Kansas City Chiefs risk sabotaging Patrick Mahomes' Super Bowl hopes by delaying $23 million Trey Smith deal

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for another high-stakes
NFL
season, one name looms large in the team's offseason strategy:
Trey Smith
. The 25-year-old offensive guard is currently playing under a non-exclusive franchise tag worth $23.4 million.
While that figure ensures Smith's short-term presence, it leaves significant uncertainty for the long-term future of both the player and the franchise.
The franchise tag may not be enough to keep
Patrick Mahomes
protected for long
The Chiefs now face a crucial July 15 deadline to negotiate a long-term deal with Smith. If they fail, he'll play the upcoming season under the hefty one-year tag—without any guarantee of staying beyond it.
Last season's crushing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX exposed serious flaws in the Chiefs' offensive line.
Despite Patrick Mahomes' brilliance, he was constantly under siege, struggling to make plays as the Eagles' defense dismantled the protection unit.
NFL analyst Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report didn't mince words when he called attention to the issue. 'The Kansas City Chiefs have remained in the Super Bowl picture ever since Patrick Mahomes took over as their starting quarterback. However, offensive deficiencies loomed large during Kansas City's 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX," Knox wrote.
"The Chiefs' offensive line was particularly problematic, as the Eagles defense consistently harassed Mahomes and shut down almost everything Kansas City did offensively.
'
That performance served as a wake-up call. For the Chiefs, the message is clear: Mahomes may be the engine, but without solid protection, even the most elite quarterbacks can be neutralized.
A long-term deal for Trey Smith could define the Chiefs' next chapter
Trey Smith is not just any guard. Since entering the NFL, he's proven to be a foundational piece of Kansas City's offensive front.
Locking him into a multi-year deal would not only provide Mahomes with a trusted protector but also reinforce the team's commitment to offensive excellence.
Knox added, 'Reloading the line is this year's top offseason priority. The remaining work must start with an extension for guard Trey Smith, who is currently set to play on the franchise tag. The Chiefs have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal with the 25-year-old, which they have planned to do since giving him the tag.'

Fans and analysts agree—relying solely on the franchise tag could backfire. Losing Smith after the 2025 season would be a step backward for a team still chasing greatness. The Chiefs have just weeks to act. The clock is ticking, and so is Mahomes' trust in the line meant to protect him.

Fired for being Black? Ex-Chiefs staffer Ramzee Robinson sues team, calls out racial bias and cover-up

Ramzee Robinson, former NFL player and Kansas City Chiefs staffer, is suing the team for wrongful termination and racial discrimination (USA Today Sports) F ormer NFL player and longtime Kansas City Chiefs staffer Ramzee Robinson has filed a lawsuit against the franchise, alleging wrongful termination and racial discrimination. The 41-year-old, who served as the Chiefs' Director of Player Engagement for nearly a decade, claims his firing earlier this year was both unjust and racially motivated. Ramzee Robinson denies any wrongdoing and says there is no evidence of the alleged incident According to the federal lawsuit filed on June 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, Robinson was abruptly terminated in February after being accused by a superior of attacking a female co-worker. The accusation, Robinson says, was allegedly based on security footage that the team refused to show him. His attorney, Katrina Y. Robertson, stated to PEOPLE, 'My client dedicated years of professional service to the Chiefs organization and supported players through critical personal and professional challenges. This lawsuit seeks to hold the organization accountable for the systemic inequities and retaliation he faced for simply demanding fairness.' Robinson 'unequivocally denies having been in an altercation with anyone,' and asserts that the team provided no proof of the alleged incident. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Claims of racial disparities in pay and treatment within the Chiefs organization The lawsuit further alleges that Robinson's race was a 'motivating factor' in his termination and points to pay disparities within the organization. According to the filing, Robinson was paid $125,000 annually—well below the average salary of $171,932 for similar positions at other NFL teams. He also claims that the team consistently underpaid African-American business employees compared to their white colleagues, adding to a pattern of discrimination. A respected player mentor seeks accountability and compensation Robinson, who was the last pick in the 2007 NFL Draft and played for the Lions, Browns, and Eagles, transitioned into a mentoring role after earning a master's degree in professional counseling. His responsibilities with the Chiefs included guiding players through personal and professional challenges, from off-field troubles to family emergencies and relocations. Now, Robinson is seeking a jury trial and demanding compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and legal fees. The Chiefs, through spokesperson Brad Gee, declined to comment in detail but stated, 'The Chiefs do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.' Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills' quarterback, has openly discussed his battle with insomnia (Image via AP) For Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the toughest opponent he's ever faced didn't line up across from him on a Sunday—it crept in when the lights went out. In a candid and vulnerable moment, the 2024 NFL MVP admitted that his sleep had been a long-term issue he could no longer ignore. While his arm strength and playmaking made headlines, it turns out his mind was racing far beyond the field. Josh Allen opens up about insomnia battle and how conquering it could fuel a Super Bowl run Josh Allen revealed to PEOPLE that his insomnia had become a lingering obstacle: 'I still found myself, 11:30, midnight still up. And it's not that I'm not trying to sleep, I'm laying down, my mind is racing a million miles a minute.' Despite dialing in his diet and nutrition over the past few seasons, sleep was the missing piece in his performance puzzle. That changed during a long transatlantic flight. After years of trial and error with sleep aids, Allen tried Natrol's Sleep & Restore. The result? 'I slept 10 hours on [that] flight. It was nine-and-a-half, 10 hours straight. So I woke up and I couldn't believe there was only three hours left in the flight.'
