How to answer Xia's call for Hong Kong? Tap global ties and lure talent, experts say
Hong Kong should maintain its international connectivity and attract talent to speed up its economic transformation, analysts and figures from the commerce sector have said, as they hailed the enactment of the national security law for improving the business environment.
Some political analysts also called on government officials to take bolder steps and adopt new thinking, taking advantage of the social stability and order brought by the security law Beijing imposed on the city in 2020.
Their suggestions came after the director of the State Council's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Xia Baolong, said the implementation of the law was a 'watershed' for the financial hub that brought order after chaos.
But Xia, who made the remarks at a forum on Saturday marking the anniversary of the implementation of the national security law, also warned against complacency, calling for unity to support the government and urging the administration to come up with innovative governance concepts to enhance effectiveness.
Political scientist Hung Wing-lok of the School of Governance and Policy Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said: 'Hong Kong should seize the opportunity to attract more foreign talent to speed up its economic transformation.
'As tensions between China and the United States remain high, Hong Kong should continue to keep its international connectivity to maintain its status as a global financial hub.

What is the ‘Hong Kong Summer Viva' campaign? And what deals are on offer?
Hong Kong is launching a summer campaign to electrify spending among tourists and locals on Monday, with the promotional effort offering perks and discounts on goods and services ranging from transport to theme parks. The effort has seen the Tourism Board team up with theme park operators, retailers and transport providers to launch the 'Hong Kong Summer Viva' drive. Here is what you need to know. 1. What is the Hong Kong Summer Viva campaign? The campaign is being spearheaded by the board to encourage tourists and residents to spend more in the city during the peak summer travel season. The promotion effort brings together more than 150 partners, including major attraction operators, hotels, restaurants and retailers. It also aligns with the board's recently stated goal of focusing on the quality and duration of visits, rather than purely looking at arrival numbers, with the new direction of 'packaging' together attractions and events to create more compelling travel itineraries. 2. What about exclusive tourist offers? In a bid to entice overseas visitors, the campaign has eight offers exclusive to tourists that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

How China squeezes Filipino fishers at Scarborough Shoal
From the decks of battered fishing boats, the struggle over Scarborough Shoal has entered a new, precarious phase. As China steps up its patrols, Filipino fishers say they are being forced to abandon seas their families have plied for generations – raising fears that what's unfolding at the reef could become the playbook for Beijing's wider South China Sea ambitions. The Chinese coastguard's intensified enforcement of a controversial anti-trespassing law is the latest move in China's campaign to tighten its hold over the rocky outcrop, located just 220km (137 miles) from the Philippines ' main island and squarely within Manila's exclusive economic zone. The warnings from fishers come as a fresh report by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies' Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, published on Monday, cautioned that China's expanding footprint around Scarborough Shoal risks cementing its de facto control – raising the spectre of future miscalculations in these disputed waters. Constant patrols by the Chinese coastguard have driven Filipino fishers as far as 40 nautical miles (74km) from the shoal, according to Leonardo Cuaresma, head of the New Masinloc Fishermen's Association in Zambales. 'If we go beyond that, the Chinese coastguard will chase us or hit us with water cannons. Even our Philippine coastguard and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources vessels are also subjected to water cannons,' Cuaresma told This Week in Asia.

How Hong Kong firms are weeding out ‘perfect' job candidates in age of AI
The popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has created so many 'perfect' job applicants that companies in Hong Kong are choosing more in-person interviews and stepping up scrutiny of potential hires, a leading recruitment consultancy has said. Advertisement Faye Walshe, global director of innovation and AI at Robert Walters, said its clients were shifting to physical face-to-face interviews to screen candidates, given the rise of AI tools that jobseekers could use. Citing her interactions with the firm's clients in the city, Walshe said many of them were more heavily scrutinising applications and would have to decide whether they were 'too perfect' and if AI had been employed. 'The trend that we are seeing is that more and more of those companies are putting in-person, face-to-face interviews in place, so that they can actually make sure they are making a connection with a human being,' she said. According to a Robert Walters Salary Survey released earlier this year, two-thirds of professionals polled in Hong Kong were already using AI in their daily work, with those involved in copywriting or research often leaning on the tool. Advertisement Walshe said jobseekers and employers could use many AI tools on the market. For instance, professional networking platform LinkedIn provided tools that allow recruiters to draft job advertisements and messages to candidates using AI.
