Javier Mascherano surprised by Lionel Messi's 'winning spirit' after Inter Miami's shock Porto win
"In a footballing sense, what else is there to say? He's the best player that has played this sport in its history, but what is surprising is his will to win.
"Beyond his goal... he's a player who shows us how to compete, his hunger, his desire to continue competing at whatever level it is," Mascherano told reporters.
Mascherano said his Argentine compatriot's competitive spirit at 37 was more surprising to him than the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's quality.
Veteran playmaker Messi curled home a fine free-kick in a man-of-the-match performance at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the winning goal in Miami's 2-1 Group A victory over their Portuguese opponents.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano admitted he is surprised at Lionel Messi 's desire to win after the MLS side shocked Porto at the Club World Cup on Thursday.
"Today, even in the last minutes, tired, with a knock, he kept helping the team in any way he could, in attack, in defence, to get the result...
"We know having him gives us an advantage, but above all, through his contagious spirit, the winning spirit that he has."
Many expected Porto to beat Inter Miami but the American side recorded a first ever victory in a competitive match for an MLS team against European opposition and the first shock at the Club World Cup.
"I think that we understood that in football there are obviously hierarchies, and we were facing against a team at a high level, with international players," said Mascherano.
"But we were convinced that if we did what we had to do, if we had a plan, if we supported each other, if we were together, but above all, if we dared to play, we could compete."
Samu Aghehowa netted a first-half penalty for Porto but Telasco Segovia and Messi's strikes after the break earned Inter Miami victory which puts them level on four points with Palmeiras at the top of the group.
"What I told them (at halftime) was... to raise their spirits, because we had clearly showed we could compete, and that we had reached a moment where I didn't care about the result," added Mascherano.
"What I was interested in was showing we were capable of playing with and without the ball, and they understood, they picked themselves up and in the end it was a great afternoon for us."

With Euro teams feeling heat in the US, are Dortmund vulnerable against Sundowns?
Mamelodi Sundowns meet a Borussia Dortmund at the Club World Cup who were not their best selves in the 2024-2025 season, though clashing against a mildly off-pale version of the Bundesliga giants is still a formidable undertaking. Sundowns meet Borussia in their second Group F clash at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati on Saturday (noon Ohio time, 6pm SA time). Downs got off to the best start in the new 32-team format of the Fifa Club World Cup (CWC) in the US, beating Ulsan HD of South Korea 1-0 in Orlando on Tuesday night. Borussia were a little flat, being the less convincing side of a 0-0 draw against Fluminense in New Jersey, though that was one of the matches played in noon heat to hit prime time for European TV audiences. Still, there is a sense that while there have been big score mismatches between giants and minnows at the 2025 CWC, perhaps the European teams are less enthusiastic about the huge prize-money expanded event. The increase from seven teams is controversial, as it adds more games to an already packed calendar for the world's top players, especially in Europe. The season before Guirassy was top scorer with 28 goals. He is a versatile striker admired for his physical strength, aerial ability and strong finishing, particularly in the box. He mainly plays as a traditional No 9, holding up the ball and linking play. Karim Adeyemi Adeyemi was arguably Dortmund's best player against Fluminense, penetrating through the left flank. The 23-year-old German right winger scored seven goals and managed six assists in the Bundesliga campaign. Adeyemi is a speedy and direct attacker known for his dribbling and finishing abilities. He excels in counterattacking situations and can play as a centre-forward and second striker, though he's primarily a winger. Adeyemi's ambidextrous nature and skill taking on defenders makes him a dangerous man, especially in one-on-one situations. Marcel Sabitzer Sabitzer, 31, is one of the most experienced figures in the Dortmund squad, having played more than 400 Bundesliga games. The former Bayern Munich star is admired for his all-action style of play and the ability to contribute in multiple roles across the engine room.

General Motors unleashes 900kW Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X
American sports car claimed to go from 0 to 100km/h in under two seconds on its way to 375km/h. General Motors launched the eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 in 2024. And this proudly American-built machine had morphed into a mid-engine supercar producing 783kW of power and 1 120Nm of torque. This heady mix of power and torque came courtesy of a twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 driving down to the rear wheels. Resulting in not only a wild ride but also laying claim to being America's most powerful production car. Enter Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X This week General Motors went a step further and unveiled the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. And you guessed it, the 'X' stands for all-wheel drive. What you might have also seen coming in this era of electrification, is that this new Corvette ZRX1 is a hybrid. A high-voltage battery pack and electric motor now drives the front axle with the V8 left to still drive the rear axle. Being a hybrid means that the 1.9kWh battery does not require a plug to charge. All the charging takes place through regen when braking or deaccelerating. Just like on your Toyota Corolla Cross HEV. What is not anything like your Toyota Corolla Cross is the power output. The new Corvette ZRX1 has climbed to a crazy 920kW and 1 350Nm. Blink and it's gone Other little high-performance titbits you might want to know is that General Motors predict a 0-100 km/h time of under two seconds for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X thanks to launch control and the new all-wheel drive configuration. Quarter mile racing is huge in the US. This is where the motor manufacturers seek the biggest bragging rights over there. And here General Motors claim that the Corvette ZR1X will get across the line in under nine seconds at a speed of around 240km/h. Just in case you are looking to go to jail forever, the claimed top speed is 375km/h. That is true hyper car territory. As to be expected, with great power comes great responsibility, and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X comes standard with huge 10-piston front and six-piston carbon ceramic brakes. Two magnetic ride control chassis configurations are available. The ZTK Performance Package offers higher spring rates and Michelin's Pilot Cup 2R tyres, for the more track-day orientated buyer. You can also add their high-downforce Carbon Aero package to a standard chassis of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. This adds the likes of dive planes, underbody strakes, a hood lip over the front heat extractor and a rear wing. This package is said to be capable of over 500kg of downforce at top speed and comes standard on ZTK-equipped cars. Before you roll your eyes and think this will be another model that will never make it to Mzansi in right-hand-drive (RHD), think again. A partnership between Durban-based Rospa International and Autogroup International means that rides like these are very possible to reach us in RHD.
