Hong Kong trail runner's app aims to prevent hiking emergencies before they happen

A veteran Hong Kong trail runner has launched an app which automatically sends distress signals if a hiker gets into difficulty.
Rainer Duespohl, who has explored the city's trails for more than 17 years and is on the board of the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), launched the WayMe app this week, hoping to add an extra layer of safety to the community.
WayMe, which uses real-time location monitoring to send out warnings to users' emergency contacts if something goes wrong, comes pre-loaded with Hong Kong's hiking and trail running routes.
'There were two main drivers behind launching WayMe,' Duespohl said. 'One is that when you hike alone and something happens to you and you can't use your phone, maybe you're unconscious; how can technology help you?
'The second is, in Hong Kong, we often see news where hikers sadly get lost and die on the trails, so how can we help rescue teams find them quicker, or can we even prevent it?'

WayMe users can select their hiking route or trail or plot their own before setting off. Throughout their journey, the app uses real-time monitoring and geofencing to make sure they stay on track.

China's Fujian carrier developing swarm attack ability to ‘overwhelm the enemy': CCTV

China's most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian , is expected to have the ability to carry out 'deck load strikes', a type of swarm attack that could help the country's navy gain a first-mover advantage in combat, according to state broadcaster CCTV on Saturday. A deck load strike refers to the ability to rapidly launch a large number of aircraft at once. This tactic was used by the US Navy during the Vietnam war for shock effect. While military experts had speculated that the Fujian would be able to carry out these attacks, this was the first state media report to highlight the ability. 'China's aircraft carrier technology is marking a historic leap as it enters the critical phase of combat capability development,' CCTV reported. It added the home-grown aircraft carrier had been 'progressing steadily' in sea trials since the first test in May of last year and would 'soon form a three-carrier fleet' for the Chinese navy. The Fujian is expected to be commissioned by the end of the year, CCTV reported in May, joining two active carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong.

Huawei opens HarmonyOS 6 to developers, unveils AI agents and cloud architecture updates

Huawei Technologies has unveiled the latest version of its proprietary operating system (OS), HarmonyOS 6, new artificial intelligence (AI) models and its CloudMatrix 384 AI rack architecture, as the Chinese technology giant accelerates efforts to build out its in-house software ecosystem in the face of ongoing US sanctions. The company introduced a beta version of HarmonyOS 6 at its annual developer conference on Friday, highlighting new features such as AI agents. Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei's consumer business group, said the update was now available to developers, but did not specify a launch date for consumers. Huawei has installed HarmonyOS 5 on more than 40 device models, with over 8 million developers registered in its ecosystem and more than 30,000 apps and 'atomic services' – mini programs that run without installation – now available, according to Yu. Still, he acknowledged that HarmonyOS trails Apple 's iOS and Google 's open-source Android in terms of global reach and app support. 'But the top 5,000 apps accounted for 99.9 per cent of consumer time spent' on Huawei devices, he said. The company also announced the HarmonyOS Agent Framework, a toolkit that will allow developers to create AI agents – programs that can perform tasks on behalf of users – without the need to build or train foundation models. More than 50 AI agents, including those from Chinese microblogging platform Weibo and audio platform Ximalaya, would be available when HarmonyOS 6 launches publicly, according to Huawei. The latest family of its AI models include a natural language processing model with 718 billion parameters and a computer vision model with 15 billion parameters. Parameters are a machine-learning term for variables present in an AI system during training.
