6 cooler places to escape the heat in Barcelona and Catalonia

6 cooler places to escape the heat in Barcelona and Catalonia

Local Spain13 hours ago

The intense summer in Spain has already begun even though it's only June, and people are beginning to look at where to escape the sweltering temperatures - both inland and in the capital of Barcelona itself.
You can of course go to a local beach or swimming pool, but these alternative destinations offer another way to keep fresh when the mercury rises.
Vall de Boí
The Vall de Boí is located high up in the Pyrenees, close to the borders with Andorra and France. It's also home to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park (see photo above). Because of its high altitude, but set in a valley filled with lots of lakes and rivers, it manages to stay relatively cool during the height of summer. Summer temperatures range between 15C and 25C – very comfortable when compared with the city or the costas. Explore the area by seeking out its Romanesque churches, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Puigcerdà
Puigcerdà is the largest town in area of Cerdanya, sitting right along the border with France in the Pyrenees and on the eastern side of Andorra. It stands at 1,200 metres above sea level offering plenty of mountain breezes and a summer temperature ranging between 19C to 24C. The town is also centred around a large cooling lake. For somewhere more remote, there are several charming nearby villages such as Alp and Castellar de n'Hug.
Setcases
Setcases is a small mountain village in the Ripollès region, just below the well-known Estació Vallter 2000 ski resort. During the summer months it offers a refreshing climate, with an average temperature between 12C and 22C. This means it's comfortable enough for hiking or cycling through the mountainous landscapes. The village itself is picturesque, filled with quaint stone houses.
Places to keep cool in Barcelona
Not only are these places where you can escape the heat in the city, but where you can escape the crowds too. There's no point heading somewhere slightly cooler if it's only going to be packed with people. Finding a cooler spot is all about finding somewhere high up and green with plenty of shade.
Head up to the Collserola Natural Park
The Collserola stretches around the hills right above the city - a huge natural park that spans over 8,000 hectares. Carpeted by forest in parts and crisscrossed with hiking paths, it offers plenty of shade, as well as cool breezes that float over the top of the city. You don't have any of the heat of the buildings or the traffic up here. While it still may be too hot for proper hiking, there are spots you can enjoy for picnics and admiring the views.
Relax in the many gardens on Montjuïc
Montjuïc is the large hill that rises to the southwest of the city. It's here where Barcelona hosted the 1998 Olympic Games and today is covered in verdant gardens, as well as the vestiges of stadiums and arenas. With so many gardens up here, you're sure to find one that's not too busy. Each garden has it's own unique feel - but most importantly - they mostly stay cool thanks to the numerous trees, shrubs, fountains and ponds.
Hide in the shade of the Labyrinth Park
Another spot to the north of the city is the Parc del Laberint d'Horta. Not often visited by tourists because it's so out of the way, it's a haven in summer to try and beat the heat. Once the grounds of an estate belonging to the Marquis of Llupià and is based on both Italian, French and English designs. It's filled with sculpted hedges, flower gardens, fountains ponds - and of course the huge labyrinth itself. There's a lot of shade and numerous benches to relax on.

Novo Nordisk's subcutaneous and oral amycretin data published in The Lancet and presented at ADA 2025

Subcutaneous amycretin phase 1b/2a data on the safety, tolerability and weight loss potential in people with overweight or obesity was published in The Lancet and presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions.1,2 Oral amycretin phase 1 data on the safety, tolerability and weight loss potential in people with overweight or obesity was also published in The Lancet.3 Findings from the clinical trials indicate amycretin appeared tolerable with a safety profile consistent with other GLP-1 and amylin receptor agonists.1,2,3 Bagsværd, Denmark, 20 June 2025 – Novo Nordisk announces subcutaneous amycretin data being presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 85th Scientific Sessions in Chicago, US.1 Full results of two clinical trials evaluating the safety, tolerability and weight loss potential of subcutaneous and oral amycretin in people with overweight or obesity were published today in The Lancet medical journal.1,3 Amycretin is the first treatment that combines GLP-1 and amylin receptor agonism biology in a single molecule. The published and presented results from the once-weekly subcutaneous amycretin phase 1b/2a clinical trial showed that participants who received the treatment demonstrated significantly greater weight loss across the full range of doses investigated compared to placebo. Data being presented at ADA were collected from two parts of the trial; dose escalation (amycretin 60 mg), and dose escalation and maintenance (amycretin 20 mg, 5 mg and 1.25 mg).1,2 No plateauing in weight reduction was observed at the end of treatment (ranging from 20 to 36 weeks) with all tested doses, suggesting that a longer treatment duration may potentially contribute to additional weight loss.1,2 Estimated mean change in body weight from baseline with once-weekly subcutaneous (SC) amycretin: 1,2 * Dose Treatment % Weight change % Weight change duration (SC amycretin) (placebo) 60 mg 36 weeks -24.3% -1.1%20 mg** 36 weeks -22.0% 1.9%5 mg** 28 weeks -16.2% 2.3%1.25 mg** 20 weeks -9.7% 2.0% * If all people adhered to treatment i.e. if all people followed the planned dosing schedule for the full trial period without any treatment discontinuations.** Administered during a 12-week maintenance period. Once-weekly subcutaneous amycretin treatment escalated up to 60 mg appeared tolerable with a safety profile consistent with other GLP-1 and amylin receptor agonists.1,2 The number of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) increased in a dose-dependent manner, were mostly gastrointestinal, and were comparable to the rate and profile of TEAEs reported in early-phase studies of GLP-1 receptor, GLP-1 receptor/gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) receptor, and amylin receptor agonists.1,2 The majority of TEAEs were mild to moderate in severity and resolved by the end of the study period.1,2 Of the participants who discontinued the trial, the majority were due to non-TEAE reasons.1,2 'As pioneers in obesity innovation, we are exploring multiple biological pathways to develop potentially transformative medicines that support the individual needs and preferences of people with obesity on their weight loss journey towards overall improved health,' said Martin Holst Lange, executive vice president for Development at Novo Nordisk. 'Amycretin is the first investigational treatment that combines GLP-1 and amylin receptor agonism biology in one molecule, working on distinct pathways and offering complementary effects on appetite control. The findings published and presented today are encouraging. We are excited to advance the clinical development of subcutaneous and oral amycretin into phase 3 to assess its potential as a therapeutic option for weight management.' The published once-daily oral amycretin phase 1 clinical trial data showed that participants receiving amycretin achieved greater weight loss compared to placebo.3 After 12 weeks of treatment with amycretin up to 50 mg and up to 2 times 50 mg, participants achieved a mean change in body weight of -10.4% and -13.1% respectively, compared to -1.2% with placebo.3 There were no apparent signs of weight loss plateauing within the 12 weeks of treatment in either of these amycretin-treated groups.3 Once-daily oral amycretin appeared to have an acceptable safety profile and was tolerable in all tested doses, with TEAEs in line with what was expected from targeting GLP-1 and amylin receptors.3 All reported TEAEs occurred in a dose-proportional manner, were mild to moderate in severity, and mostly gastrointestinal. No new safety signals appeared during the study.3 Based on the findings from the oral and subcutaneous amycretin trials, Novo Nordisk recently announced it will advance amycretin into phase 3 trials to further investigate the treatment as a potential new therapeutic option for weight management.4 About amycretinAmycretin is a unimolecular long-acting GLP-1 and amylin receptor agonist under development by Novo Nordisk, to provide an efficacious and convenient treatment for adults with overweight or obesity and for adults with type 2 diabetes. Amycretin is developed for subcutaneous and oral administration. Oral amycretin Phase 1 trial - The trial evaluated the single-ascending dose and multiple ascending doses for oral amycretin, up to 2 times 50 mg, in 144 people with overweight or obesity, with a total treatment duration of up to 12 weeks. Subcutaneous amycretin Phase 1b/2a trial - The trial investigated the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and proof-of-concept of once-weekly subcutaneous amycretin in 125 people with overweight or obesity. The trial was a combined single ascending dose, multiple ascending dose and dose-response trial investigating three different maintenance doses with a total treatment duration of up to 36 weeks. Huge high street retailer launches 20% off closing down sale ahead of store shutting for good in weeks

No reason for the abrupt closure has been given to customers GAME OVER Huge high street retailer launches 20% off closing down sale ahead of store shutting for good in weeks A HUGE high street retailer has launched a 20 per cent off going out of business sale with just weeks left until the store shuts for good. The hugely popular town centre video game shop is due to close down in a matter of weeks it has announced. 4 The store now has signs in the window announcing its imminent closure Credit: Google Maps 4 Several GAME stores have closed across the UK recently Credit: Alamy GAME, in Festival Place, Basingstoke, suddenly announced it will be closing down next month. The retailer will be holding a 20 per cent off everything closing down sale before shutting up shop for good on August 10. GAME sells a variety of video games, consoles and pop culture merchandise. The retailer came under fire recently when it cancelled pre-orders of heavily anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Its Basingstoke location is now due to close for good with signs seen in the window announcing the closure. No reason has been given for the retailers abrupt departure from the shopping centre. Products including popular video games and Lego sets have had their stock prices reduced. Retailer GAME, which specialises in consoles, games and accessories was acquired by Frasers Group in 2019 as part of a £52 million deal. The retailer has closed a number of locations across the UK in recent months. Signs in the window of the Basingstoke store read: "This store will cease trading on 10th August. Why are so many shops going bust? "Please shop online at A number of GAME stores have closed with some being converted into concessions within Sports Direct and other Frasers Group stores. Locals have been left disappointed by the news of the Basingstoke location's closure. Following Frasers Group acquiring GAME in 2019 significant restructuring and downsizing of the video game retailer has commenced. While plans don't indicate that the stores will disappear from the British high street completely many locations are expected to close. 4 The retailer has launched a 20 per cent off all stock closing down sale Credit: Alamy 4 The store will be sorely missed by locals Credit: Google Maps Downfall of GAME Game was acquired by billionaire businessman Mike Ashley's Frasers Group in 2019 as part of a £52million deal. However, by January 2020, the retailer announced plans to close 40 of its more than 300 stores across the UK. Today, there are approximately 240 Game stores operating nationwide. This decline comes amid a significant drop in sales of physical video games, compared to Game's heyday in the early 2000s. The Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) revealed that in 2022, nearly 90 per cent of all video games sold in the UK were digital downloads.
