Here's what you need to know about fuel prices in July
Pretoria motorists may want to brace for potential fuel price changes in July, as mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund reveals shifting trends driven by surging global oil prices and ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East.
While the resilient rand has mitigated some of the impact, early indicators suggest that fluctuating fuel costs may lie ahead.
Here is what you need to know:
Petrol 93: increase of 6 cents per litre
Petrol 95: increase of 9 cents per litre
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): increase of 10 cents per litre
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): increase of 12 cents per litre
Illuminating paraffin: increase of 1 cent per litre
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy releases the official fuel prices only a few days before they take effect.
Still, current data provide a reliable indication of the likely direction of fuel costs, even amid ongoing market uncertainty.

Australian trial says tech for social media teen ban can work

SYDNEY - Australia's world-leading ban on under-16s joining social media sites cleared a big hurdle Friday as a trial found digital age checks can work "robustly and effectively". Sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and X could face fines of up to Aus$50-million for failing to comply with the legislation, which was passed in November. They have described the law -- which is due to come into effect by the end of this year -- as vague, rushed and "problematic". There has been widespread concern over children's use of online platforms as evidence shows that social media can have negative effects on children's mental and physical health. Digital age verification systems -- which would be critical to the ban -- can work, said the interim findings of an independent Age Assurance Technology Trial, conducted for the government. "These preliminary findings indicate that age assurance can be done in Australia privately, robustly and effectively," it said. There are "no significant technological barriers" to deploying age-checking systems in Australia, said the trial's project director, Tony Allen. "These solutions are technically feasible, can be integrated flexibly into existing services and can support the safety and rights of children online," he said in a statement. In a separate interview with Australia's Nine Network, Allen said preventing children from circumventing age verification tools was a "big challenge", however. "I don't think anything is completely foolproof," he said. There are a "plethora" of approaches to age verification but no single solution to suit all cases, said the trial report, in which 53 organisations took part. Australia's legislation is being closely monitored by other countries, with many weighing whether to implement similar bans. Greece spearheaded a proposal this month for the European Union to limit children's use of online platforms by setting an age of digital adulthood -- barring children from social media without parental consent.

Don't lose your rebate! Pensioners must reapply before JUNE 30

Don't lose your rebate! Pensioners must reapply before JUNE 30 Ekurhuleni pensioners are reminded to take urgent action regarding their property tax rebates. 'The municipality will cancel all existing rebates by June 30, 2025, and pensioners must submit new applications based on the updated property valuations effective from 1 July,' said Stefan Hough, chairperson of the Birchleigh Rate Payers Association. Residents should have received a Section 49 notice, which outlines the new valuation of their property. Also read: Application for pensioner's property rebates made easy This valuation will determine their future property tax amounts. Who Qualifies for the Pensioners Rebate? To qualify for a rebate, applicants must meet the following criteria: Be 60 years or older. Have a joint monthly income below R22 895. Not sub-let any part of the property. 'While the rebate offers significant relief, the application process is often complex and not elderly-friendly, requiring visits to multiple venues for documents and authorisations.' One-Stop Service for Birchleigh Residents To ease the process, the Birchleigh Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) is once again offering a one-stop service to assist pensioners in Birchleigh and neighbouring wards with the application process. Dire fuel price projection to hit South Africa's motorists HARD

The latest official data confirms that bad news lies ahead for South Africa's motorists in July 2025, especially for diesel vehicle owners. Vehicle owners in South Africa saw a sizeable decrease in the cost of both petrol and diesel earlier this month and early signs were that there was even more good news ahead next month. However, that picture radically changed after Israel attacked Iran late last week, which resulted in the brent crude oil price rising and the rand weakening. While the picture is particularly grim when it comes to the diesel price forecast, petrol vehicle owners are also in for a shock at the pumps in the coming weeks. Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Thursday, 19 June. FUEL PRICE CHANGE Petrol 93 increase of 35 cents Petrol 95 increase of 38 cents Diesel 0.05% increase of 56 cents Diesel 0.005% increase of 58 cents Illuminating Paraffin increase of 45 cent If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – an increase of 35 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and an increase of 38 cents for 95 users. Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 56 and 58 cents per litre increase. Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to rise by 45 cents in price. FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS: 1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices 2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products Oil price At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $77.24 a barrel. Exchange rate At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R18.03/$. The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 1 July 2025. Go easy on the accelerator until then, Mzansi.
