Oman powers global dialogue on clean energy at ERRA Summit

His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tariq al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, inaugurated the International Conference of the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA), the first such conference to be held in the Middle East. Organized by the Sultanate of Oman through the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), the conference attracted more than 280 professionals from 50 countries. Featuring policymakers, regulators, academics, and private sector leaders, the conference highlighted Oman's growing stature in the global energy market and its resolve to shape the future for sustainable energy governance.
The conference, which was recognized as a strategic platform to advance sustainability and regulatory excellence, welcomed Oman hosting 47 organizations from across the globe. Senior-level discussions included specialist scientific workshops on global energy transformation and investing in clean energy technologies. Bilateral meetings and technical exchanges between international institutions and private sector stakeholders were also facilitated, with a view to forging regional partnerships and enhancing technical cooperation in new energy projects. The event also reaffirmed Oman's status as a visionary and trustworthy partner within the global energy community.
Dr Mansoor bin Talib al Hinai, Chairman of the Authority for Public Services Regulation stated, "The Sultanate of Oman, via the Authority for Public Services Regulation, is hosting the high-profile Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA) conference, and for the first time in the history of the Middle East. This historic move shows Oman's growing leadership in the management of the important energy sector and its commitment to encouraging the spread of sustainable practices across the region.".
Dr Al Hinai added: 'The conference is a significant forum for the exchange of international experience to the benefit of private sector participants, regulatory institutions, and government agencies. Key topics include increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity production, challenges related to this, encouraging green finance, and highlighting international and local efforts—Oman among them—towards achieving net-zero emissions through the use of alternative energy solutions."
Eng Abdullah bin Saeed Al Badri, APSR Advisor, stated: "Oman reaffirmed its ambitious clean energy transition plans to generate 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and 40% or more by 2040. These goals were put in the spotlight at the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA) Conference, hosted for the first time in the Middle East region by the Sultanate."
Andrijana Nelkova-Chuchuk, Chair of ERRA, and Head of Economic Department, Energy, Water Services and Municipal Waste Management Services Regulatory Commission (ERC), remarked: "Our association is a community of independent regulatory bodies from over 45 countries on five continents. We are especially proud of the presence of our members from the Gulf region, including regulators from Oman, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai."
She continued to state, "The event is taking place in a strategically important part of the world, and it is taking place at a moment of great complexity in the international energy environment. We're witnessing robust growth along with serious challenges, including those of the ongoing energy transition and recent global policy changes."
"Effective regulation is our answer to these challenges, and we welcome this conference as a means of sharing knowledge and experience to the purpose of our association—as we all strive for the best for the future of the energy industry," she added.

Oman showcases inclusive vision at Global Disability Forum
NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman took part in the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), held during June 10-12 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Oman's delegation to the conference was headed by Ambassador Omar bin Said al Kathiri, Oman's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, and comprised representatives from the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs. In a speech delivered by Badr bin Fareesh al Yahyaee, Assistant Director-General of the for Persons with Disabilities at the Ministry of Social Development, Oman highlighted its extensive efforts to support and empower persons with disabilities across all sectors. These efforts align with the provisions of the State's Basic Law, relevant national legislation, 'Oman Vision 2040' and the country's commitments under international conventions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Oman's address also outlined key achievements in the care and empowerment of persons with disabilities, including the draft law on the rights of persons with disabilities, which was formulated in accordance with the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Other milestones include the development of a comprehensive national guide for engineering standards and specifications for inclusive urban environments and accessible transportation, as well as the organisation of the first National Forum for Persons with Disabilities in 2023, whose outcomes laid the groundwork for a dedicated lab to enhance services and programmes for persons with disabilities. The Sultanate of Oman emphasised the importance of raising public awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities as a shared responsibility, with active participation from persons with disabilities themselves. Conference focuses on museums and their role in tourism development
MANAH, MAY 18 The three-day International Conference on 'Museums and their Role in Tourism Development' kicked off on Sunday under the auspices of Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, at the Oman Across Ages Museum in the Wilayat of Manah. Organised by the museum in cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the National Records and Archives Authority, the conference brings together over 42 researchers, academics and experts from 21 countries. Coinciding with International Museum Day, the conference aims to underscore the essential role of museums in driving sustainable tourism, preserving cultural identity and fostering intercultural dialogue. It seeks to highlight how museums can function as dynamic educational and cultural platforms, contribute to economic diversification and embrace modern digital technologies to enrich the visitor experience. Eng Al Yaqdhan bin Abdullah al Harthy, Director-General of the Oman Across Ages Museum and Chairman of the Organising Committee, stated that the conference reflects Oman's growing stature as a regional hub for museum and cultural studies. "The museums today have become integral pillars of sustainable tourism by transforming history into interactive experiences that engage both the senses and the intellect. Museums offer visitors an opportunity for thoughtful participation, serving not only as cultural destinations but also as platforms that encourage dialogue between civilisations, support the creative economy and promote inclusive educational content," he said. The organising committee received nearly 300 research submissions, of which 42 were accepted and will be presented during eight intensive scientific sessions over the three-day conference. In addition to the academic programme, the conference features a poster exhibition and six specialised workshops delivered by experts from Oman and abroad. These workshops focus on various fields such as digital marketing for museums, heritage conservation techniques and community engagement for museum. Dr Ech Cherki Dahmali, President of the Arab Organization for Museums and a leading member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), provided insights on the importance of museum development and global collaboration during his keynote address. He emphasised the council's role in enhancing museum development, supporting global collaboration and providing guidance during times of cultural crises. He also reflected on the deep cultural connections between Arab museums and international networks. The conference programme covers four key theme areas: museum and cultural institutions, economy and museum tourism, the cultural and educational role of museums, and digital technologies in museum exhibitions. These themes will be explored through a variety of research papers and expert presentations from countries including Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Algeria, Sudan, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Russia, India, Iran, and others, alongside contributions from several Omani researchers and students. The event also features contributions from leading Omani academics and public institutions. The workshops and discussions are intended to engage museum professionals, tourism sector stakeholders, educators and students in meaningful dialogue and enhance their practical skills.

Austria's regulator calls for ‘greater market responsibility' as PV boom reshapes energy systems
MUSCAT: Austria's top energy regulator has warned that the surge in solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, while vital to the energy transition, is straining electricity markets and grid infrastructure — calling for urgent reforms to ensure producers assume greater market responsibility. Speaking at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA), held in Muscat, Harald Proidl, Director of Renewables and Energy Efficiency at Austria's E-Control, said the country's PV boom has reshaped both generation capacity and regulatory oversight. 'In Austria, PV is no longer a marginal player — it accounts for around 25% of total installed capacity,' Proidl told the gathering of regulators and policy experts. 'But this growth has come with challenges: oversupply, negative pricing and grid instability.' Between 2020 and 2024, Austria tripled its PV installations from 150,000 to 500,000 systems, raising installed capacity from 2 GW to 8.4 GW. This was spurred by billions of euros in public subsidies, rising energy prices and concerns over energy security. But Proidl warned that while subsidies have helped scale deployment, many PV owners do not face balancing obligations. 'They can export excess energy to the grid without taking on system responsibility,' he said. 'This is not sustainable.' Austria recently raised network tariffs by 25% — partly due to PV-related costs — and is expanding energy-sharing models to decentralise consumption. 'We now have over 1,650 energy communities with 30,000 participants. We expect that to double by 2025,' Proidl noted. Despite these innovations, only 30% of PV power is self-consumed in Austria. The rest is injected into the grid, often creating localised oversupply and price volatility. 'Ideally, 100% of PV electricity should be used where it is produced,' he added. E-Control is urging policy shifts to reduce reliance on grid exports, expand incentives for local use; and apply smarter pricing and digital tools.
