The Indian Biogas Association IBA ) on Thursday proposed integrating government initiatives like Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT), GOBARDhan, and CBG (compressed biogas) blending into a unified national mission to boost the biogas sector. This suggestion was made in a white paper launched by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari , which also recommended centralised tracking, standardised benchmarking, and integrated funding to scale up biogas deployment in India.Key recommendations included mandating phased CBG blending across sectors, creating a green certificate ecosystem and accelerating decentralised biogas infrastructure development. Additional proposals included incentivising waste segregation and feedstock supply chains, improving rural energy access with clean cooking fuel, bridging the skill gap through workforce programs and empowering women through biogas micro-enterprises.Additionally, it called for promoting biogas as a primary cooking fuel in rural India by introducing targeted subsidies, encouraging the use of LPG-biogas hybrid stoves, and aligning efforts with the Ujjwala Yojana and City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks.'Approximately 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste lacks proper scientific treatment and goes underutilized annually, while over 80% of rural households still depend on biomass fuels. Meanwhile, India imports over 85% of its crude oil, exposing the economy to global price volatility and straining foreign reserves. Unifying all three missions under one, will bring in synergies and better management and utilization of existing resources," IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia said in the statement.Gadkari emphasised that Indian agriculture needs to become economically viable to make the country self-reliant (Atmanirbhar).The Union Minister highlighted examples of ethanol production from crops like corn, bamboo, and broken rice, which have increased farmers' incomes. For instance, corn prices rose from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,600 per quintal after its use in ethanol production began, demonstrating the potential for economic growth through viable agriculture.Gadkari noted that developing a strong biofuel market will help reduce India's demand for fossil fuels. "If we want to reduce pollution, then green fuel is very important for sustainable development," he said.India imports over 85% of its crude oil, making the economy vulnerable to global price fluctuations and putting pressure on foreign exchange reserves.Notably, India's fossil fuel import bill declined 16% to $132.4 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year compared to the previous year, even with a slight increase in crude oil imports. The fossil fuels still account for a significant portion of India's energy consumption. In fact, fossil fuel consumption in India rose 8% in 2023, making up 89% of the country's overall energy consumption.

Varanasi gears up for CZC meeting, final touches underway
1 2 Varanasi: With the Central Zonal Council (CZC) meeting scheduled for June 25, preparations have intensified in Varanasi. Beautification works are nearing completion, particularly along routes that will witness VIP movements beginning Monday evening. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and the CMs of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to attend the meeting. That evening, they will offer prayers at the Kaal Bhairav and Kashi Vishwanath temples before proceeding to the meeting venue at Hotel Taj in Nadesar on Tuesday morning. To ensure smooth movement and aesthetic appeal, authorities are focusing on key areas including the stretch from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport to Hotel Taj and the roads leading to both temples. Thematic display boards are being installed along the Varuna bridge, while road dividers are being freshly painted. Work on enhancing street lighting and greenery is also nearing completion, with multiple agencies working in coordination. On the security front, Commissioner Agrawal said a multi-layered deployment plan has been finalised. Security personnel will be stationed at the venue and across the VIP routes. Measures include rooftop surveillance, deployment of officers in plain clothes, drone monitoring, and route diversions. Traffic diversions will remain in effect from Monday evening until the dignitaries' departure on Tuesday. CM Yogi during his visit to the venue on June 16, had reviewed the arrangements and instructed officials to ensure the timely completion of all pending work. With issues from multiple departments expected to be discussed, senior officials from Union ministries and departments of the four participating states have already started arriving in the city.

Soon, GIS mapping of Sal river and Ponda nullah; digital portal for environmental monitoring in state
Panaji: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), at its recent meeting, approved GIS mapping of River Sal and the Ponda nullah to identify the source of pollution in these water bodies. The board noted that it received a number of complaints about pollution in the Sal and the nullah. Besides this, the board said that a writ petition was also filed in the high court, where it was also told to find the source of pollution in these water bodies. The board has accordingly decided to invite e-tenders to carry out the work. Meanwhile, the board approved the issuance of a work order to a selected service provider through e-tendering, chosen to set up a digital portal and dashboard for an online continuous environmental data monitoring system. This dashboard will collect real-time pollution monitoring data from all industrial units in Goa. The server will be operational within six months, the GSPCB told the service provider, who will be paid Rs 85 lakh for the work. 'This portal will enable highly scalable systems that can connect more than 2,000 or all available industries/units of Goa, engaged in online monitoring with all the sites simultaneously in real-time with a non-proprietary, highly scalable back-end database suitable for storing time series data,' the board said in the minutes of its meeting. The Union ministry of electronics and information technology, under the National Air Quality Monitoring Programme and the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme, requires states to carry out continuous noise monitoring, ambient air quality monitoring, effluent monitoring, and emission monitoring. All this data is to be deployed on the empanelled cloud server of the ministry and managed by a bidder under the ownership of the GSPCB. Accordingly, a work order will be issued to create a digital portal and dashboard for a continuous online monitoring system for Goa.

Shah's take on English is his personal view: EPS
Coimbatore: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday said Union home minister Amit Shah's remark that a time would come when English speakers would feel embarrassed was his personal view. "Everyone has their own opinion. What he said was his personal view. He had, at the same time, emphasised on the importance of the mother tongue. Shah pointed out that some people are giving more importance to English than to their native language." Speaking to the media at the city airport, EPS said the public anger against the DMK was growing and that an anti-people govt was governing Tamil Nadu. "To divert attention from this, they are spreading 'derogatory' cartoons. The people would deliver appropriate punishment in the 2026 assembly elections." When asked about International Yoga Day , he said, "Yoga is essential for physical health and the Prime Minister is promoting it, for which he deserves congratulations."
