LONDON – Rory McIlroy became the first player to qualify for Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup, the team announced on June 16, with the Masters champion set to make his eighth consecutive appearance in the biennial event.
The Northern Irishman sealed his spot through the European Points List, a qualification pathway based on performances in DP World Tour and co-sanctioned events, as he has enjoyed four victories so far since last August.
"It's always a huge honour to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup, so it means a great deal to have qualified for my eighth in a row and to be part of Luke's team again at Bethpage," McIlroy said.
"Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is one of the biggest challenges there is in golf. We know it is going to be tough in New York, but we are all looking forward to that challenge in September and the opportunity to potentially do something special."
The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York from Sept 26–28, with European captain Luke Donald set to round out his 12-man squad later this year through six automatic qualifiers and six captain's picks.
The 35-year-old McIlroy completed a long-sought career Grand Slam at Augusta National in April, on top of victories at the Dubai DP World Tour Championship in November, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and The Players Championship.
A top-20 finish at the US Open over the weekend was enough to mathematically guarantee his place on the team.
The veteran has been a Ryder Cup mainstay since his debut in 2010, helping Europe to five victories in seven appearances.
Meanwhile, US Open winner J.J. Spaun jumped to No. 8 in the Official World Golf Rankings released on June 16, a meteoric rise from 109th to begin the season.
Spaun began last week ranked 28th in the OWGR before he scored a two-stroke victory over Robert MacIntyre of Scotland with consecutive birdies in his final round at Oakmont Country Club on June 15 to win the US Open.
Spaun, 34, has five career victories and held the 54-hole lead at the Sony Open and Players Championship earlier this year. He found the water on the island hole, No. 17, at TPC Sawgrass and lost a three-hole playoff to McIlroy at The Players.
The US Open was his first win since the 2022 Valero Open and put him ahead of the six players ahead of him in the OWGR in earnings this season (US$9.644 million). Only No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (US$15.174 million) and No. 2 McIlroy (US$14.221 million) have taken home more this season.
Americans Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Russell Henley occupy the No. 3-6 spots and Sepp Straka is seventh. REUTERS

Pope proves his worth as England number three

LEEDS, England - Number three the only position really up for debate as England headed into a crucial run of tests under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, but Ollie Pope's century against India justified the faith shown in him. After England had dragged themselves back into the first test against India at Headingley, the hosts needed to maintain the momentum in their reply to India's first-innings 471. The world's highest-ranked test bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, removed Zak Crawley in the first over to bring Pope to the crease. Selected at number three ahead of the burgeoning talent of Jacob Bethell, who averaged 52 on his first test tour of New Zealand, Pope settled after early scares to compile his ninth test century. The unbeaten hundred helped England close day two on 209-3, having looked on course, with India 430-3 before lunch, to get the series off to a losing start. "I just think he was so calm," said England opener Ben Duckett, who added 122 with Pope for the second wicket. "He couldn't walk out in tougher conditions. "I had goosebumps when he got his 100. He is such a big part of the dressing room. I take my hat off to him. I can't wait to give him a hug. "It seems pretty clear to me, coming into this test match, if someone scores 170 in the match before, they are going to play. The way Popey has dealt with it all shows why he is England's number three." The doubts surrounding Pope revolve around inconsistency. He averages less than 16 against Australia, and below 25 when facing India prior to his Headingley exploits. After following his 171 against Zimbabwe with another century when his country needed him most, England's selectors will be feeling comfortable in their decision to select Pope ahead of the precocious Bethell. Injured Ruud pulls out of Wimbledon

FILE PHOTO: Tennis - Italian Open - Foro Italico, Rome, Italy - May 15, 2025 Norway's Casper Ruud waves at fans after losing his quarter final match against Italy's Jannik Sinner REUTERS/Aleksandra Szmigiel/File Photo Norway's Casper Ruud has pulled out of Wimbledon as he is still struggling to recover from a knee injury, his management told local media on Saturday. The world No. 16 and two-time French Open finalist suffered a shock second-round exit at the claycourt major last month, losing to unseeded Nuno Borges of Portugal. Afterwards he said he had been struggling with a knee injury for some time and he has not been in action on the men's tour since, withdrawing from the grasscourt event in Mallorca. "He's back on the court, and things are going well, but it looks like playing best-of-five sets is unfortunately a bit too soon. Gstaad will be next for Casper now," manager Tina Falster told NTB. Ruud's best showing at Wimbledon is three second-round appearances. Wimbledon starts on June 30, while the Swiss Open in Gstaad begins on July 14. Dortmund feel the heat but still win

Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Group F - Mamelodi Sundowns v Borussia Dortmund - TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S. - June 21, 2025 General view of Borussia Dortmund substitutes holding umbrellas to get shade from the sunshine as coach Niko Kovac looks on REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach CINCINNATI, Ohio - Playing in midday heat proved a taxing ordeal for Germany's Borussia Dortmund, who had to hold on tenaciously to secure a 4-3 victory over South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup on Saturday. Temperatures over 30 degree Celsius in the United States have sapped the players' energy and there was a sense of relief for the Bundesliga side as they came through a tough physical test. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT European sides have had a difficult few days at the Club World Cup with defeats for Champions League winners Paris St Germain and Chelsea, so it was important for Borussia Dortmund to get their first win in Group F. KEY QUOTES Dortmund coach Niko Kovac: "We had a hard battle against the heat and an opponent who could handle the conditions better. This is a tournament that we want to compete in and try to win a World Cup title but the conditions are very hard for all for the teams." Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso: "I think it was clear that we pushed the level of the game to the maximum and that we were able to pay an open game against such a strong opponent. I'm very proud of the resilience that we showed." REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
