No gears, no brakes, Formula Fixed out to fast-forward U.S. cycling

Reuters12-05-2025

May 12 (Reuters) - In the fluorescent glow of a re-purposed indoor go-kart track, cyclists hurtle around hairpin corners, their fixed-gear bikes offering a stark binary choice: perfect execution or intimate acquaintance with the barriers.
Welcome to the world of Formula Fixed, a new adrenaline-fuelled cycling format organisers believe can finally give the two-wheeled sport the street-cred it lacks in the United States.
"There are no real professional leagues that have cohesive storytelling and that's a shame, it's frustrating. So we're setting out to fix that," James Grady, co-founder of the venture with wife Clare, told Reuters.
"94 percent of people in the States know how to ride a bike, but the sport's ability to convert that familiarity into fandom is fundamentally broken."
Formula Fixed, which launched its inaugural Pro Series later this year, is cycling stripped back to the raw.
No gears, no brakes, just leg-pumping action that fuses messenger culture, video game aesthetics and athletic prowess.
Unlike traditional formats, whether road racing or track, fans and TV audiences of Formula Fixed won't need to be cycling aficionados to follow what's going on.
"We're not here to tweak the old model," James says. "We're here to tear it down and rebuild it from scratch with culture, inclusivity, and energy at the core."
The Gradys have been putting on events for more than a decade, including the Mission Crit in San Francisco -- a popular Criterium race around the city streets.
Formula Fixed has evolved that format for retro-fitted arenas where fans can watch 100% of the action without having to move from their seat.
"Mission Crit was getting more and more riders and more and more spectators, but it was hard to monetise because there's no front door," Clare says. "Fans at city crit races see maybe 10% of the action. I wouldn't want to pay for that."
James says in the crowded sports landscape, spectators demand a more immersive experience, pointing to the popularity of golf's arena-based TGL and basketball's Unrivaled.
Attempts to revolutionise cycling have been made before. The National Cycling League (NCL) with city-based franchise teams and celebrity-investments was launched a few years ago but soon ran into trouble and collapsed.
The Gradys feel they have found the perfect recipe though and judging by a sold-out showcase event last year in California that was backed by brands such as Red Bull and Rapha and generated 5.6 million digital impressions, they may be right.
"Whether you're in-venue, watching on-screen, or on your phone, you're going to feel the speed, the energy, and the emotion of every corner and crash," Clare says.
The series will predominantly attract those from America's fixed-gear bike messenger scene rather than WorldTour pros, but the door is wide open for international competitors.
"The key is it will really resonate with American audiences," James says.
Formula Fixed will launch with two two-day qualifying events in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and San Francisco in September with the best male and female riders competing in a 2026 Pro Series.

Pitching boosting Braves with chance to win series at Marlins

June 22 - The visiting Atlanta Braves have an opportunity to post their fourth consecutive series win on Sunday afternoon against the Miami Marlins. After beginning June with seven straight losses, the Braves have won eight of 11 games, including a 7-0 victory over Miami on Saturday. Starter Grant Holmes and three Atlanta relievers combined to record the club's fifth shutout of the season -- and second of Miami in four meetings this year -- to lower the team's ERA to 3.65. Atlanta will need continued success from its staff after placing reigning National League Cy Young winner Chris Sale on the 15-day injured list. Sale, who fractured his ribs diving for a grounder in a victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday, owns the NL's third-best ERA at 2.52. "It's just a freak thing, an unfortunate thing," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "With bones like that, they've got to heal before you can start the process, but I have no idea how long it will be." Holmes, who threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings against Miami on Saturday, echoed his manager's thoughts. "It's a big blow, but we're going to come to the ballpark and try to put some W's on the board every day," Holmes said. "He's a very big part of this team. Having Chris Sale in the clubhouse speaks for itself. He's a great leader. A great teammate. A great friend." Bryce Elder (2-4, 4.45 ERA) will make his 12th start of the season after being skipped over last time in the rotation. Elder hasn't pitched since June 13, when he allowed four runs over 3 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Colorado Rockies. The Braves won 12-4. Elder has faced the Marlins more than any other team over his four-year career, compiling a 2-2 record with a 2.89 ERA in 46 2/3 innings over eight career starts against Miami. The Marlins dropped their third game in four outings on Saturday, while being shut out for the sixth time this year. In defeat, Miami saw its second-largest home crowd of the season with an attendance of 21,198. Manager Clayton McCollough hopes that spills into Sunday as the Marlins look for their first series win over Atlanta since September 2023. "It was great to have some buzz in the stadium," McCollough said. "It's unfortunate the final score looks the way it is, but I felt like it was a game where it was one swing of the bat from flipping some. But it was a great atmosphere in LoanDepot (park) and hope for more of those to come." Miami's starter on Sunday, Sandy Alcantara (3-8, 6.88), is still looking to find his NL Cy Young form after winning the award in 2022 before missing all of last year following Tommy John surgery. Alcantara is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA through three starts in June after posting a 9.28 ERA in April and an 8.64 ERA in May. The 29-year-old right-hander allowed two runs in five innings on Monday in a 5-2 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. He is 4-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 82 2/3 innings over 13 career starts against the Braves. --Field Level Media

Streaky Rangers look for series sweep in Pittsburgh

June 22 - The Pittsburgh Pirates hope to salvage a brief, three-game homestand Sunday when their series wraps up with the Texas Rangers. Having lost six of their last seven games, the National League Central cellar-dwelling Pirates will send Bailey Falter (5-3, 3.49 ERA) to the mound in hoping to right the ship. The 28-year-old left-hander has not taken a loss since April 27, but he has five no-decisions in his last nine starts. As has been the case for most of the season, offense has been an issue for the Pirates. They entered Saturday with an NL-worst .225 batting average and managed just five hits in Saturday's 3-2 loss -- though the Rangers managed just four. During the current skid, the Pirates have mustered six or fewer hits in five games - all losses. Manager Don Kelly's team has scored three or fewer runs in each of their last 10 defeats going back to June 3. Despite the lack of offense, the Pirates had their chances to score on Saturday. The leadoff runner reached in four of the first five innings, but only one ended up scoring. "We just have to find a way," Kelly said. "We got to find a way to come through with guys on base." Falter has one career start against the Rangers, that coming in April 2023 when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies. Falter threw 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in a 2-1 loss on the road. Josh Jung hit a solo homer off Felter in that one. The Rangers, winners of two straight, have been a team of streaks over the past nine games. That stretch started with a four-game winning streak before they were swept at home by Kansas City. Jack Leiter will face the Pirates for the first time in his career Sunday. The rookie right-hander, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, has lost two straight and struggled in both starts. He has allowed 10 earned runs over his last 9 2/3 innings while giving up 13 hits and six walks. Texas will be without one of its top bats for at least 10 days as the club placed Jake Burger on the 10-day injured list on Saturday. The first baseman, whose 10 home runs and 13 doubles both rank second on the team, strained his left oblique in Friday's win over the Pirates. Utility player Ezequiel Duran will likely play in Burger's place, manager Bruce Bochy said, according to "I'd like to give Zeke some runway here," Bochy said. "I think he's been swinging better, and he gives us a good option there at first base. It's been good to see him make some adjustments." Duran was 0-for-3 on Saturday but scored the first run in the win after drawing a walk. He scored from first after left fielder Adam Frazier let Kyle Higashioka's base hit go under his glove and roll to the wall. After Sunday, Pittsburgh leaves for Milwaukee for a three-game series against the Brewers that starts Monday. The Rangers will travel to Baltimore for a three-game series that also starts Monday. --Field Level Media

Jon Jones RETIRES from UFC aged 37 after legendary career as Tom Aspinall is named new heavyweight champion

JON JONES has vacated his UFC heavyweight title and retired from mixed martial arts. The 37-year-old had been on course for a mammoth title unification fight with Brit Tom Aspinall since last November. 3 3 3 Jones agreed to the historic showdown after the UFC met his demands to be paid "f**k you money" but started flirting with the possibility of retirement. And the former pound-for-pound king has opted to call time of his illustrious and chequered career without sharing the cage with Aspinal. UFC supremo Dana White announced Jones' retirement in the early hours of the morning, saying. He said: "Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones is officially retired and Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC." Jones confirmed his retirement in a lengthy statement on X: "Today, I'm officially announcing my retirement from the UFC. "This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I've experienced over the years. "From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in this sport. "Becoming the youngest UFC champion in history, defending my title against some of the best fighters in the world, and sharing unforgettable moments with fans across the globe—these are memories I'll cherish forever. "I've faced incredible highs and some tough lows, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and made me stronger, both as a fighter and as a person. "I want to thank the UFC, Dana, Hunter, Lorenzo, God, my family, coaches, teammates, and all the fans who have stood by me through every chapter. "Your unwavering support and belief in me have been my foundation. To my fellow fighters, thank you for bringing out the best in me and for the respect we've shared inside and outside the cage. "As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead. MMA will always be a part of who I am, and I'm excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways. "Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey with me. The best is yet to come." THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..
