New Wales boss Lynn names extended Six Nations training squad
New head coach Sean Lynn has named a 48-player training squad ahead of Wales' 2025 Six Nations campaign.The Gloucester-Hartpury head coach was named as Ioan Cunningham's successor in January and has named an extended training squad around the 15 Welsh internationals who featured in the Women's Premier Rugby semi-finals.Lynn's Gloucester-Hartpury take on Saracens in the final on 16 March at StoneX Stadium - with the Swansea-born head coach then taking charge of Wales permanently for the Six Nations.Keira Bevan and Alex Callender have been appointed as vice-captains to support captain Hannah Jones.The squad also includes a number of players from the Celtic Challenge's two Welsh sides, Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder."It's exciting to get to name a first Wales training squad and one full of experienced international players, playing well for their clubs and young exciting players who have shone in the Celtic Challenge," said Lynn."To have so many Welsh internationals feature in the PWR semi-finals is a testimony to the players quality and to their performances with their clubs."As coaches we have selected players who have really impressed and put their hands up playing for Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder in the Celtic Challenge."
The impressive form of Gwalia - who have won five of their seven games and sit third in the league table - has ensured players including Bryonie King, Gwennan Hopkins, Alaw Pyrs, Maisie Davies and Sian Jones feature under Lynn.Thunder's Natalia John, Hannah Bluck, Lucy Isaac and Cadi-Lois Davies are also included.Isla McMullen, Seren Lockwood, Shanelle Williams and Jorja Aiono will join the senior squad from the Under-18s set-up as players of national interest."My rugby philosophy has always been about finding, nurturing and supporting young players and giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential," added Lynn."We have selected a group of young Welsh players from age-grade rugby so the coaches and staff can assess where they are but also so they can experience an international environment and the standards expected at this level."The Celtic Challenge players and the age-grade players are the future Wales family and have been identified because we believe they have talent to make an impact at the highest level now or in the future."Wales begin their Six Nations campaign in Scotland on 22 March before hosting England in Cardiff a week later.Lynn's side then travel to France on 12 April before welcoming Ireland to Wales eight days later.Wales conclude their campaign with a trip to Italy on 26 April.

Liverpool transfer stance on Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace face two options
Liverpool have been offered encouragement in their pursuit of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi after the England international made his stance clear on his future Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi - but only if the price is right. The England international is ready to leave Selhurst Park this summer. Guehi, 24, has just one year left on his deal with the FA Cup winners and is attracting attention from a number of Premier League clubs. Both the Reds and Arsenal are admirers, while Newcastle United have a long-standing interest. Liverpool have agreed a deal to sell Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £30million. The England Under-21 international made 25 appearances in all competitions last term, but only made five Premier League starts, with only one of those - at Ipswich on opening day - coming before the title had been won. Quansah, currently with the England Under-21s at the European Championships in Slovakia, will complete his move to Germany when his participation at the tournament is over. Liverpool bosses are keen for Quansah to go and get regular football, which will be on offer under new Bayer boss Erik ten Hag, with the Warrington-born defender set to replace Jonathan Tah, who joined Bayern Munich. Interestingly, Liverpool have negotiated a buy-back clause in the deal. But it leaves the champions, who have already splashed a potential British record £116m on Florian Wirtz and a further £29m apiece on Jeremie Frimpong and Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili - with £40m Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez to come - actively looking to bolster their centre-back ranks. With Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk both in situ as the club's first choice partnership, the priority is a young centre-back with high potential. It has been a similar case in each of the last two summers, with Chelsea's Levi Colwill targeted in 2023 after impressing on loan at Brighton, and Leny Yoro emerging last summer before joining Manchester United. Dean Huijsen was of interest this summer before heading to Real Madrid for £50m instead. However, Guehi offers an intriguing alternative. While he doesn't exactly fit the mould of a young centre-back - given he turns 25 next month, boasts a wealth of Premier League experience and is already a senior England international - the Reds are keeping an eye on developments with the ex-Chelsea man. Given his quality, leadership capabilities, homegrown status and the uncertainty of Konate's long-term future - his contract is up next summer too - he certainly fits the bill. Much of whether he ends up at Anfield will depend on Palace. They rejected four offers from Newcastle last summer, with figures hitting in excess of £60m. That's a number Liverpool don't want to go to - particularly with the prospect of getting him for nothing in 12 months time. With an extension very unlikely, Palace must either sell now or face losing him for nothing in 2026. The Eagles are negotiating a deal with Sporting Lisbon - potentially heading towards the £40m mark - for Ousmane Diomande as a potential replacement, but head coach Oliver Glasner wouldn't mind having both available as they look to balance the Premier League and European football next season. As such, Palace and Guehi are waiting to see what offers come their way. And while Guehi is understood to be keen on a move to the champions, he's also aware that he needs to be playing regularly ahead of the World Cup next summer. David ‘Syd' Lawrence dead at 61: First British-born black cricketer to represent England dies after MND battle

Lawrence, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year, was incredibly proud to be honoured. He said last week: "It is not something I ever thought would sit after my name. "I am absolutely delighted that it will do so for however long I am here and will be a part of my legacy when I am gone." Following Lawrence's sad passing, a family statement said: "'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed." The ECB have paid tribute to Lawrence, calling him a "pioneering" player who left an "indelible mark" on the sport in this country. ECB chair Richard Thompson said: "David 'Syd' Lawrence was a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion. "His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes. As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. Lawrence played five test matches for England, only for his international career to be brutally cut short by a serious knee injury in 1992. Paying tribute to their legendary former fast bowler and executive, Gloucestershire wrote: "Gloucestershire Cricket is devastated to learn of the passing of former player and Club President, David 'Syd' Lawrence MBE, aged 61. "Everyone at Gloucestershire Cricket would like to send their best wishes to David's family during this terribly sad time." England star paid tribute to Lawrence ahead of today's match-up with India at Headingley. Stars including Ben Stokes took part in a minute's applause in honour of the cricket icon.

‘Syd' Lawrence: England trailblazer who rocked and rumbled for Gloucestershire
David 'Syd' Lawrence was presented with a number of challenges both on and off the cricket field but he met each of them with magnanimity and resilience. Racially abused by a team-mate as a teenager, Lawrence had the last laugh by, in his own words, 'rocking and rumbling' for Gloucestershire and becoming the first British-born black man to play for England before being cut down in his prime. Lawrence refused to feel sorry for himself and that much was evident when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year, raising money and spreading awareness of the condition which robbed him of his voice and ability to walk before his death, aged 61. Affectionately known as Syd after the British bandleader, Lawrence was born on January 28, 1964, in Gloucester to Jamaican parents, inheriting his love for cricket from his father. He was only 17 when he opened the bowling for Gloucestershire alongside a famous Jamaican in Courtney Walsh although memories of his debut season are soured by a banana being left outside the door of his hotel room by an unnamed peer. 'I just sat in that room thinking: 'I'm a cricketer, what makes me different?'' Lawrence reflected to the Guardian years later. 'Why would somebody want to do that, just because of the colour of my skin?' While he received an unreserved apology from Gloucestershire in 2021, Lawrence initially had to shrug off the incident for fear of being perceived as difficult and he instead channelled any frustration by becoming one of the speediest, if occasionally wayward, operators on the county circuit. A strapping fast bowler, he took 625 wickets in 280 games for Gloucestershire but is just as remembered for his England outings, starting against Sri Lanka in 1988, where he claimed three dismissals. Lawrence waited another three years for his next appearance, claiming 14 wickets in three Tests in 1991, the highlight being a five-for against the West Indies to help England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards among his haul. He also made his lone ODI appearance in the same summer but Lawrence's career was halted in its tracks the following year as he badly fractured his left kneecap after falling awkwardly when running into bowl on the final day of a Test against New Zealand in Wellington. His England days were immediately over aged 28 following 18 wickets in five Tests but he made a brief county comeback in 1997, playing four first-class games for Gloucestershire before hanging up his boots – 16 years after he first played professionally. Lawrence became a competitive bodybuilder following his retirement and he was also a nightclub owner in Bristol. He was back in the public eye after detailing his racism experiences in his playing days, before in April 2022 he became Gloucestershire's first black president. Lawrence dictated his own recently-released autobiography, while he received an MBE earlier this month in the King's Birthday Honours for his outstanding services to cricket. 'It is an incredibly proud moment,' he said. 'It is not something that I ever thought would sit after my name, but I am absolutely delighted that it will do so for however long I am here and will be a part of my legacy when I am gone.' Lawrence is survived by wife Gaynor and son Buster, an ex-professional rugby union player.
