SP Setia Bhd kicked off the financial year on a strong footing, announcing resilient earnings for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q25), despite a backdrop of global market volatility. The group recorded a net profit of RM89 million, driven by operational efficiency and disciplined cost management.
Revenue for the quarter stood at RM771 million, underpinned by robust sales performance and effective execution across its diversified property portfolio. Notably, the group reduced its borrowings by RM156 million, maintaining a healthy net gearing ratio of 0.35 times, aligned with its ongoing debt-reduction strategy.
SP Setia secured RM718 million in sales for 1Q25, with local projects contributing RM489 million (68%) and international projects adding RM229 million (32%). Regionally, the Central region led domestic sales with RM284 million, followed by the Southern region at RM189 million.
'Our financial performance this quarter underscores the effectiveness of our strategies and adaptability to changing market dynamics.
'We continue to prioritise capital efficiency and expansion in high-growth segments, while navigating market fluctuations with prudence,' SP Setia President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Choong Kai Wai said.
Looking ahead, Choong said SP Setia plans to launch RM5.1 billion in property developments and RM300 million in industrial projects in FY25.
'Domestically, the group will continue accelerating catalytic township developments, eco-industrial parks and exploring land monetisation and strategic partnerships to unlock further value.
'Internationally, the group is gaining traction with the launch of ATLAS Melbourne, a high-impact development with an estimated gross development value (GDV) of A$886.7 million. In Vietnam, new residential phases within its successful EcoLakes development are scheduled for launch in FY25,' Choong added.
As of March 31, 2025, SP Setia's unbilled sales stood at RM3.8 billion, supported by 42 ongoing projects, a remaining land bank of 5,364 acres, and an effective remaining GDV of RM120.1 billion. Related

Palm gains higher on Chicago's soyoil, crude oil rally

JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures rose for the third straight session on Monday, tracking gains in Chicago soyoil after the US proposed increasing biofuels blending, and supported by the crude oil rally following tensions in the Middle East. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained RM156, or 3.98 per cent, to RM4,078 (US$961.79) a metric ton by the midday break. US President Donald Trump's administration on Friday proposed increasing the amount of biofuels that oil refiners must blend into the nation's fuel mix over the next two years, driven by a surge in biomass-based diesel mandates, pushing soyoil prices higher. "The broader edible oils market tracked gains in crude oil, as investors reacted to heightened risks of conflict between Israel and Iran. Supply disruption fears lead to heightened risk premiums," said Darren Lim, commodities strategist at Singapore-based brokerage Phillip Nova. The push in higher energy prices increases both palm oil production costs and potential demand for biofuels. In essence, the biofuel sector acts as an alternative energy source to crude oil-derived fuels, he added. Soyoil on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) gained 4.51 per cent. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract was up 2.57 per cent, while its palm oil contract rose 3.76 per cent. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices were volatile on Monday after surging seven per cent on Friday, as renewed strikes by Israel and Iran over the weekend increased concerns that the battle could widen across the region and significantly disrupt oil exports from the Middle East. Stronger crude oil futures make palm oil a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for June 1–15 rose 26.30 per cent to 662,580 metric tons from 524,596 metric tons shipped during May 1–15, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Sunday. Palm oil still targets the RM3,962 (US$933.33) to RM3,998 range, as it has almost broken resistance at RM3,927 per metric ton, according to Reuters' technical analyst Wang Tao.

Investors hesitant amid global economic concerns, says Tengku Zafrul

Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said it is becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: Foreign investors are taking a cautious approach towards new investments in Malaysia due to global economic uncertainties, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said today. He warned that attracting new investors would be challenging in the current climate, noting that while existing investors in Malaysia remained committed, newcomers were showing hesitation. Advertisement 'Those who have committed have not pulled out. But the ones that have not committed are now thinking (whether to invest or not),' he told reporters during the regional launch of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. 'When we have discussions with companies, we understand their concerns. Many (investors) are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to the dynamic geopolitical situation, especially between the US and China. 'New companies looking to invest want to assess the global situation first,' Tengku Zafrul added. When asked about Malaysia's RM89 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of the year – up 3.7% from the same period last year – Tengku Zafrul said it was 'pleasantly surprising' given typical first-quarter sluggishness. 'In terms of foreign investment, it is almost 70% of the investment. And at the same time, we see that the biggest sector is services, especially the digital economy,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is expected to travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over the US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He said the Malaysian government hopes to persuade Washington to reduce import duties for certain sectors to below 10%. 'We also want to ensure that our local companies exporting to the US – especially in sectors such as furniture and downstream palm oil – are taken into account,' Tengku Zafrul said, adding that these sectors 'are not really in competition' with American industries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
