Zepto says ‘taking corrective measures' after Maharashtra FDA suspends license in Dharavi over hygiene

Zepto on Monday said it is taking all necessary corrective measures to resume operations after Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food business license of Kiranakart Technologies Pvt. Ltd.—the parent company of the quick-commerce platform —for its Dharavi facility.
The Maharashtra FDA suspended the food business license citing serious violations of food safety and hygiene norms.
The action was taken after a surprise inspection on May 31 by food safety officer Ram Bodke, conducted under the direction of Minister of State for FDA Yogesh Kadam and supervision of Joint Commissioner (Food) Mangesh Mane. The inspection revealed multiple breaches of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Zepto released a statement on the matter and said, 'We are committed to rectifying the lapses identified and strengthening our processes to provide the best and safest quality of products to our consumers'.
"We are taking all necessary corrective measures to resume operations in accordance with regulatory obligations and applicable laws as soon as possible. We have already initiated an internal review and are working closely with the concerned authorities to ensure full and swift compliance," Zepto added.
According to the FDA's report, inspectors found several food items with visible fungal growth, while others were stored in proximity to stagnant, clogged water—raising the risk of pest infestation, as reported by Hindustan Times earlier.
Cold storage units were not maintaining the prescribed temperatures, and the facility's floors were wet, dirty, and littered with food products stored directly on the ground.
Food items that had crossed their expiry dates were also found mixed with fresh inventory, violating basic protocols of segregation and shelf-life management.
'These findings point to gross non-compliance with the conditions of the food business license and present a clear risk to public health,' the FDA had said in a statement.

According to Sarvesh Mishra, Gautam Budh Nagar's second assistant commissioner of food, revealed that his team ensures that food products meet the quality and food standards. In a statement, he said, 'Our team regularly conducts inspections and sampling to ensure that food products sold in the district meet safety and quality standards. In these cases, after detailed investigation and laboratory analysis, legal proceedings were initiated as per the Food Safety and Standards Act. The court, after hearing the matters, has imposed penalties accordingly,' as quoted by Hindustan Times. In April, four food businesses were fined a total of Rs 90,000 under the Food Safety and Standards Act. In the following month, some individual vendors and firms faced a penalty amounting to Rs 63.7 lakhs combined. A packaged food organisation, located in Noida Sector 58, faced the harshest blow. They were imposed a fine of Rs 14 lakhs for misbranding butter‑cream rolls. Mangalesh Dubey, the Additional District Magistrate and the adjudicating officer tasked under the Food Safety Act, issued the penalty.

Chandigarh: Paneer found spurious, trader to face action, says health department

A week after the food safety administration of the health department seized 450-kg paneer from a shop in house number 714/2 of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, lab reports have confirmed that the samples were unsafe and substandard. Following the test results, the department disposed of the seized paneer at the Municipal Corporation's waste disposal plant. The paneer was seized during a surprise raid at 7 am on June 11 which was stored in the shop as well as a vehicle parked outside the premises. The department has stated that appropriate action will be taken against the shop owner under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The department warned that anyone found selling or using substandard or unsafe paneer would face strict action. Crime Branch Busts Illegal Tobacco Racket; Goods Worth ₹12.22 Lakh Seized

Nagpur: In a pre-dawn operation, the crime branch's Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad cracked down on a major illegal tobacco transport racket within the limits of Nandanvan police station. Authorities recovered flavoured tobacco and gutkha products from various brands collectively valued at Rs2.22 lakh. Including the seized vehicles, the total value of goods seized stands at Rs12.22 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted two four-wheelers parked in front of a hotel at Wardhaman Nagar, around 5.30am on Saturday. During inspection, the team found large quantities of banned tobacco products and gutkha stashed in both cars. The accused, identified as Mahesh Umredkar (32), a resident of Gangabai Ghat Road, was caught red-handed. His accomplice, identified as Sonu from Nagpur, managed to escape and is currently wanted by the police. A case was registered under BNS sections 223, 274, 275, 123, and relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The seized goods and the accused were handed over to Nandanvan police station for further legal proceedings. The operation was conducted under the guidance of DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijit Patil, with effective execution by PSI Anil Ingol and his team.
