contacted authorities. Following the call, an officer with the OBPD responded to the scene, but could not perform CPR, as the toddler's body had already gone into rigor mortis, according to Chitwood. Unresponsive, the 18-month-old was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. The toddler's temperature was over 107 degrees when he arrived at hospital, leading medical personnel to estimate that the temperature in the vehicle peaked at 111 degrees, Chitwood said. Witnesses at the bar said the pair 'didn't seem as distraught as you would expect someone to be for the child having just passed,' one investigator said in the news briefing, adding that this 'is consistent with the interactions that we had with [Scott] at the hospital.' Investigators also said in the June 20 news briefing that they do not believe Scott's mother was made aware of her grandson's death at that point. Though police said Scott ultimately confessed, the confession came after he 'gave multiple false accounts of what occurred' the day of his son's death, per the sheriff's office. Local businesses, fans make final preparations for Florida Panthers' championship parade and celebration
Thousands are expected to descend on Fort Lauderdale Beach Sunday to celebrate the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. More people are expected to be at the celebration this year compared to last, so businesses and fans are gearing up for the big day. Fans and businesses are making last-minute moves Brian Broeckelmann said he couldn't make last year's Panthers championship parade. "I actually had to work," he said. But he gets a second chance, and said he isn't missing this year's parade. He's getting some last-minute Panthers gear for him and his family at Sinbad Sports. Broeckelmann said he thought the first championship was a once-in-a-lifetime event. "Yeah, except this team is pretty special," Broeckelmann said. Owner Sinbad Elhaddad said he ordered more gear this year. The City of Fort Lauderdale said more people are expected to go this year. He told CBS News Miami that the Stanley Cup Championships have boosted sales by about 30%. "From last year, people are still coming and asking for last year's gear," Elhaddad said. "Now they're gonna be asking for back-to-back." How to travel for the parade and celebrations City officials are recommending that parade-goers use ride-share services, since driving can be difficult. The city has a map that shows 26 different parking garages that are open, but city officials say they can be anywhere from a 5-minute to an hour walk from the parade. So instead of all that hassle, you could take the water taxi. Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi president Greg Farley said he has 15 boats that will all be running Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and he said they can all carry a combined 1200 people. He told CBS News Miami it's more economical and fun to travel this way. "It will be $15 all day," Farley said. Joe Donovan and his wife are visiting from Boston; their hotel is right on the parade route, so they'll catch the team marching down the strip before flying home Sunday night.
