Ryan Reynolds says he is looking forward to 'many more years' with Wrexham AFC
Actor Ryan Reynolds has revealed he is looking forward to 'many more' years at Wrexham AFC after the football club won promotion to the Championship.
Deadpool star Reynolds and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia actor Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham for £2 million in February 2021 and have led the Welsh club out of the fifth division, known as the National League, and into the second tier of English football.
The pair's time with the club has been documented in the FX series Welcome To Wrexham, which has run for three series and earned eight Emmys, with a fourth season set to air next month as fans "enjoy the ride".
Writing on X, Reynolds said: 'This club is the sum of its supporters. Before we showed up they'd saved it multiple times. It's a temple as much as a football pitch. @Wrexham_AFC has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.'
Wrexham beat Charlton 3-0 on Saturday to became the first team in English professional football to achieve three successive promotions. Reynolds' post was accompanied by a clip of him attending a concert by Ed Sheeran, a minority owner and sponsor of Ipswich Town.
At the gig, Sheeran told him: 'Ryan, I think Wrexham are going to get promoted and we're going to see each other next season.' Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship on Saturday, after winning just four matches in the top flight this season.
Reynolds crossed his fingers after Sheeran's comments in the video, which charted Wrexham's success, accompanied by US band Green Day's song Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life). He added: 'It's hard to avoid immediately starting work on next season - but important to take the moment in.
"Looking back and looking forward feels really good right now. I think I speak for @RMcElhenney when I say, thank you for the greatest four years and here's to many more.'
The football club has seen recent royal visits from the Prince of Wales and the King and Queen, and actors including Wolverine star Hugh Jackman, who is a supporter of Norwich City.
McElhenney and Reynolds were honoured in 2022 with the Dragon Award from the Welsh Government, the Football Association of Wales and S4C for promoting the country and its language.

After making my way up a series of stairs (you forget that to visit a rooftop bar, you have to actually climb to the rooftop) I walked out onto a lawn decorated with picnic benches and bold colours. This spot definitely has a party vibe, with booming beats blasting through the speakers and a DJ booth right in the centre. After walking up a staircase full of painted clouds and mythical goddess quotes, I stepped out into a world of peachy pink beachfront bliss. With its palm trees, parasols and beach hut bar, why go for a girl's trip to Marbella when you can sip and sunbathe in Waterloo? Advertisement This beach club style rooftop bar is just minutes' walk from a busy station. But once I arrived, I instantly forgot about where I really was. Drinks like alcoholic slushies are served in takeaway style cups at wooden benches for that no-frills urban feel. It all felt a bit too cool and concrete for me, but the £5 drinks stole my heart. Burgers from Black Bear smelled divine, and the ever-popular eggslut was serving their famous breakfast style sandwiches. Tommy Fleetwood reveals he'd be first in line to make key change at the Travelers
The English star flying at the Travelers and willing to take next step in kit choice Terrific Tommy Fleetwood sealed a special day at the Travelers with a nine-wood epic and admits he'll go even higher in the olf-fashioned club stakes if he is offered the chance. The English star is bang in contention for his first-ever PGA Tour title after a brilliant Friday at PDC River Highlands. Fleetwood roared to a back nine of 30 including two eagles to match pace with Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas at the halfway summit in Connecticut. The Ryder Cup hero finished the job with a magnificent moment as, after a loose drive hit a tree, he produced a glorious approach with the trusty nine-wood that he's had in the bag for the past couple of years. Fleetwood's use of the club has caught attention and been followed by peers and he said: 'I just sort of caught the right moment to hit a nine-wood. I had like 264 pin, but the minimum that I had to carry on the left was 240 something, so I knew if the nine-wood was turning, it was going to be fine. It came off perfect and then beautiful putt. 'Nine-wood I've had for two seasons now. This week, I don't have a four-iron in. Like four-iron and nine-wood go very similar distance, within five yards of each other, obviously very different performing clubs. "So it replaced the four-iron. My bag is always sort of changing. But I do feel like this week is a very good course for it. Four [head covers] and a putter so far. Getting more and more. I don't know, there's another season coming back next season, five-iron might be out. See what comes up next. 'No, I haven't been offered an 11-wood head yet, but believe me, if one comes out I'll be the first to try it.' Fleetwood's charge was stunning with the two eagles lightning up the afternoon and he added: 'I'm not sure I've had one for a while. So 13, wind was flickering off the right, I hit mini-driver off the tee, felt like it was the widest point. "Those crosswinds, you get around that point and you're obviously waiting a little bit and the wind goes from across to into to down and then 15, the tee shot there was unbelievable looking at it, and it pitched right into that upslope, and I was a bit gutted where it pitched and then chipped it in. Would have been happy walking off with two birdies, but two eagles was a big bonus.' Fleetwood's scoring belied the tricky conditions with he wind and he said: 'It was really tough, actually. "I think early on, you had to make sure you got your head around that it wasn't a very scorable day, especially on the front nine. I felt like there was a lot of tough holes, I scrambled really well. 'I guess this course does give you the opportunity to have a little stretch like I did. You can get on a roll like we've seen it in the past, but I don't think it was a day where you were really looking for that at all. "I'm very, very happy that it happened for me. 'There is a certain element of luck and a certain element of gusts involved and it was very tough. There was a ton of crosswinds all day and there's always an element of luck and timing involved in it. "All you can do is hit the shots. What I did really well was not let the wind overly dictate my swing. I sort of picked my shots well and hit my shots and took it from there. 'It's easy to try and do too much and I've definitely done that plenty of times before. I felt like I did a good job of the opposite really.'

'I have confession about being knighted by the Queen – and I nearly missed out'
Sir Alastair Cook was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019 for his services to cricket, but the former England captain was close to missing out on the honour altogether Few honours are more prestigious than a knighthood. Three years before the Queen passed away, former England cricket captain Sir Alastair Cook was named in her New Year honours list. And two months later, the former Essex Eagles star travelled to Buckingham Palace to be given his knighthood by the Queen. Despite the uniqueness of the occasion and the honour that comes with it, there is one crucial thing Sir Cook has forgotten. In the brief period of time he spent with Her Majesty the Queen, the legendary batsman admitted he can't actually recall what the monarch said. In addition to that, he was also close to missing out on the honour altogether, as his invitation was sent to the wrong address. While speaking at the launch of The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show, Cook, when asked to describe the invitation process, exclusively told Mirror Sport:"Well, I got a text message. "My invitation got sent to the wrong address. So someone had some address for something, whether they opened it or not, I do not know." Looking back on the afternoon itself, he added: "The whole day and the whole experience is very surreal. Certainly one you don't set out for, don't expect and don't necessarily think you deserve. "It's a very special day to be able to receive it and to be called a Sir and to be able to understand the history of the award, I like my history. It's a huge honour and that's all I can really say about it. "I can't actually remember what she said. But it was an honour to have met her on a few occasions. It's certainly one which is up there as a proud thing." Cook retired from international cricket at the age of 33 years old after a historic career as England captain and opening batsman. He departed having amassed 33 test centuries and 12,472 runs, the latter being a national record until Joe Root surpassed him in 2024 on day three of the five-test series in Pakistan. Cook received an MBE in 2011, which was upgraded to a CBE five years later. Only 12 England cricket stars have received knighthoods for services to the sport, with Cook being the first since Sir Ian Botham in 2007 to be heralded with the honour. Now he is no longer competing, Cook has been impressed with Ben Stokes ' leadership since he was named captain in 2022. Mentioning his former team-mate, Cook added: "He'll (Stokes) go down in the history of English cricket as one of the best. "As a leader, you get judged on a couple of things, how your side plays and your results. He's certainly gone in and changed the narrative of how test cricket can be seen." Stokes' leadership will be put to the test this year, with this weekend's five-test series against India providing England with a huge challenge. A matter of months later, England will travel to Australia for the start of the Ashes in November.
