‘Rats!' Review: Keep Texas Weird

New York Times27-02-2025

'Rats!', a gross-out action-comedy in the vein of 'Pineapple Express' and 'Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,' throws us back into the suburban-youth aesthetics of the mid-aughts: its Hot Topic threads, pop-punk music and chintzy stoner décor. Set in a fictional version of Fresno, Tex., called Pfresno, circa 2007, this underdog caper also satirizes the state's conservative culture — its thing for gun rights and law enforcement.
In the beginning of the film, Raphael (Luke Wilcox), a listless 19-year-old, is caught graffiti tagging a phone booth. Officer Williams (Danielle Evon Ploeger), a comically noxious policewoman, tackles the teen to the ground, leading to his arrest and his forced embroilment in a sting operation against his cousin Mateo (Darius R. Autry).
Mateo is a genial weed-dealer whose roomies include a pet pig and a meth-smoking squatter — though he's obviously not the homicidal plutonium dealer Williams suspects him to be.
The directors Maxwell Nalevansky and Carl Fry build out this madcap conspiracy story with potty humor (courtesy of the very unladylike Officer Williams), bloody practical effects and surreal flourishes, which play out against intentionally unglamorous backdrops (strip malls and shabby backyards).
Bizarre digressions (like the screening of a rap music video about the joys of selling crack; or the perverse relationship between a foxy, cocaine-addicted reporter and her cameraman) will leave you slack jawed, whether you vibe with the film's particularly obscene style of deadpan absurdism or not.
If anything, the onslaught of weirdness is hypnotizing. As a visibly small-scale and local undertaking, the film feels genuinely connected to a vision of working-class Texas and its various characters. 'I don't know any of these people, this is just my circumstance,' says Raphael in one scene, which feels like a meta commentary on the experience of living in a country of such vast contradictions.
Rats! Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes. In theaters.

Inside the ‘Jaws' theme song creation 50 years ago: ‘Everyone's scared of those two notes'

They were the two notes of terror heard around the world. They were the two notes of terror heard around the world. But director Steven Spielberg initially laughed off composer John Williams' 'Jaws' theme that would become the signature sound — and sign — of the great white shark's attack in the summer blockbuster that opened 50 years ago on June 20, 1975. 'I expected to hear something kind of weird and melodic, something tonal, but eerie; something of another world, almost like outer space under the water,' said Spielberg in a 2012 Blu-ray featurette on the making of 'Jaws.' 7 'When everyone came out and said 'Jaws' scared them out of the water, it was Johnny who scared them out of the water,' said director Steven Spielberg of John Williams' 'Jaws' theme. Bettmann Archive 7 John Williams won the first of his four Oscars for Best Original Score for 'Jaws' in 1976. Bettmann Archive 'And what he played me instead, with two fingers on the lower keys, was 'dun-dun, dun-dun, dun-dun.' And at first, I began to laugh. He had a great sense of humor, and I thought he was putting me on.' But Williams was scaring up the menacing motif that would sink its teeth into moviegoers — and terrify beachgoers — for generations to come in the film classic that would launch his and Spielberg's careers into historic heights. While Spielberg might have first thought it was a joke, Williams was dead serious about the ominous ostinato of notes E and F played by tuba player Tommy Johnson. 'He said, 'You can't be serious?'' Williams — who had previously worked with Spielberg on 1974's 'The Sugarland Express' — told Classic FM in 2022 about his chilling riff to 'represent our primordial fear.' 'I think in Spielberg's mind … you want something really complicated and layered and, you know, atonal horror music or whatever,' film music historian Tim Greiving — who wrote the upcoming biography 'John Williams: A Composer's Life' — exclusively told The Post. 7 'You can almost think of it as, like, it is the shark,' said film historian Tim Greiving of the 'Jaws' theme. Courtesy Everett Collection 'But John Williams has such a great story instinct that he knew that the simpler, the better, that kind of economy and just, like, pure drive was what this movie needed. So, yeah, in this way he knew better than Spielberg.' To Greiving, Williams struck just the right note with the 'Jaws' theme. 'It so perfectly represents the mindless, just predatory instinct of a shark,' he said. 'You can almost think of it as, like, it is the shark.' But, he added, there's also a 'sense of a heartbeat' that captures 'you in the water with your heart rate kind of accelerating as the shark gets closer to you.' 7 'He said, 'You can't be serious?' ' said John Williams (left) of Steven Spielberg's initial reaction to his 'Jaws' theme. Courtesy Everett Collection The 'deceptively simple' phrase was just the right hook to harpoon the masses. 'It's just a very effective storytelling device,' said Greiving. 'I think anything more complicated than that wouldn't have been nearly as effective.' The 'Jaws' theme became a cultural touchstone in and of itself. 'Because 'Jaws' was such a huge phenomenon, it … just permeated everything,' said Greiving. 'And you had this musical signature, this musical brand to that phenomenon. So it's just an easy way to sort of shorthand reference 'Jaws' as a whole phenomenon.' 'I think it's like the opening of Beethoven's Fifth or the strings of 'Psycho.' It's just something so instantly recognizable that those kinds of things just catch on … and, you know, they just never go away, right? That's the brilliance of it.' 7 The shark in 'Jaws' had its own theme, which struck fear across generations. Getty Images However, Greiving notes that the two-note 'Jaws' theme that that has struck fear across generations is just a small part of the score that won Williams the first of his four Oscars for Best Original Score. 'I talked to [Oscar-winning composer] Hans Zimmer for my book, and he just said, 'You know, everyone's scared of those two notes, but for composers, we're scared of everything after those two notes, because the whole thing is so impressive,' ' he said. 'And I think John Williams, as he often does, takes a simple idea, a simple motif, and just expands it and develops it into basically a symphony.' Williams went on to score more than 100 films, including other classic Spielberg collaborations such as 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' 'E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,' 'Jurassic Park,' 'Schindler's List' and the 'Indiana Jones' franchise,' but he never imagined that the repeated pattern of 'Jaws' would never go away. 7 'He knew better than [Steven] Spielberg,' said Tim Greiving of John Williams (left) proposing the 'Jaws' theme. Getty Images 'At that time, I had no idea that it would have that kind of impact on people,' he told Classic FM. And Spielberg has credited the 'Jaws' theme as a major part of the movie's success. 'When everyone came out and said 'Jaws' scared them out of the water, it was Johnny who scared them out of the water,' Spielberg said in the Blu-ray featurette. 'His music was scarier than seeing the shark.' 7 Richard Dreyfuss (left) and Robert Shaw co-starred in the 1975 summer blockbuster 'Jaws.' Getty Images But for Greiving — whose Williams biography will be released on Sept. 2 — the 'Jaws' theme is even bigger than movies. 'I think the two-note theme in 'Jaws' is maybe the most famous musical unit in the history of music. I think you could argue that,' he said. 'I think more people around the world recognize these two notes played as the 'Jaws' theme more than almost any other piece of music.'

How to watch 'Match Me Abroad' season 2 online from anywhere

What do you do when you can't find love at home? Go on reality TV show "Match Me Abroad" season 2 obviously. Season 1 was TLC's most successful show today and singleton Harold from New Mexico (see below for the full cast) enjoyed it so much he's back for another go. On this occasion however, the locations are different and so are two of the matchmakers... Here's how to watch 'Match Me Abroad" season 2 online from anywhere with a VPN — and potentially for free. "Match Me Abroad" season 2 premieres on TLC on Sunday, June 22 at 10 p.m. ET/ PT. and is available to stream on Max the following day.• U.S. — TLC via Sling / Hulu / Fubo / | Discovery+ | Max (next day)• Canada — TLC via Sling / Hulu• Watch anywhere — try NordVPN 100% risk-free Fans of season one will be glad to see matchmaker Katarina Měmcová back and this time she will be helping Victoria and Amber find the partner of their dreams in Ireland. Meanwhile Monica and Toni will be traveling to Brazil and guided by Luiza while Dolly will be keeping an eye on Harold and Sarah in Singapore. Without giving too much away, things appear to go a bit smoother in Brazil (where one of the singletons claims to be falling in love after a week... with two men) than Ireland where there is a confrontation on one date that sees one of the cast knock a glass out of her suitors hand and storm off). Popcorn time. Read on to find out how to watch "Match Me Abroad' season 2 online and from anywhere in the world. "Match Me Abroad" season 2 premieres on TLC on Sunday, June 22 at 10 p.m. ET/ PT. and is available to stream on Max the following day. No cable? You can watch TLC on a live TV service, like Sling / Hulu / Fubo or stream on Discovery+ or Max (the next day). Traveling outside the States? You'll need to use a VPN to unblock your usual streaming service when abroad. We recommend NordVPN. Sling TV is one of the most affordable live TV services on the market. The Sling Blue package includes more than 50 channels including Fox and NBC (in select cities), TLC, AMC, Bravo, Food Network, HGTV, Lifetime and USA. Right now get 50% off your first month! You can still watch "Match Me Abroad" s2 thanks to the wonders of a VPN (Virtual Private Network). The software allows your devices to appear to be back in your home country regardless of where in the world you are. Ideal when you're away on vacation or on business. Our favorite is NordVPN. It's the best VPN on the market. There's a good reason you've heard of NordVPN. We specialize in testing and reviewing VPN services and NordVPN is the one we rate best. It's outstanding at unblocking streaming services, it's fast and it has top-level security features too. Fire up your website or streaming service of choice and tune in to "Match Me Abroad" season 2 just as you would at home. You can also watch it on Virgin Media (Virgin channel 167). If you have a Sky Go subscription, you can watch TLC live on that app as well. Season 1 is currently available on Discovery+ so you'll have plenty of time to catch up. Americans on vacation in the U.K. can use a VPN if they want to watch via their usual domestic streaming platform from Sunday, June 22. As with the U.K., "Match Me Abroad" season 2 has no confirmed release date in Canada as yet. Historically, Canada's release date has lagged behind compared to their North American compatriots so don't expect it to drop straight away on Discovery+ after it has premiered in the U.S.. Those on vacation in the Great White North will need one of the best VPNs to log in back home as you will be geo-blocked when not in the Great North. We recommend NordVPN. It's a similar story Down Under, with no release date yet announced. However, when "Match Me Abroad" season 2 does arrive in Oz, it'll almost certainly stream on 9Now with season 1 currently ready to stream on the platform. Visiting Australia and don't want to wait? American fans can watch the show from anywhere by using a VPN such as NordVPN. HAROLD (NEW MEXICO) – SEARCHING FOR LOVE IN SINGAPORE Harold is back and more determined than ever.
