Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train: casting of first rail-level slab complete at Boisar station

Indian Express5 days ago

Casting work for the first rail-level slab of the upcoming Boisar station under the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project was fully completed on Tuesday. The 40-metre by 37-metre slab was built using over 1,070 cubic metres of concrete and will act as the track-laying base for bullet trains.
Boisar station, which is one of the main stops on the high-speed rail corridor, will have a total of nine such slabs at the rail level. Upon completion, the two-level station – with a concourse and a rail level – will be 425 metres long. The station will have a total built-up area of around 17,000 square metres, including 6,000 square metres at the concourse level.
According to officials at the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the work on Boisar station will include the use of approximately 8,000 metric tonnes of steel and 42,000 cubic metres of concrete.
Once commissioned, the station is likely to boost connectivity to important areas like the proposed Vadhavan Port (23 km away), Boisar and Tarapur industrial areas, Tarapur Atomic Power Station, and some tourist hotspots like Kelwa Beach, Dahanu, Bordi and Hiradpada waterfalls.
'Boisar will have a vital role to play in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, facilitating regional connectivity and economic growth. The architectural design of the station is based on the traditional fishing nets employed by Konkani fishermen, honouring the maritime heritage of the region,' said an NHSRCL official.
Passenger facilities at the station will include paid and unpaid lounges, waiting areas, smoking areas, first aid facilities, toilets, drinking water facilities and retail outlets. Lifts and escalators will also be there to facilitate smooth movement between floors.

Tour operator told to refund elderly couple for cancelled tour in Covid times

Ahmedabad: A consumer commission here has ordered a tour operator to refund the full amount with interest, along with Rs 55,000 compensation, to an elderly couple whose tours to Japan and Europe could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The couple was reluctant to go to the UK, Ireland, and Scotland upon the operator's insistence three years later. This case involved Asha and Yogesh Doshi, residents of the Ambawadi area, who paid Rs 5.30 lakh in 2019 to Mumbai-based Neem Holidays Pvt Ltd for two tours — Japan and Europe in 2020. Due to the Covid pandemic, the tours were cancelled. When normalcy returned, they requested the same tour package, but the operator could not arrange it. Considering that people were still reeling under financial stress due to Covid, the couple did not demand their money back. In 2022, the tour operator offered them a 13-day package for Australia. They agreed and paid Rs 10,000 extra, but this did not take place. A year later, the operator offered the couple a tour to the United Kingdom. The couple refused this trip, yet their tickets were booked. They requested the company not to force them to accept this package tour and demanded their money back. As the operator did not respond, the couple sued it with the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad City to get the refund. The operator's lawyer appeared, but the reply was not filed. The commission said that since the money was lying with the operator, the complainants did not have any choice but to agree to the unreasonable request. However, compelling them for another tour against their wish was harassment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The complainant's money has been wrongfully withheld by the opponent, and therefore the complainants are entitled to receive the full money of the package tour from the opponent," it said. The commission ordered the operator to return Rs 5.40 lakh with 8% interest, along with Rs 55,000 extra towards compensation for causing "physical harassment and mental agony" and towards the expenditure the couple incurred on litigation.

Mumbai man accuses IndiGo of humiliating blind mother, calls out staff apathy

A Mumbai-based man accused IndiGo staff at the city's airport of humiliating his blind mother during their recent journey to Guwahati. Turab Chimthanawala shared his frustrating experience in a now-viral post on LinkedIn. The post, now widely shared across platforms, questions whether basic dignity is still something blind passengers must ask for.'Should blind passengers have to ask for basic dignity?' Chimthanawala said in his post. According to him, he had informed IndiGo in advance about his mother's condition and requested assistance. But when they reached the airport, things reportedly went 'Instead of a trained staffer, an untrained one showed up, unsure of how to even navigate entry gates. My mother had to guide him to the boarding area,' he issues didn't end there. At the boarding gate, Chimthanawala claimed that staff mocked his request for help, gesturing and whispering in a manner he described as of them allegedly said help would only be provided up to the security gate and advised him to 'just follow a wheelchair passenger.''There, staff whispered, gestured, and mocked my request for help despite my mother being present. One falsely claimed assistance only goes till security,' he said. He stressed that this was not only inconsiderate but illegal under Indian law, which mandates that blind passengers be assisted till the aircraft continued to smirk, treating me like an inconvenience. We decided to manage on our own,' he said as he explained that it was only when he visibly struggled with his luggage that someone stepped then, the assigned staffer reportedly walked ahead without offering real support, and at one point, a gate staffer asked if he needed help, then walked off after seeing his mother.'At security, we told him we'd go alone. Later, a gate staffer asked if I needed help, and walked away on seeing my mother. Even onboard, crew saw my white cane but offered no assistance,' Chimthanawala said, adding, 'Even onboard, crew saw my white cane but offered no assistance.' Chimthanawala said this wasn't an isolated incident. He cited previous cases where he experienced similar treatment on IndiGo flights, including one where he was made to sit on a seat with no cushion.'This isn't an isolated incident. On past Indigo flights, I've experienced apathy and even mockery. Once, I was made to sit on a seat with no cushion,' he added. While he acknowledged the efforts of Prateek Sen, IndiGo's accessibility lead, he made it clear that these efforts had not translated into action on the ground. 'To be fair, Mr Prateek Sen from IndiGo is committed to accessibility. But clearly, that commitment hasn't reached the ground staff,' he a look at the post here:The airline responded to the post saying, 'Sir, we sincerely regret to hear about your experience. We would like to investigate the matter. Kindly allow us some time, and our team will contact you shortly.'Chimthanawala's post struck a chord with many, who called out the airline for failing to treat passengers with disabilities with care and respect.'The answer is absolutely not! And yet here we are. Incident after incident. Things won't change until more people start caring about this discrimination and voicing their displeasure vociferously,' a user said. Another user added, 'I stand with you. IndiGo must apologise and be penalised - dignity and support are basic rights, not favours.'As Turab Chimthanawala's experience continues to spark debate online, one thing is clear: accessibility cannot be just a policy on paper. For India's airports to be truly inclusive, dignity must come standard, not as a Watch
