Anderson's 3-hitter against Coastal Carolina in CWS finals opener puts LSU 1 win away from title
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kade Anderson pitched a three-hitter in his second straight dominant start, and LSU moved within a win of its second national championship in three years with a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series finals Saturday night.
The Chanticleers (56-12) lost for the first time in 27 games and must win Sunday to force a third and deciding game Monday night.
LSU (52-15) made Steve Milam's RBI single in the first inning stand up with Anderson getting stronger as the game progressed against a Coastal Carolina team that had won its first three CWS games by a combined 24-9.
The lefty, a projected top-three pick in next month's MLB amateur draft, was just as good as he was in LSU's CWS opener against Arkansas last weekend. He has allowed one run and six hits and struck out 17 in 16 innings in Omaha.
Against the Chanticleers he struck out 10, but he had to deal with traffic on the basepaths after issuing three of his five walks in the first two innings and hitting two batters. He was up to the challenge. The Chanticleers were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
Anderson (12-1) walked pinch-hitter Domenico Tozzi with two outs in the ninth, prompting a mound visit from pitching coach Nate Yeskie. Anderson then got Wells Sykes to fly out to end the game. Anderson and catcher Luis Hernandez embraced, and then their teammates mobbed them behind the mound.
Anderson worked around two walks in the first inning, got out of the third when Sebastian Alexander was caught stealing third base, and he struck out three in a row after Blagen Pado's double leading off the fourth.
After he gave up LSU's early run, Coastal Carolina's Cameron Flukey (8-2) matched zeroes with Anderson from the second to sixth inning. Flukey limited the Tigers to four hits, walked two and struck out nine before turning the ball over to Dominick Carbone to start the seventh.
The Tigers are 16-0 when they have a lead at any point when Anderson is pitching. It was Anderson's second shutout of the season.
They'll try to lock up their eighth national title Sunday.
Coastal Carolina won the national title in its first trip to Omaha in 2016 and is seeking to become the fifth school to win the title in each of its first two trips to the CWS, but the first since Michigan in 1962.

Instant recap: LSU baseball beats Coastal Carolina in CWS Game 1 Final
For the second time in three years, LSU is back in the College World Series finals. This year, the Tigers and Jay Johnson look to get revenge for the 2016 season. Kade Anderson would throw nine full innings and allow zero runs on three hits, 10 strikeouts, and five walks as he led the Tigers to a 1-0 win in Game 1. For the final time, Kade Anderson would trot out onto the mound to give it his all for LSU. He was fully rested and ready to give LSU a shot at starting this series 1-0. Advertisement Two Chanticleer runners reached base in the top of the first, but neither of them was able to score. In the bottom of the first inning, LSU would draw first blood as Derek Curiel walked and Steven Milam hit an RBI single to bring him around to score and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, Coastal Carolina would get a runner in scoring position with two outs. They attempted a double steal, and Luis Hernandez made a great throw to Michael Braswell III, and the runner slid off the bag as Braswell secured the tag for the third out. In the bottom of the third inning, Milam hit a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jake Brown struck out with two outs to strand him at third and keep the game 1-0. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU had another chance to score as Milam walked, and then an errant throw to first on a pick-off attempt almost resulted in extra bases for Milam, but the ball hit the umpire, so Milam was unable to advance. Advertisement That proved costly as Hernandez hit a single that would have scored Milam had he been able to advance. Instead, LSU had runners on the corners with two outs, and Chris Stanfield grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Daniel Dickinson was hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count, but after review, he was called out as it was determined that he leaned into the pitch for out number one. Braswell would ground out, Curiel reached on an infield single, and Ethan Frey was called out on a check swing for out number three. As we headed to the top of the ninth inning, LSU still led 1-0, and Kade Anderson once again went out on the mound to pitch. After a strikeout and a groundout, Coastal Carolina would get a walk to put a runner on first base with two outs. Anderson would get a flyout to right field for out number three! Anderson hurled the first complete game shutout since 2018 in Omaha! Game two of the series will be played tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT. College World Series 2025 score: LSU's Kade Anderson makes argument for No. 1 pick with shutout win in Game 1
Kade Anderson certainly looked like a No. 1 MLB pick for LSU on Saturday. (AP Photo/Rebecca S. Gratz) If LSU southpaw Kade Anderson is the No. 1 pick of the 2025 MLB Draft, Game 1 of the Men's College World Series will be a reason why. The All-American sophomore dominated Coastal Carolina with a shutout to put his team one win away from its second NCAA title in three years. His final line: eight innings, three hits, zero runs, five walks and 10 strikeouts on 130 pitches in a 1-0 win. Advertisement It was the first shutout thrown in the MCWS finals since 2018. The win also snapped a best-in-the-nation 26-game win streak for the Chanticleers. Anderson is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 3 prospect of the upcoming draft and is one of the top options for the Washington Nationals with the No. 1 pick. His main competition appears to be Oklahoma high school shortstop Ethan Holliday, son of former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday. The 20-year-old Anderson has three different pitches ranked as plus by Pipeline and he showed off all of them on Saturday. His fastball sat in the mid-90s while his slider and changeup regularly fooled hitters. Advertisement "Lot of credit to our defense, I didn't have that many strikeouts so a lot of credit to them," Anderson said after the game, in which he, again, posted 10 strikeouts. LSU needed every shutout inning, with Coastal Carolina's Cameron Flukey and Dominick Carbone holding the Tigers to six hits and one run. They got the sole run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. when a leadoff walk from Derek Curiel opened the door for a Steven Milam RBI single. They'll get their first chance to clinch the title on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Here's everything that happened in Game 1 of the Men's College World Series final via Yahoo Sports:

LSU baseball's Kade Anderson makes history in CWS finals win
In the opener for the College World Series finals and the last game of his LSU baseball career, Kade Anderson dealt a gem. The sophomore left-hander used 130 pitches against Coastal Carolina for the second complete game shutout of his career and third in College World Series finals history. The Tigers needed the performance out of their ace for the slim 1-0 victory. Advertisement Despite surrendering a career-high five walks and working out of the stretch with multiple runners in scoring position, Anderson stayed calm and channeled his clutch gene. He finished with 10 strikeouts, including four consecutive to between the fourth and fifth innings. The southpaw couldn't land his fastball in the strike zone initially so he turned to his breaking pitches. A heavy use of his curveball got Chanticleers to chase often and Anderson eventually gained better command of his slider. Anderson finishes 2025 as the nation's strikeouts leader with 180 and a sub-four ERA through 119 innings. He logged a 16-3 overall record through two years.
