FIR against Kesari Chapter 2, Trinamool says film insults Bengal's freedom struggle
On June 18, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongly condemned the makers of 'Kesari Chapter 2', accusing them of 'distorting' Bengal's contribution to India's freedom struggle. The party described the depiction of prominent Bengali revolutionaries as a 'deliberate insult' to the state's rich historical legacy. An FIR has been filed against seven of the film's producers at Bidhannagar South police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).advertisementThe controversy flared up after a scene in the film allegedly misrepresented iconic freedom fighters Khudiram Bose and Barindra Kumar Ghosh. According to the TMC, the film refers to Bose as 'Khudiram Singh' and portrays Barindra Ghosh as 'Birendra Kumar' from Amritsar, a move the party has slammed as a 'deliberate distortion of historical facts.'
In a recent press conference, senior TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty spoke about Bengal's contribution to freedom. 'The names of Bengali revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom were being distorted. This is not just a mistake, this is a conspiracy to erase Bengal's role in the freedom movement. How did such a film get a censor certificate?' Ghosh said.Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also weighed in on the same and said that there are several attempts to downplay Bengal's historical significance.advertisementWithout directly naming the film, she said, 'There are attempts to undermine the role played by the Bengali revolutionaries during the independence struggle. We condemn this. The BJP has been targeting Bengal and our cultural heritage.'Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, 'Kesari Chapter 2' is reportedly inspired by the book The Case That Shook the Empire by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat. Starring Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan, and Ananya Panday, the film has drawn criticism for altering historical facts, most notably for renaming and replacing key revolutionaries. As per Ghosh, the film replaces Hemchandra Kanungo, who trained young revolutionaries in bomb-making, with a fictional character named Kripal Singh. The party demanded strict action and accountability from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). 'Why didn't the censor board flag these historical distortions? Who allowed such a film to pass certification?' they asked.Produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, 'Kesari Chapter 2' earned strong audience approval, translating into a robust box-office run. Since its April 18 release, the film has amassed Rs 142 crore worldwide. It is currently streaming on JioHotstar.Must Watch

HC stays state relief for Group-C & D jobless school staff
Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday stayed till Sept 26 the state's interim relief for Group C and Group D employees of state-run schools who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court order on April 3. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state had announced a monthly interim relief of Rs 25,000 for Group C employees and Rs 20,000 for Group D employees. Another section of candidates, who were wait-listed, moved the HC praying for a stay on the state scheme as it "frustrated" the SC order. Justice Amrita Sinha held that people whose jobs were terminated by the SC order could not be provided such a support after the apex court had decided the issue of illegal appointments conclusively and opined that the appointments were a result of "fraud". Getting refund of the money already disbursed to the beneficiaries would be a problem if the state scheme was found to be in violation of law after the final hearing, she reasoned. The court also took note of the fact that the state welfare scheme was announced for a particular group who would not be doing any work for the state. "Paying persons gratuitously, who are not serving the state but are either sitting at home or are engaged elsewhere, does not appeal to the court," Justice Sinha held, adding that the state had applied a "pick and choose" method for determining the beneficiaries of the welfare scheme. "There are two sets of candidates. One set comprises appointed candidates whose jobs were terminated and the other set comprises the wait-listed candidates. Both sets are jobless now," Justice Sinha said, holding that the state scheme for a particular group "intended to provide succour to the tainted terminated candidates". Justice Sinha acknowledged the state's legislative competence to formulate a welfare scheme but held that such a scheme should be applied equally. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Whether it is proper for the state to create a class of favoured candidates out of a bigger class of unemployed candidates is a matter to be decided after hearing (all) parties," she said. The court did not buy the state's argument that the petitioners should not have approached the HC when a review petition by the state was pending before the SC. It recalled that the state had proceeded to publish the scheme when its own review petition was pending before the apex court. Justice Sinha directed the petitioners to file affidavits within four weeks and the state to file an affidavit in reply within a fortnight after that before the petition would come up for hearing next.

After TCS, AP govt allots land to Cognizant in Vizag
Vijayawada: Continuing its aggressive incentive policy stand, Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to allot land to another IT major, Cognizant Technology Solutions , at 99 paisa per acre in Visakhapatnam. The 21.31 acres will be allotted at Kapuluppada area in the city. The State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), in its recent meeting, approved the proposal of Cognizant to invest Rs 1,583 crore in its new ITES/IT campus. The state govt earlier allotted about 21 acres to another IT services major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), at 99 paisa per acre. The new campus of TCS is likely to be launched by the end of July. TCS has promised to provide 12,000 jobs. IT minister Nara Lokesh earlier announced that the govt is ready to give land to top IT companies at the same price as that of TCS if they come up with a promise of creating employment opportunities for local youth. "The state govt is committed to turn Visakhapatnam into the IT capital of Andhra Pradesh and a new investment destination for companies. To kick off the investment cycle rolling, a trigger is needed, and TCS will be that moment," Lokesh said earlier, justifying the allotment of land at almost free of cost to TCS. He said Tata Motors went to Gujarat after Narendra Modi, the then chief minister of Gujarat, offered land at 99 paisa per acre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "After Tata Motors landed in Gujarat, an entire ecosystem of automobile industry was created," said Lokesh. The discussions with Cognizant were initiated during the World Economic Forum summit in Davos. According to sources, Cognizant is planning its investment in three phases. The company has set a target of March 2029 for commencement of commercial operations. The project will be 100% self-funded. Together, TCS and Cognizant will bring 20,000 IT jobs to Visakhapatnam. Apart from direct employment, every job in the IT sector is expected to create indirect employment for four people. Besides TCS and Cognizant, Google is also planning to set shop in Visakhapatnam, which, according to sources, will be another major turning point in creating a whole ecosystem in new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data centres.

TMC, BJP spar over Bengal foundation day
Kolkata: Trinamool and BJP clashed on Friday over Bengal foundation day. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that police tried to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road. TMC criticised BJP, saying that the saffron party attempted to force a celebration that lacked spontaneity and with which people have no association. Centre has notified June 20 as statehood day in Bengal. Bengal govt has passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. The Friday faceoff between activists of BJP Yuva Morcha and the city police took place outside the Bhowanipore residence of Jan Sangh founding member Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, where the workers had assembled to pay their respects to the leader and then planned to reach Netaji Bhavan, a kilometre away, on two-wheelers and on foot. Suvendu Adhikari, state leader of the opposition, earlier led a march of BJP legislators from the assembly premises to the statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Red Road, about two kilometres away, and garlanded it. "This is a historic day which we must observe. On this day in 1947, the West Bengal Assembly under the leadership of Syama Prasad Mookerjee passed a resolution to remain in India," Adhikari said. It's a day close to the hearts of all Bengalis. The state assembly has already endorsed it. It doesn't matter where a motley band of BJP workers gather and try to force a celebration that lacks spontaneity and with which people have no direct association," said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. State parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay described it as "politically motivated", pointing out that state govt had already passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. "Why is BJP suddenly so much worked up on June 20 as Paschimbanga Divas?" he asked.
