The Beach Boys Almost Hit No. 1 Following Brian Wilson's Death
The Beach Boys are remembered as one of the most successful pop groups of all time, but in some circles, the music the group created has long been classified as rock. That was certainly the case when the outfit first emerged — and it still is today in some respects.
The band's music has always straddled the line between pop and rock, and that genre-blurring blend is evident on the Billboard rankings this week. As fans across the United States pay tribute to songwriter and producer Brian Wilson following his passing, The Beach Boys land on one rock tally with multiple cuts.
The group nearly secures its debut No. 1 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart this frame, as "God Only Knows" launches at No. 2 on Billboard's list of the bestselling tracks in the U.S. that fall under the rock genre. The band is only kept from the summit by Oliver Anthony Music's "Scornful Woman," which starts its time on the tally in first place.
The Beach Boys collect two top 10 hits on the Rock Digital Song Sales ranking this frame, appearing inside the highest tier for the first time. "God Only Knows" debuts at No. 2, while "Good Vibrations" kicks off in fifth place.
Two other cuts by The Beach Boys also reach the Rock Digital Song Sales list. At the moment, the legendary act fills more than a quarter of all available spots on the tally. Coming in behind "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" are "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Sloop John B," which start at Nos. 12 and 13, respectively.
The Rock Digital Song Sales chart didn't exist when The Beach Boys first broke out and earned many of the band's biggest wins that are still remembered to this day. This week, the celebrated musical act earns its first four placements on the tally.
One additional track by The Beach Boys debuts on a Billboard chart, though not the rock-specific list. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" only makes it to the Digital Song Sales tally, which is not limited by genre. That track opens at No. 18, coming in behind "God Only Knows," which appears at No. 7 on that roster.

In the years since 'Infinity' debuted, Carey has pushed a handful of tracks onto the Hot 100, but all of them benefited from another artist being included. Her list of recent hits includes 'I Don't' with YG and 'Oh Santa!' alongside Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. Those two tunes peaked at Nos. 89 and 76, respectively. Of course, Carey returns to the Hot 100 every holiday season with 'All I Want for Christmas Is You.' The track finds its way back to the tally sometimes in November, sometimes not until December, but for the past half-decade, it has risen all the way to No. 1 every year. The blockbuster has now accrued a total of 18 weeks ruling the list — a number that will surely climb again at the end of 2025. 'Type Dangerous' powers its way onto the Hot 100 thanks largely to a healthy sales sum. The single opens at No. 4 on the Digital Song Sales chart, with a little under 5,100 pure purchases, according to Luminate. That also sends it straight to No. 1 on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and R&B Digital Song Sales tallies. It similarly opens inside the top 10 on a handful of other genre-focused rankings.

Tha Carter IV also manages to break back onto one tally. While it doesn't reach the Top Rap Albums list, which features just 25 spots, it does crack the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums tally, returning at No. 41. Simultaneously, it bolts more than 20 spaces on the Billboard 200, ascending from No. 179 to No. 152. Tha Carter VI launches atop both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums rankings. Wayne earns his eleventh leader on the all-encompassing list of the biggest titles in both genres and secures his milestone tenth champion on the rap-only roster. The project is a top five winner on every Billboard tally on which it appears. It only misses the summit on a few other rankings by a narrow margin. Tha Carter VI debuts in the runner-up space on both the Billboard 200 and Top Streaming Albums charts, and comes in third on both the Top Album Sales and Vinyl Albums rankings. In its first seven days of availability, Tha Carter VI moved 108,000 equivalent units. Disturbed's cover of Simon & Garfunkel's 'The Sound of Silence' may have felt like a surprising choice when it was first released years ago, but it has since gone on to become a career-defining smash for the group. Multiple versions of the tune continue to chart to this day, and the hard rock outfit almost returns to the summit on a list few could have predicted it would ever reach — let alone lead. The rockers are currently held back from ruling the show once more by one of the biggest pop stars of all time. Years after Disturbed's version of 'The Sound of Silence' became a hit, the group released a remix by producer Cyril. That version has also become a smash in its own right, albeit one that reaches different Billboard lists than the hard rock original. The remixed track can still be found on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart, where this frame it steps up from No. 4 to No. 2. Disturbed only misses ruling again by one spot, as 'Abracadabra' by Lady Gaga refuses to budge. While Disturbed's 'The Sound of Silence' might be forced to settle for second place at the moment, it has already spent time running the show. The hard rock group has only ever landed one win on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart, and 'The Sound of Silence' has commanded the list for half a dozen frames out of the 71 stints it has spent somewhere on the tally. The Disturbed song currently lives inside the top 10 on two similarly-composed but different-sounding rosters. As it settles into second place on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart, the original cover dips slightly to No. 4 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales ranking. In just a few weeks, the tune will reach 500 frames as a bestseller on that roster.
